Good Restaurant Near Time Square, New York

Sun Dec 21, 2008 9:28 am

Hi everyone,

My gf is coming to NYC Dec30-Jan3 from Hong Kong, and I'll be down there to meet her up (I'm from BC Canada). Since it has been 7 years since last time i was in NYC, can anyone give me some suggestion on where should I take her to supper on the 31st near Time Square. Price is not a factor.

thanks!

You do realize that Dec 31st is new years eve and all of times square is going to be a zoo, correct? Most nice places there need a reservation and the chances of getting one now, are probly slim.
Doors open, right hand side, next stop is Springfield.

Hm....well I can't think of anything that's good on Times Square, it's all really touristy right there. As I am not a native New Yorker, my mom is, and I'm actually in New York for the week. We just had dinner a few blocks away from Times Square at Rue 57. Here's a link to a map:

Great food, good drink, classy decor, and sophisticated musical selection. My family and I spent about an hour and a half in there this evening. We had dinner around 10:45 after seeing the Rockettes in Radio City Hall. We also ate at an amazing Italian restaurant last night. I don't remembere where/what it was, but I can ask my mom if you want to know. Let me know.

There is a really good Thai restaurant called Pongsri on 48th St just east of 8th Ave. Whatever you do stay away from Broadway Joe's (if it's still in business). I ate there once and the food was awful.

I've got the 21 Club recommended. It's on 21 W 52nd St.

I have a table there for New Years Eve / 31. dec., and it's a pretty short walk to Time Square.
We have clearance, Clarence. Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?

What's your budget and do you have a particular type of food you want to eat? That's the great thing about restaurants in New York...there's something for everyone.

Times Square is tourist central for New York City, it caters to tourists so you will find a lot of restaurants you would find in other tourist spots like Orlando, Las Vegas etc.. Sometimes that can be fun, every now and then I like to go to the Hard Rock cafe because I love music memorabilia. However I enjoyed the HRC better before it moved to Times Square, it was in a less touristy area before.

Not too far from Times Square and a bit less touristy you will find some great restaurants in the Theater district, although those kind of cater to an Older crowd. Personally I prefer to Eat downtown , Tribeca, SoHo, Ganesvort, Bleeker street etc..

I agree there are many good restaurants outside of the Times Square area...but since the thread opener wanted a restaurant in that vicinity, here's my suggestion:

Really good Cuban cuisine:

Victor's Cafe: 236 W. 52nd St., New York, NY 10019
http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/victors-cafe/

Entrees run about $20-$30 so including drinks, tips, and tax...this restaurant should be within your budget.

By the way, I noticed your flag says you're from Hong Kong...I am Chinese and from Hong Kong myself. I understand how some Chinese people in Hong Kong are afraid to try different types of cuisine (i.e. any type of food from outside East Asia). If you or your gf are hesitant about trying Cuban, I say not to worry. Because Cuban food is good and this restaurant is pretty high quality...so you aren't going to be getting Cuban street food.
