Canada gets Obama's 1st foreign visit as president
Saturday, January 10, 2009 | 2:57 PM
CBC News

U.S. president-elect Barack Obama plans to travel to Canada for his first international trip after he takes office, the Prime Minister's Office confirmed Saturday.

"We have been in close contact with president-elect Obama's transition team. We can confirm that the president-elect has accepted the prime minister's invitation to visit Canada soon after he is inaugurated," a statement released by Stephen Harper's office said.
_______

It has been a tradition of presidents to make their first foreign visit to Canada, except in the case of Bush in 2001, so not terribly surprising. I wonder if he will draw more people than he did when he went to Europe during the primaries?

I think it's nice tradition. It reinforces the close friendship between Canada & the US. Do newly elected Canadian PMs do the same?

Even if the Canadians are a Winter-folk I can't imagine them standing for hours in the cold. Ottawa in the Winter is not the same as Berlin in the Summer. Also aren't most Canadians in Florida this time of year?

I think that may be what they meant. Obama's first visit to Canada will be to Fort Lauderdale. Big grin

It only seems right that he should visit his inferior neighbours  Big grin Joking aside it makes sense. His next trip after Canada should be Mexico.

Not surprised here. Though remember that Bush is also in the same party as Palin who feels since she can see Russia that gives her foreign experience.

Mending fences and chatting with your neighbors is always a good idea. There's been so much bad blood the last few years that it's a good place to start. Our economies are merged in a lot of ways and it's important that we work together for our mutual benefit. And yes, the next stop should be Mexico.

The next thing the G could do is shitcan that stupid assed "Everyone's got to have a passport to go to Windsor" nonsense.

I doubt if President Obama will get here before the snow is gone. Most of these first visits have been pretty short if I recall.

I was watching a CBC-TV interview an American pundit this morning and he commented on how important it was for Canada for the leaders of the two countries to hit it off personally. People underneath them take their lead from that.

I don't know how P.M. Harper and Pres. Obama will get along. I don't see much chemistry developing. Chretien and Clinton seemed to be pals. I guess the worst time was with Trudeau and Nixon, or maybe Johnson and Pearson - Johnson apparently grabbed Pearson by the lapels and complained "You pi$$ed on my rug!" after Pearson made anti-Vietnam War statements in the USA on his way to Washington.

That's funny. If my memory serves me correctly from when I visited there a few years ago, our tour guide in Gettysburg informed us that Clinton was the first President to screw up the tradition of visiting Gettysburg National Cemetary during the Presidency, something that's probably a little more important than visiting Canada first.    And he had 8 years to do that....
You want to continue going about "traditions" now?

Damn right!!!

Anywhere else in Canada is like going to Bismarck North Dakota!!! Oh, I'M ONLY KIDDING!!!

Joke aside... ah, good that President Obama will visit Canada. I think the next place he should go is England and shake hands with the Queen. I wonder what her view is now that an African American president is in the White House?

would you care to elaborate?
Visiting a cemetary is more important than reaffirming/strengthing/supporting the special relationship the US and Canada have?

yes....Bush was a f***ing idiot and WILL be remembered as the WORSE US President in the last 100 years. Did Bush ever go to Canada?

Harper was at the Intercontinental hotel on Bloor just west of Avenue Rd. in Toronto at around 630pm.

I don't think I've ever seen so much security for a Canadian before in my life.

I was not impressed with having to cross the street to get to class.

Screwed up? Bush was closer to Mexican President Vicente Fox, and spoke Spanish, so he elected to go Mexico first. I don't see the big deal in that. Whether he "screwed up" is a matter of opinion only.

I find it funny too - Harper lives in Calgary where I work for a few days each week. I fly on a company jet out of a private terminal (opposite end of the airport from the main terminal). I've seen Harper land 2 or 3 times. He arrived at the same private terminal we use. But he does not come in - his car picks him up at the plane which is about 10 metres from where I sit at the window watching the flight operations. Before he gets off these cool looking security dudes in suits and ear thingys come into our area and ensure we don't go out onto the apron. I think it's funny - like watching an FBI team in a movie.

Anyway - I think a visit from the new American President is important too. It shows our close ties, friendship and reliance on each other as nations. Good move on his part to accept the invitation from our Prime Minister.

Cheers!

Canada is a foreign country? Odd, I could have sworn it was the 51st state.

Date has been confirmed for 19 February. It doesn't appear that it will be a very long visit and, as parliament is scheduled to be off that week, there most likely won't be an address of the joint houses of parliament.
