Vista Has Just Reached A New Level Of Annoying

Fri Feb 27, 2009 8:45 am

I recently downloaded the Vista Service Pack 1 in order to be able to run a certain game. So I do, but once SP1 was done installing, it appears my graphics driver goes apeshit, and my screen goes black. I've heard that such problems may occur, and the remedy should be to re-install the driver in fail-safe mode. Which I've done, without success. A minute or so after I log in to Vista, the screen goes black and sports the "no-input"-message for a short while.

I've been looking around the net for some answers, but have been unable to find any info on this type of problem.

If anyone knows what to do, please help! (I'm about to either tear my hair out, or issue a fatwa for everyone working for Microsoft)

Cheers

Get rid of Vista!
The worst operating system ever!
Find a way to install Windows XP.

I've had problems with Vista.
My mother's computer has Vista and it gave me headaches. I remember downloading a few images and it saved in to 5 different folders. Even after I erased all images after I burned on to CD, they kept reappearing after I erased them.
Gosh I hope no one else sees what I have downloaded.  pray

As for Vista i never liked it but it seems all new computers have Vista. I changed all of my Vista system to XP.

I really don't want my younger relatives (nieces & cousins) to see nude images that I downloaded on her computer. Vista is AWFUL and very dangerous!
There were times where I'd download an image and not given the choice which folder to put them in.
Yet I'd spend an entire evening erasing the same image over and over again.
Why on earth would Microsoft do this?
Vista is almost as bad as using a Mac!
Too bad it's 500 miles away and I can't monitor if those images pop up again.
I'd rather have Windows 95 instead of Vista.

I know that, thank you very much. Can't stand Macs, though. Have had plenty of mind-numbing experiences with Macs om high school and now in my journalism program though. Drives me crazy. Macs become shit when they're a couple of years old, especially with university tech support deciding to constantly update software on the old machines, making them awfully slow and dicky to work with. A new Mac on the other hand, is alright, but with limited cash-flow, it only stays new for a short while.

Okay, flash-drive, you have it your way, like you said besides the issue anyway.

As for XP vs VISTA, I always found XP to be problematic certainly up until the last Service Pack. (it practically updated every single day for security and compatibility issues)
It however was a vast improvement over the previous versions and so is VISTA a better system than XP once they iron out all of its idiosyncrasies.
By that time it will probably be replaced again by another WINDOWS version and people will complain about that one too.

One thing to keep in mind when talking operating systems is the compatibility factor.
Windows has to be compatible with virtually every software piece out there released in both the past and the future, this will keep on giving problems and it shows most for Windows simply because it is used almost everywhere by almost everyone.

I've heard bad things about LINUX too from people who work with it on a day to day basis and I'm sure that MACINTOSH has its issues too.

Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac... oh, and did I mention Mac?  Wink

As a recent convert, I cannot sing its praises enough. As a previous Vista and XP user, the Mac is simply in a different world; nothing would make me go back to Windows.

I hope you have luck with the images, Superfly; that's an unfortunate situation to be in.

Goldenshield, I am aware of this; I think perhaps you maybe misread my post - it was meant to be quite lighthearted.  Smile

I understand that Windows is omnipresent in the world and will, of course, continue to use it; however, from a personal point of view, nothing would make me change my own PC back to Windows after having had a Mac.

Not to defend the Mac here, but that is in essense NOT a virus. Viruses are self-replicating. What happened in that case was someone taking advantage of a security flaw.

It closely resembles a worm, and like most all worms, it was user-initiated, and sent itself to others on his messenger lists (which is a form of replication, but not in the traditional sense.)

Never had any problems with Vista, it even outperformed XP on my old Acer notebook which wasn't even Vista certified: all-in-all, Vista and I got along about a thousand times better than XP and me.

Doesn't change the fact that I only see Vista when looking over my girlfriend's shoulder onto her computer's (which, strangely enough, is my old Acer notebook) screen, or see XP when I'm at work... and see a nice grey Apple being displayed on a white background whenever I boot up my own notebook.

As for viruses on Macs or not... who cares? There's anti-virus software for Macs as well... and, at least for me, getting a system which doesn't run the risk of being Virus-infested was extremely low on my list of reasons to switch to a Mac...  Wink

Exactly. Unlike Apple, who just makes everything obsolete with their new operating systems.

One person has a problem with Vista and all the Vista bashers come out. Fact is, millions of people are now happily using Vista every day without issues. It had a rough start because of compatibility issues, but Vista is now a very good operating system and far more safe and stable than XP.

Please. There is a reason I have not used XP for anything besides gaming in over 3 years. Vista is the most bloated, pos MS operating system ever. I had less frustration with ME. That said, a mac isnt perfect. there have been times ive wanted to thow the f***ing thing out a window and pray it gets run over by a truck. But i've had thousands more moments like that in years of using 3.1, 95, 98, ME and XP..

I was planning on getting a MacBook Pro in September, but instead had to move for my job (at my expense) so I picked up a Toshiba laptop (BTW, Toshiba, so far, is the best laptop brand I've owned) with XP, and I've been thrilled with it. Nearly every error has been the result of Firefox freezing up on me, and when I try the "problem website" on IE it works fine. In fact, I'm more annoyed with Firefox for their shitty Vista compatibility. My previous laptops for the past four years were XP, and I've never wanted to play laptop baseball more. Vista has been seamless, aside from Firefox (of all apps) screwing up, I guess since my laptop came with the latest release I've been in the clear. My singular Vista complaint is that I get double prompted every time I need to do something like delete or download a file -- I know what I'm doing. I could fix this probably, but I'm too lazy.

