Are You Paid Well For Your Current Job?

Sun Dec 14, 2008 11:01 pm

I guess we could chalk this up with the self-gloss crap, but I just got my review and annual raise and I hit six figures. I'm only 28 years old so I feel (relatively) accomplished. I know my father was only 24 when he made his first $100,000 annually, but I feel pretty good right now.

Do you feel underpaid? I'm not asking for anyone to share approximate figures on annual salary, but I'm asking for thoughts regarding it, given the current state of the global economy.

Not even close. I'll be 35 before I make a decent paycheck. And with the way medicine has been going, I'm skeptical of even that.

My pay is abysmal. That's all I can say really.

I should know in January some time if I have a shot at hitting six figures before I turn 40 (I'm 29 now).
I lift things up and put them down.

I was basing this mostly off my best friend's wife, who is a teacher at a private school. Thus my thread on teacher's pay last week and lack there of. Funny a lot of weird jobs garner good money and the required, decent ones pay minimal.

My current wage is currently £0. I finished my seasonal work a week gone Friday, and Im waiting to claim Jobseekers Allowance at £60.50 per week. Next month, when I'm due to go to back to work, I will be on an ok wage of £675 per month, but do not have any bills or housing to pay for as work provide it free for me.

Yes. I also have a job that I can make as much as I want or as little as I want. Personally, I want to make a lot. Have hit the six figures twice (that comes at a price, though).

Maiing 6 figures would basically entail me being at sea 365 days a year at current salary levels, NOT going to happen when I'd like to remain sane! (and keep my girlfriend happy...)

Meh.. I'm a ramprat and I get paid a ramprats wage ($12.509/hr in this case)..

Am I underpaid? I don't really think so..

Could I stand to be paid more? Absolutely, but that's something I have to achieve by finishing up my education and moving upward in the industry.

My seniority is better in EWR and better to get on EWR flights. IAH, even with as many flights as they have, I rate better to EWR. I have commuted farther. 22 years is still junior in some circles. I never complain, once the door is shut, I am not going anywhere. Middle seat included.

As an investor, their are good years and bad ones. Three years ago was my worst year generating under 50K, but good savings kept me afloat, especially living in one of the most expensive areas in the country. This year has been one of my better years where I should end up between 140-160K, but the majority will be going into savings to help me get through the next few years.

In my line of work, I will probably never see a six figure salary... I think it is funny how thousands of people put their lives in my hands every day, but my coworkers and I are making just enough to have a basic life... Thank god my wife makes a good wage!

As a E-6 in the Navy with 16 yrs I am clearing over 56K before taxes and including entitlements Rent allowance, food and substance monies) in Fallon, NV. When I move to San Diego this week I will be clearing over 72K with the adjusted cost of living. However the nice condo we are moving in to is nearly 1900 a month no doubt its a little pricey where were moving to.

Having said that I can't complain considering I have free medical, dental. small cost for life insurance and will be guaranteed a pension and medical, dental for the rest of my life once I complete 20 years in 2012. Of course I will take a pay cut once I retire but another career will cover or surpass that income.

HELL NO! I do not make a decent wage at all... In spite of having 2 BA degrees, the only job I can seem to get is my lousy slave-wage hotel housekeeper job... It sucks, and I would like nothing more than to get the hell out of there!!!

I apply for jobs within my field, only to have been told, "no," or "job filled," more times than I have heard the word, "the..."

I am going for a Masters in Regional Planning tho...

I am not even asking for much... 20 or 25k a year and I'd be fine. I guess it's too much to ask... This economy sucks...

I make $58/month during short months and $72.50/month during long months. I don't know if that is good pay for someone my age, but I don't even make $1,000 after a full year. I'm hoping to get a job that gives me more pay when I'm 16 or 17.

I make $7.50/hour working retail. Considering I bring little more to the job than a pulse (at least from an employer's perspective), I'm comfortable with that wage at this point in my life. Working around 22 hours a week I'll bring home about $8000 this year. Obviously, if I this were a career I'd be concerned at that pay. I was just accepted into engineering school and when I get out, I expect to earn commensurate to my skills and education. In the meantime, I have my first review coming up in the beginning of February. Maybe I'll be bumped to $7.75...

Damn and here I work in the main base for FedEx and I only earn 85k. I wish I could go to AUS where you are and make that..I hate MEM that is for sure. Sorry to say my family is a bunch of losers(not to me) my dad I don't think ever made more than 45k. But it was a good living during my childhood even in NJ. My parents gave me everything they could..I am very fortunate. I make more than I ever did as a senior mechanic at NWA. But maybe someday I can make as much as you do as I am 45 I hope I live long enough to see it.

