Chimp Victim Hangs On To Life

Quote:
The Connecticut woman viciously attacked by a 200-pound chimp who inexplicably went bananas remains in critical condition this afternoon and faces "life-changing, if not life-threatening injuries" to her face and hands, officials said.

The chimpanzee, named Travis, was shot dead by police in Stamford after the violent rampage Monday left a friend of its owner badly mauled.

Sandra Herold, who owned the 15-year-old chimp, wrestled with the animal after it attacked her friend, Charla Nash, 55.

Quote:
At the time of the 2003 incident, police said the Herold assured them that the chimpanzee - who was toilet trained, dressed himself, took his own bath, ate at the table and drank wine from a glass - was not a threat to others.

As awful as this story is, I must get a pet chimp. Sure, I'd buy .45 millimeter pistol the same day, but having a docile chimpanzee around would be awesome.

Whatever it is - it is a wild animal. How the hell can someone expect it to behave like a dog or cat? I feel sorry for the poor thing.

The owner should be jailed regardless of the outcome, it was illegal for her to have it in her home and to make matters worse she gave it drugs 5 minutes before the attack happened. Watch this space, the victim (her best friend) or her family will be filing a lawsuit as soon as the dust settles if she doesnt get put in jail for this.

I've been in Stamford since it broke. This story is completely nuts. Crews, equipment, and journalists from all over the world are here for this.

That's not true, according to her. She never gave the chimp Xanax and she was allowed to own the chimp through a license.

Still, I want a damn chimpanzee. Do you think I could train it to send resumes?

Yes. You could probably train it to write them and then send them too.

Todays NY Post and other news reports are noting that owner had a very strange relationship with the chimp. Apparently the simian would sleep besides her, bathe with her, consume wine and eat fancy foods with her among those things. It was almost like a human relationship and some neighbors were a little turned off by here relationship with the animal.

The state of CT is also looking at it's already tight laws on people owning exotic pets and making it even stricter. And yes, I expect the badly injured woman to sue, but I doubt the property and liability insurer for the homeowner to be involved as acts by exotic pets are probably excluded from coverage.

That was one disturbing relationship.....

My biggest question is why in the heck do you want to own a chimp? Other than the coolness and its intelligence factor, I really don't see the difference from owning a dog or cat.

Chimps? Not my cup of tea for pets... I'll adopt a chocolate/black/yellow lab, thank you very much...

I have no idea how these things get published. Perhaps a fake. Scared the hell out of me though.

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=6912308&page=1

Though police said Sandra Herold told them that shortly before the attack Monday she'd given the chimp Xanax, because he was agitated, Herold backtracked Wednesday on whether she'd administered the anti-anxiety drug to the animal.

Herold claimed she put the medication in the chimp's tea but the pills never dissolved. Police believe the drug may have contributed to the rampage.

"They were in the bottom. They didn't melt," Herold said.

The fact that she DID put the medication in his drink means its highly likely that a certain amount was dissolved and that he drank some, theres no way that you can say for sure it wasn't, she is not a pharmacutical professional that tested the amount of tablets left to say it didnt melt. Thats ridiculous. You try putting tablets in a cup of tea and tell me that you drink it and dont taste any medication even if the tabs are still in the bottom.

Yes she was but even thats in question.

http://news.scotsman.com/world/Chimp-attack-39As-I-stabbed.4995014.jp

Connecticut law requires anyone who owns a primate heavier than 50lbs to obtain a state permit. But Ms Herold was exempted from the law.
Dennis Schain, of the state's department of environmental protection, explained: "Given that the family owned Travis before this law was put on the books, and the fact that over the years the animal did not *appear to present a public safety risk, their possession of the chimpanzee was allowed to continue

*I wouldnt be surprised if the State got sued as well for neglegence, if they were supposed the regularly check the welfare and state of the chimp or any past attacks then they would be responsible too.
