Your Top 5 Of All-time Favourite Songs

Fri Feb 20, 2009 8:29 pm

The last similar thread I could find was from September 2007 so I assume it's OK to start a new one by now... I have recently made a CD with my all-time favourites (my Top 16) and was wondering:

What is your Top 5 of all-time favourite songs?

Mine is:
1) Hotel California - The Eagles
2) Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams
3) Losing my Religion - R.E.M.
4) November Rain - Guns 'n' Roses
5) Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chilli Peppers

"All time favourites" - does that mean they have to be among my favourites for the last 10 years (at least)? If yes:

Mercy Street - Peter Gabriel
Come Talk To Me - Peter Gabriel
Paths That Cross - Patti Smith
The Wild Wild Sea - Sting
Going Home - Mark Knopfler

And if "all time favourite" and "have been in my head for only a couple of years" aren't mutually exclusive, my list would go like this:

23 Minutes in Brussels - Luna
Kissy Kissy - The Kills
#4 - Sigur Ros
Comptine d'un autre été - Yann Tiersen
Temperature's Rising - Galaxie 500

In no particular order.

Actually, I listed Leonard as author not as performer...at least that's what I meant. I really, really enjoy Jeff Buckley's version. He adds a certain petulance to the song.

My favorite, though, is John Cale singing Hallelujah.

1. True Faith - New Order
2. Telegraph Road - Dire Straits
3. What Does It Take? - Junior Walker & the All Stars
4. Stay The Night - Benjamin Orr
5. Nothing Has Been Proved - Dusty Springfield

An "honorary" song on my top 5 is Tattooed Millionaire, by Bruce Dickinson. Everyone on this list, no matter what type of music they like, should have at least one Bruce Dickinson song on their Ipod (legally downloaded, of course!), because Bruce is also a 757 pilot.

Quoting Columba (Reply 27):
BLINK 182- DOWN

Bad choice  Wink their worst album was their self titled one IMHO.

This is hard for me... I have different lists, one for musically and one for lyrically. I tend to listen to the music more because I play guitar/bass/drums.

Musically (Enjoyable to perform, to me anyway)
1 - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
2 - Hier Kommt Alex - Die Toten Hosen
3 - My Immortal - Evanescance
4 - Mother Mary - Foxboro Hot Tubs (Green Day offshoot)
5 - Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen. Damn funky bass line  Wink

Lyrically:
1 - Adam's Song - Blink 182. Serious song about suicide by them, rather than toilet humour.
2 - The Hell Song - Sum 41
3 - The Show Must Go On - Queen
4 - When You F*cked Grandpa - Blink 182. You can YouTube that one yourself.... no way I'm linking it on here! Definitely NSFW. Or kids in general  Silly
5 - One I wrote, called "Iron Curtains". Political, depressing and kinda harsh about the realities of communism and war. Even written in a depressing key as well - F minor. It's just an idea and not finished but I have the barebones of the lyrics and a few good ideas for the music side of it.
