How Do I Make My CAR Sound Like A Jet Engine?

Mon Feb 23, 2009 12:36 am

Right, so this will probably sound absolutely ridiculous, I've posted this on various BMW car forums, and I think that people now think that I'm a total nutter.

Anyway, the sound of a car engine just doesn't do it for me at all, not even in the slightest, no matter what engine or back box the car has got. When people show off the noise of their BMW M3's, I'm just there thinking "Sounds totally crap compared to a jet engine."

So basically, what I want to do is make my little 1900cc BMW petrol engine sound like a jet engine. Is this possible? I doubt it is, but I thought I would post anyway. I'm guessing I'm not the only one who would want such a thing? :P

- Rich

Oh and btw, this is pretty much what I had in mind:

But it would also be nice to have an "off" switch so I can leave my house without annoying the neighbours!

1. Go to your nearest military airport.

2. Record jet sound.

3. Play back recording in your car tape player/ CD player.

4. Turn up volumne to maximum

5. Open all windows.

They closest you could get is what some folks down in Melbourne (Australia) did with a Ford 24 valve 4L inline six turbo engine. They had the engine delivering 1400hp. (from a standard output of about 330-340hp)

It certainly sounded like a jet engine.

Drive one of these-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49vkeGchF-o
It's a turbine powered Le Mans car from the 60s. In that decade, a few teams tried turbine cars, even in F1. A Lotus turbine powered car nearly won the Indy 500 in the late 60s, but it ended up running out of gas with a couple laps left. After that, rules were changed and they no longer had a chance to be competitive. Their biggest downsides, as far as I can make out, are that they are very loud, get terrible mileage, and only operate effectively under very narrow operating conditions, mostly when the car is flat out on straights rather than accelerating out of tight corners, one reason why the turbines fared much better at Indy than Le Mans or F1.

For kicks, someone I know from track days here in Miami added a helicopter turbine motor to his mini cooper S, it drives the rear wheels and makes a hell of a noise. I'm trying to get my friend to upload a video of the car on youtube.

To get a jet engine sound, you need a fan of some sort, or a turbine, rotating at extremely high speeds. There's nothing you can really do to your car to replicate that unless you some how install a turbine engine.

Now if if were just exhaust, your on/off switch thing has already been done plenty of times over an over. On our ski boat, I have a switch I can flip that will direct the exhaust which usually comes out of the stern drive underwater, and direct it through pipes in the back of the boat underneath the deck. Sounds great when you are at full throttle. But scares the crap out of you when you forget you have them coming out the pipes and start the engine in a metal boat house! SHEESH!

Back in 1963, you could have had Chrysler sell you a turbine-powered car.

or you could get one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Turbine_Car

You are not going to get a turbine sound with a car's IC engine.

Just pull the engine out and drop in an Allison 250, or maybe a PT-6 or something. Sure it'l take a couple afternoons to get everything to connect, but you'd have your sound...

Or just buy the same motorcycle that Jay Leno has - he has one powered by an engine from a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter (I think). Sounds so sweet when it starts up.  biggrin

I was always a big Lotus fan and I can remember the noise that these Lotii (Lotuses) made. Nowhere near as great as Rolls Royce Olympii (Olympuses) but still quite amazing for these little cars. No Ferrarii of the time could come anywhere close to them. They must have burned a lot of petrol indeed.

I've always wondered what it would be like to strap a GE-90 to say a BMW Z4 and just full throttle the thing. Other than the wheels ripping off, which, for whatever reason say doesn't happen, I'd just think it'd be cool.

But yeah, you aren't going to get your car to sound like a jet engine unless you have a jet engine or turbine underneath the hood.

Its very easy....

1) Grab some of your overweight friends

2) Serve plenty of beans and other gas inducing food

3) Ask 'em to let 'er rip in unison whenever you desire jet engine sound*

You have to be, considering you don't like the sound coming out of an M3. That's blasphemy in its purest form. The current E90 M3 has IMO the best sounding V8 out there after the Audi RS4/R8.

Heck I love jets as much as you do. But cars are cars and planes are planes. Apples and oranges.

They do work. I will warn you though, nobody but 'tards and people with no taste whatsoever in rice rockets and similar POSs use these. And seeing that you have a BMW, you'd be worthy of crucifixion if you put one of these on your car.

You gotta love those aftermarket part companies that promote their (crappy) products by showing absolutely unrelated pictures of half naked ladies on their ads.

What you need is a car with a very quiet engine and a quiet exhaust.
You will also need turbos fitted into the engine. Other than a turbo I don't know anything that could be installed into a car which has a turbine that produces a type of jet sound without excessively modification the car. Those cars with jet engines sticking out from the back needs to be certified for driving I think. And there is also the price to pay for all that.
What you should do is to install a turbo or two on the engine. Of course the more turbos the engine has the better. I have heard of quad turbo engines before but I don't know what are they like. What I know about twin turbos is that it has a small turbo and a bigger turbo. The small turbo operates at slower engine speeds and the bigger turbo kicks in at a higher speed. Even a single turbo can make a great sound even on a oil burner.
Everything needs to be quiet to ensure that your turbo is heard.
I hope this helps

I don't see any reason why these people can't hook you up...

You'll struggle to make your actual engine sound like a jet engine, but these guys can probably do what you want with regards to giving you the sound...
