Top Guitarists Of All Time?

Tue Dec 23, 2008 2:28 am

This is from 2003, but what do you think about this list???

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/sto...atest_guitarists_of_all_time/print

Hendrix is absolutely awesome, but is he really #1?

How does Eddie van Halen come in at #70???

Good to see Jimmy Page & Keith Richards up there, along with George Harrison. Chuck Berry is also a legend and deserves to be up there for his influence on early rock music.

Make your list of top 10 greatest guitarists of all time.

Kurt Cobain is on this list? SERIOUSLY? And at number 12?

Yeah, the four power chords he knew really brought a lot to the table...  sarcastic

Eddie Van Halen is 70, but Hendrix is number one? Spare me. And where the hell is Alex Lifeson from Rush? He's definitely in the top 25.

Eddie's not the best - not by a long shot - but he and Alex Lifeson are a lot closer to #1 than Hendrix should be, IMHO.

As someone who has played guitar for over 20 years, this article is a joke.

Brittany Spears was a better guitar player than Kurt Cocaine....err...Cobain and she didn't even play the guitar!

My picks;
Alex Lifeson (RUSH)
Phil Keaggy
Kerry Livgren (Kansas)
Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers)
Howard Lease (Heart)
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (The Doobie Brothers)

That's odd considering Kirk Hammett comes in at #11 and they cite the solo in "One," one that he used a technique that Van Halen himself popularized 10 years before.

This list is totally bogus. Cobain? Please. Great songwriter, no doubt, but great guitarist, 12th at that, hell no.

I agree. There are choices I really don't understand.

Is this taking into account only the "talent" or as well the influence they had on music?

For example, Derek Trucks deserves better than 81 position... This guy has real talent, much better than people like Cobain or Morello.

I whish Mark Knopfler was higher in the table as well.

Any "top 100" without Leo Kottke is just evidence that the compiler of the list, regardless of "credentials" doesn't know very much about music.

And if Chuck Berry gets credit for contributions then Les Paul needs to be moved up.

Eddie Van Halen was a pioneer with his tapping style. If you listen to rock music, there are pre Van Halen lead solos and post Van Halen solos. That's why he should be higher up on the list.

this article is a joke.

This list, pretty much like almost everything else Rolling Stone does, is bullshit.

First, define “greatness.” Is this by genre? Just rock and roll and blues? What?

Because some of the guys on this list aren’t terribly great but are INFLUENTIAL. In theory, Chuck Berry is always and eternally in the top 3 of all time as a guitar god, but because he’s the freaking father of rock and roll. I love him, but as far as ability, there are thousands of pre-pubescent boys in their bedrooms that play better.

But buddy Guy at 30 is criminal…way too low. I’d also put John Fogerty higher, Derek Trucks too. Peter Green is tremendous—back when Fleetwood Mac was a REAL band, haha…(Shrine 69 is outstanding, I highly recommend it-live recording).

And it’s Freddie King, not Freddy. OMG! Rolling Stone is trash—they misspelled one of the great bluesman’s names!! WTF!

There are a number of major oversights here.

Jeff Healey!

Sonny Landreth!

Eric Johnson!

I didn’t see Satriani either, was he on there?

Don’t forgot Rory Gallagher.

Brian Setzer is freaking awesome.

Dave Alvin, David Hidalgo, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, tons of others…Rolling Stone bites one man.

My failing in not suggesting Andres Segovia.

Anyway, lists like these are usually stupid - no one will agree on them, and it's just ridiculous to try and rank all these equally talented people.

But I suppose it'll sell more magazines, so whatever.

Usually these lists are topped by guitar heroes whose greatest talent is being able to play single note solos really fast. Usually the songs these guys play are little more than an excuse for a lead solo.

What I liked about guys like Hendrix is that they were much more than single note lead solo players. Hendrix was very innovative harmonically for a rock guitarist. He was always using interesting chords and different rythim guitar techniques. Little Wing is a masterpiece and even sounds great on an acoustic guitar. His solo in The Wind Crys Mary is a fine example of how you don't need a lot of pyrotechnics and speed to sound great.

I always liked Keith Richard because he was always able to mesh with the other guitar players in the group. Listening to Keith and Mick Taylor, and later Ronnie Wood is a good textbook course on how 2 guitars can compliment each other. Keith is always more interested in contributing to making the song sound good than being a lead guitar hero.

checkmark He speaks of it as the 'art of weaving'. I think he also gets browny points just for the fact hes still alive, never mind playing. Mick Taylor also deserves a mention, quite a talent.

Hendrix certainly deserves to be in the top 10, but IMO he gets far more 'legend status' because of his young death.

Anyway, glad you agree with me the list is a POS!! Check out the drummers and vocalists too.

Interesting that Brian May is so far up the list. Not a huge Queen fan and of course they are all in the shadow of Freddie, but a very talented man - and quite a gentleman compared to say Keefer and Eddie VH, not your typical rocker. What are your opinions on him?

Call me a cynic, but I'm convinced that if Cobain hadn't offed himself so soon, he'd have eventually been revealed as a talentless musical fraud instead of the "tragic musical genius" that a self-inflicted shotgun blast made him overnight.