Absolutely Cadet57, I have an old MAC 9600 (basically a G3) in a closet, but without question it'd fire up and execute as the day it was new. Along with a couple of retired iMac DVs (G3) thev MACk trucks of computers...still flawless in performance if called upon. 2 iBook G3s both still kicking butt if needed (usually loaners or used to teach elderly peeps about 'puters. G4s desktops (dual 450), 633,QS Dual 1Ghz (2),MDD Dual 1.42 (2). iBooks (3), T4, iMac (1) ...not to mention the G5s & MacPros. Those Mac computers are 12+ to 4 years old - only thing ever replaced in them are more RAM, larger HD upgrades and new PSUs (Power Supply Units). I own one PC running XP...and it has given me more headaches than all my computers combined! It's basically my testbed machine to just f*k with sketchy downloads and apps just to see what'll happen and what works and what doesn't.

You're right, Doona's Tech Department has no business messing around with Macs...all they're doing is giving Macs a bad name (which Mac customer support and (some) Mac Geniuses can do all by themselves)! Actually, everyone's tech support is pretty much worthless if you get in a jam.

I was recently helping a friend troubleshoot on a new Vaio laptop, where Vista is claiming 150GB's of 250 are already used. You can imagine my surprise when she said 'she's downloaded absolutely nothing since she's pulled it outta the box. Trust me..she wouldn't know how to anyway. Tomorrow or so, I be back over trying to get that HD space back.

Friends shouldn't let friends by PCs (desk or laptops)

Oh, I even have two of the old Mac Classics - the ones that look like an oversize shoebox standing upright with a black & white CRT in it...and yep, they both still work.

The issues I have or had on my dell Inspiron 1720 with Vista:

1. Sound problems, especially when connected over WLAN: That is a common issue with the Inspiron 1720, but the sound problems ARE connected to Vista. No drivers available that remedy the sound issues.

2. Bad graphics card drivers: Nvidia needed more than 1 1/2 year to provide useful drivers for Vista. Today, it runs smooth, but it took a lot of time for that.

3. Performance: It takes ages to boot, it feels slow everywhere, it uses a lot of Ram...

I do not claim everything is bad with Vista. It seems safer than XP, I actually like Aero, although I could do without.

It is true that MS-bashing is common, and we all know how XP was bashed in the beginning. But, XP was extremely stable. Vista might run stable, as well, but it is no improvement in many ways, and it uses way too many ressources.

At the moment we simply don't have the mechanisms in place to prevent running harmful code from being run in any consumer grade environment. Even today's state-of-the-art software verification science concerning controlled environments is not perfect.

Oh please - Macs would be facing similar problems (in terms of Viruses turning up everywhere and causing millions of damage) if there were as many around as there are Windows PCs all over the world.

And, yes, I use a Mac... and much prefer it to my previous Windows-based computers.

But, realistically, the tiny amount of sales of Apple computers (be it stationary or mobile) in comparison to those using MS's operating systems is probably the best safety net that Macs have. But sales are increasing, and I wouldn't be even the slightest bit surprised if we start seeing Mac viruses popping up before too long...

No. A large part of the malware that's around depends on Windows-specific problems such as ActiveX or other architectural weaknesses.

The "security by obscurity" myth is popular, but that popularity is primarily owed to the simplicity of the argument, not to any actual foundation.

What you've written would not happen on a Mac.

You are correct. The game would never run on a Mac in the first place.  Smile

Back to topic, Vista does suck major, major balls. Almost as bad as Windows ME. If I could be bothered to format the whole damn thing and install XP I would.
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

Wrong. If it runs on a regular PC it will also run on a Mac.

BTW, Toshiba, so far, is the best laptop brand I've owned

Funny. I think you are the only person to ever actually like a Toshi*ba. I cant even think of how many of those I've fixed over the years. Not to mention how my friend went thru four, yes FOUR of the same model before he told Toshi*tba to stick it and bought a dell.

Yuck, at UND we all had Dell laptops for the aviation program. I probably went through five of them before I had one that lasted for more than three months, there was always some new software/hardware issue, and the battery's life was that of a housefly. In my last year, we got new Dell laptops, and the screen managed, over six months, to detach on one side from the keyboard. That's what I call quality, and of course, the battery was about as worthless as a single use AA.

My first laptop was a Toshiba and it worked fine, I guess I didn't know better! It was something like this:

Not a single issue with my XPS yet for the 6 months I've had it.

Sure, because the Intel Mac of today is in fact just another PC. It literally took Apple decades to work out the succesful formula. If you dislike the weird Apple mouse and keyboard, just use the ones from your PC.

Good, now I see we're not the only ones going through the same problem as you with the stupid batteries. We kept having trouble with my girlfriends, we finally got them to send a tech out (on their dime) and found their was a hairball (in a 5 week old computer) the size of a small cat. Apparently its part of the manufacturing process that they shave a cat and stick the fur in the system.....