I get paid quite well for what I do. It could be better, but I'm not complaining. It pays the bills with enough extra to live comfortably. More importantly, I have a very good benefits package, great hours plus its a very stable industry that isn't threatened by the economy nearly as much as most other jobs out there. Not to mention, I've really learned to love my job.

I am 24 and this is my first year in a 'permanent' job, which took me over a year to get. I earn more than the country's average for my age (greek minimum wage) but it is still too low, I cannot afford rent to have my own place, I still have to live with my parents. My yearly net income does not go above €13,000. I am starting to believe that all my education costs will pay off at least in a decade from now, maybe it wasn't worth it to begin with... Gotta love this country!

Around $30.000 a year. Is that enough? Depends, at my previous position, with constant threat of riots, getting stones thrown at and a general rather hostile attitude towards me and my colleagues, I'd say no. In my current position... I don't think I can complain too much  Smile

Average for me right now is $40,000, which is semi-comfortable living in my area, but with available overtime, I can make upwards of $70,000. And this is below mailine wages for the given seniority.

I love flying in and being around planes - but that is one of the reasons I wouldn't get into the industry. With all the responsibility and high standards, but the supposedly rubbish pay - I'm not interested.

I work 35 hours per week, get a good package of loadings and flexible working hours with it too, so I've got no interest in changing things. I'm quite happy where I am. Getting the biggest dollars isn't so much a worry (though the pay is quite fine) - but I prefer security and flexibility, which is what I've got.

I am paid well to do something I find very interesting, although like any other job it does piss me off from time to time. Last year I cracked $100K (from salary and bonuses) and I was 25 at the time. This year I got a 16K raise and bigger bonuses but my investments took a BEATING!

I'm a supervisor in a major Ambulance Service here in the UK, and I make just shy of £20,000 per annum, or around $25,000. For the responsibility I have, I think its a pretty low wage. Never gonna see a six figure salary in this line of work, anyways!

I do OK - I'm on £33,000 p/a with a 15% net bonus - but I'm a senior business analyst and operations manager for a business intelligence company, so while i am well paid compared to many public sector jobs, I am very underpaid for what I do. I clear about £2,000 net a month after overtime and bonuses etc, and my rent, bills, loan repayments etc come to £850 max, so I have lots more disposable income than many my age, even those with much better paying jobs.

What annual rise? I didn't get a rise since three years. Three years ago the salary was not the best, but it was still ok (especially concerning the 5 on 5 off shiftroster, but our boss wants to change it to 6 on 3 off), but in meantime everything became more expensive.
Seeing the young contractors (freelancers) we have at work, who in their late twenties own several houses, I'm contemplating the jump from a reasonably secure, but badly paid permanent job to the uncertainities of wellpaid contracting jobs.

Wow a 20+ seniority pay rate, even ILS would be green with envy

I clear about US$170K after deductions, plus bonus, which is usually about 25% but this year is expected to be 0%, due to the economic situation. Couple of other benefits thrown in as well.

My field varies greatly. I am probably closer to the upper level of expectations though, so am quite happy with what I earn. Of course we spend a fair amount of time working our way up in this industry earning bugger-all and doing awful jobs, so it's nice to be making decent money now.

I think I get paid fairly for what I do and I enjoy the other perks like living anywhere I want without having to change jobs and having 11 consecutive days off every month.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

For the record, I commute out of AUS and hub/office from MEM.

Well unless you are a pilot, mechanic or GOC specialist you are not jumpseating on FDX so I assume FDX is paying for you to commute on a commercial airline. As you have indicated that you are an engineer in the past. I don't know why they would do that but hey if they do great for you. I could commute I guess if I wanted to but for only 2 days off it is not worth it. I will stay here and suffer..

All I can say is it's all relative to your expenses. I think everybody feels that they are underpaid, that's just human nature. I haven't seen a person that would say that he/she is compensated fairly, everybody wants more than they are worth/deserve.

Bingo.

I kind of lucked into a job I got while I was CFIing and I love it. Boss has become like a second father to me, I have a "desk" and fly just enough to keep myself happy, plus I'm making a great salary--several times larger, sadly, than I would have been making as a regional FO.

Now he can afford a car with interior by KIA. Sweet.
I got my head checked--by a jumbo jet
