It's not something you see very often, but Houston is getting snow...

It truly is amazing. I live in a small town called Brenham about 60 miles outside of Houston, its snowing here too. Its awesome to see! Even though its not like falling down hard, its cool to see snowflakes falling down! Something we rarely ever see...

All we received in Georgetown (30 miles north of Austin) was sleet.

Here in Round Rock (just a pinch north of Austin) we had what might have been construed as snow. Sounded like rain. May have been sleet. Helpful, aren't I?  Wink

Do they even have de-icing equipment and snow plows there?

I'm sure they do, but does anyone know how to run them, if they even start!

Wow.. Snow in Houston. That has got to be a sight... I remember flying into Chicago a few years back on Southwest, and there was a great couple (mid 20 year olds) from Mexico visiting there. We were flying in a 737-200, and I was lucky to sit with them facing them (I knew it was going to be my last chance to sit backwards...) and you should have seen their face as we were coming in to MDW when they actually got to see snow for the first time in their lives. I bet there are a lot of people in Houston today with those same smiles.

Oh yea.. gotta say it... Didn't Al Gore visit with Obama just yesterday talking about Global warming?  sarcastic

I can remember a few years ago hearing we had an a/c AOG at either AUS or HOU because of a lack of a de-icing truck or fluid. That was a fun day LOL!

That was the same storm that hit MSY....got quite a bit of snow at the airport, and our (F9) flight to DEN was significantly delayed...until the next day, IIRC...as CO, our contractor for deicing at the time, ran out of fluid. That was an interesting gate announcement I had to make.

Trade? I think they had to close the Palmer Snow Field on Mt Hood because of no snow. Usually, at least one resort is open by now! We are supposed to get a big storm here over the weekend, so hopefully there will be snow up there. It has been dry and 50F for the past few weeks here (PDX). Its like the tropics here!

Ahhhh...... it's just a little dusting. My concerns are the locals who don't know how to drive in this stuff. Hopefully, there will be little or no build up of ice on the overpasses or bridges tomorrow morning.

Ahhh, home of Blinn...  Smile I'm in Huntsville myself about an hour north of Houston on I-45 and it's still snowing here. It took me about 30 minutes to completely clear off my car and de ice it when i had to go and do some things around town. I was talking with my family in Germany and where we live (Kaiserslautern) it isn't snowing... Hard to think that this area of Texas would get snow before Germany would...  Smile

My sister in Denton (north of Dallas/Ft. Worth) told me of a storm that hit the entire metroplex a couple years ago that resulted in a very fine dusting of snow and frost that caused lots of school districts and universities to cancel classes for the day.

About 5 years ago, we had a huge snowstorm hit here between Dec 21-23rd. Dumped about 23 inches of show on us. Shut down most the ops for 2 whole days. Christmas Eve, a Friday, I was working an IAH flight, then going home after that. A F/A was dead-heading back, and she commented how she was so sick of the snow here. I said "really?" She said yes. And I told here then she wouldn't mind looking at the WX on the computer, which said they currently had snow showers in IAH. She almost screamed!

Enjoy it IAH. We've got 5 more months of it up here.

Having spent 10 years there, given the choice between driving with most Houstonians in snow/ice conditions and during Ike's landfall, overall I think I'd be safer with Ike...  Wink

Yes CO at IAH has deicing trucks. Harris county does not have any snow plows since the roads are usually way to warm for it to stick. What they do have is anti-freeze spreaders to coat the many bridges in the area which are a different matter entirely.

That was my first winter down here and I remember everyone going outside to watch it snow. Still not as much as last night.

Which just highlights the fact that you know absolutely nothing about climate change. What is happening in New Orleans is known as weather, or the short time-scale evolution of the atmoshpere. Climate is the statistics of weather on a much, much larger time scale.

Winter storms is the reason I switch my CO connecting flights from EWR to IAH this time of
year. IAH can see some nasty thunderstorms/hurricane weather in the summer months.
Oh well, this definitely breaks the monotony.

Another part of the country, but...... The west coast (of the US) is due for snow and that includes valleys and coastline that rarely ever sees snow (Eugene, OR; Oregon Coast, North Coast of California aka Eureka/Crescent City, Ukiah). They are calling for a chance snow on the beach here in Arcata, California today. Possibly an inch or two accumulation. Last year was the first time I have seen in snow in Arcata in the 8 years I have lived here. There may be some delays at ACV later today.

I flew up to FAI for Thanksgiving. Weather was not too bad.... 0F give or take 10 degrees with 9 inches of snow on the ground. The snow was squeaky dry when you walked on it. The northern lights came out the night I got there. That was a nice 'welcome home' from the heavens. I lived up there from 1988-95.

DXing, thanks for posting the pictures of the snow in Houston, they were great.

Tell them to drive up to the Dog's Humpback (local joke, Hunsrueck hills = Hundsbuckel hills) about 50 km north of KL. Here all the fields are covered with this stuff and I had to clear the pavement in front of my house several times during the last weeks, though it usually thaws away during daytime again.