Fact of the matter is there were other former garage bands that were every bit as influential on the development of the "grunge" sound as Nirvana, if not more so.

MTV just anointed them first, that's all.

26 replies and Willie Nelson still isn't mentioned.

I've just seen Chuck Berry on stage a few weeks ago and his children should tell him to retire. But he surely is one of the greatest of all time, and, at age 75, Willie ain't that good anymore.

I've gotta add Stephen Edgerton (Descendents & ALL).

The hidden guitar players that we never hear of are the studio musicians. More talent amongst studio musicians than we'll know and they get very little attention.

I've included Stephen, buy the way, because he's my son-in-law and my daughter might come across this thread.  Smile

I assume you meant so far DOWN the list. Anyway, being a huge Queen fan myself I personally would have liked to see him at the top of the list, but that just again proves the point that who you want to see on that list and in what position will always be a matter of personal opinion.

Listening to the guitar solo he did during their live performance of Brighton Rock on the album Live Killers gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Seen a video of him performing it on stage as well at Montreal, although watered down a bit from the album version. However, not knowing anything about music except how to listen to it I'm sure some more musically literate members on here will be quick to tell me that it was no big deal and that he just recycled one note over and over or something like that and that guitarist X could have done a better job with one hand tied behind his back etc.  biggrin

Yes, he seems to be a very British type gentleman, never having met the man myself in real life, but having read everything I could lay my hands on about Queen all of the members seem like very nice guys, although I recall reading somewhere that Freddie was apparently at a few occasions a bit hostile towards journalists and could be temperamental and a bit of a drama queen at times.

Agreed - I've been playing for 30 years so I guess that I am ten years-worth more insulted than you - LOL  Wink

Seriously though, any list is pretty much just one person's opinion because music is so subjective. What one person thinks is gold, another would consider trash.

Quoting Victrola (Reply 14):
I think they confined themselves to Rock and Blues guitarists.

Then what are Les Paul and John McLaughlin doing on the list? Both are amazing players but don't fit the rock or blues genres. If they are going outside rock and Blues, then they should include guys like Al DiMeola. He is arguably the greatest guitarist on the planet.

FWIW, here are a couple others I would have included - certainly placing them above lots of guys who DID make it:
Mick Taylor
Son Seals (you Chicago Blues fans know who I mean)
Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner - listen to Lou Reed's Rock & Roll Animal album
Larry Carlton
Leo Kottke

Charo on guitar, Karen Carpenter on drums and Candy Dulfer on sax would make a cool girl band!

Rolling Stone's admiration of blues influence is damn obvious with the top five: Hendrix, Duane Allman, BB King, Clapton, Robert Johnson. It's just something one has to factor in while reading this list.

Quoting EA CO AS (Reply 1):
And where the hell is Alex Lifeson from Rush? He's definitely in the top 25.

I love Rush, but to me, he's not top 25 material. He has some great parts, but many times he just disappears, both in studio and live stuff. I think he's the least exceptional of the 3 members of the band.

Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (The Doobie Brothers)

Not just the Doobies stuff, but also the studio stuff, especially Steely Dan. He does most of the really memorable guitar work on the early Dan albums.

Quoting MadameConcorde (Reply 12):
Should I name Django Reinhardt as my absolute number one?
He is certainly the best guitarist ever...
Just think of his missing fingers...

And I'll give a shout out for Jerry Garcia, another superlative guitar player who is missing a finger. I'm sure there's a lot of opinion about putting Jerry #13 on the list, but he's just a fabulous player, especially on live recording. Block out the images of tie-dies and reefer, and listen and I think you'll agree! Put on the tie-dye and smoke some reefer, and you'll probably agree more!  Smile

Dick Dale

Good call. He's on there, #31

Quoting Victrola (Reply 22):

I became a Dead fan in the 80's, so one of my fav albums is "Dead Set", and your comments made me think of the solos on "Friend of the Devil" and "Candy Man", amongst others. So much detail, without loosing the melody at the same time.

I guess I'm on a bit of a Dead revival kick these days

Dead Set" gets a lot of plays on my car stereo these days...

Did Francis Vincent Zappa show up anywhere on the list? FZ is my #1 guitar hero.

Good call - #45.

I'd put Paco de Lucía well up in the list .

Shout out to Steve Howe - I loved their writeup for him at #69, which is way low, in my book:

Quote:
During an era when everyone wanted to be a bluesman, Howe brought jazz, country, flamenco, ragtime and psychedelia into the mix for prog — rockers Yes. The ringing harmonics that open "Roundabout" may be Howe's best-known moment but Close to the Edge shows his range, from acoustic delicacy to high-octane riffs.

Also David Gilmour at #82 is an insult. Some of the tastiest guitar work (if not the most complex) of all time, in my book.

I think RS hates prog rock. Way too ornamental and excessive in their biased opinion.
Inspiration, move me brightly!

Yes, seriously. She's an amazing guitar player:

She had a brief but good role in the movie Airport '79 (The Concorde).

The omission of Joe Strummer is almost criminal. Some other names missing from that list that truly deserve a mention:

Johnny Marr
Peter Buck
Paul Weller
Phil Manzanera
