2009 NHL Trade Deadline

Tue Mar 03, 2009 1:05 am

With the deadline less than 48 hours away to the most exciting trade deadline in all of sports, I figured we should get a trade tracker going with all completed deals and rumors.

The big trades so far have been:

PIT sending Ryan Whitney to ANA for Chris Kunitz and Eric Tangradi.

NYI sending Mike Comrie ( and Hillary Duff) and Chris Campoli to OTT for Dean McCammond and a 1st round pick.

The Isles have held Bill Guerin out of the last two games and was rumored to have completed a deal on sunday to a eastern Conference team....we are all still waiting.

Perhaps the Isles should think of trading their entire management team in exchange for, say, New Jersey's or Detroit's...  biggrin

I can only hope that this time the Isles hang on to their picks and young players and manage to not succumb to the mermaid's song of ageing, overpriced free agents.

Does anybody else think Detroit is going hunting fora goalie? They have limited cap room and their goaltending has been pretty weak of late.

I'm still waiting for the Leafs to make several big trades but i have a feeling i'm going to be disappointed.

That's the million dollar question. Given the logjam in the East for the playoffs, I think there will be a lot of teams looking to potentially buy, hell given Carolina's position on the bubble I'm not sure whether Rutherford will buy or sell, same for Pittsburgh and Ray Shero. I'll say one thing - after that awful showing against the Thrashers on Sat. night, the 'Canes need a defense who won't let Cam Ward down. Gleason, Pitkanen, Seidenberg, Babchuk, and Corvo are all good starts but they need dope-slapped for letting Atlanta back in that game.

Man of the two current Red Wings goalies who thought that it'd be Osgood who crashed back to Earth from a good showing last season? The question is who would they try to pick up? They could make a play for Emery but that's just begging for a headache in the locker room. Try to acquire Gerber, maybe? Or wait for the next time Ottawa tries to bring him up on re-entry waivers? I think Gerber's a decent goalie who gets a lot of unfair criticism. I don't think he'd work out well in Detroit though - he seems to do better in "non-traditional markets."

I am hoping that bruins do something to solidify their defense. It has been rumored they are talking with Annaheim about Chris Pronger.

They definitely need to do something if they want to go deep into the playoffs.

Seriously, i see Boston getting a Leaf d-man, be it Kaberle or White. Last year we almost got Carter and a first round pick for Kaberle but Kaberle didn't wave his no-trade clause.

Lots of people hitting the waiver wires thus far today:

Craig Adams
Brendan Bell
Martin Gerber
Brendan Morrison
Peter Olvecky
Eric Perrin
Erik Reitz
Gary Roberts
Miroslav Satan
Jon Sim
Aaron Voros

That's on top of Tom Preissing, Joe Callahan, Lawrence Nycholat, Steven Goertzen, and Bill Thomas getting waived yesterday, although the Flames picked up Nycholat.

It's been surprisingly quiet so far, despite all the rumors.
Big move of the day was the Rangers claiming Avery off waivers from the Stars...and I could not be happier that the Stars no longer have to worry about that p.o.s. Sather and the NYR fans want the guy so badly, it's going to be hilarious when Tortorella and him get into their first major fight. Over under--2 weeks.

If the Caps or the Sabres have some cap room, it could make sense for them. Even the Red Wings, really.

At a discount, Satan could actually be a very good pickup. He has playoffs experience (went to the final and lost to skate-in-the-crease Brett Hull) and can get very hot (and very cold).

I seriously dobut Florida will trade him now that they're in the thick of a playoff race. Trading him now would be suicidal.

Only if he plays on the first two lines. Therrien used him on the third and fourth lines most of the year, and he only has 17 goals, hardly the 30 we were promised by Shero.

Any rumors involving the Columbus BlueJackets?

The word is they're trying to trade Pascal Leclaire to the Sens for Antoine Vermette. I've also heard that Colorado could be in the mix, perhaps trading Ian Laperrière to the Jackets for Leclaire.

One rumor that seems to not be going away is that the Flyers may try to deal prospect James Van Riemsdyk to the Thrashers for goalie Kari Lehtnonen. Lehtonen is an RFA at the end of the season while Biron and Niittymaki are UFAs (perhaps one of them get included in the deal). I could definitely see the Thrashers being a holding facility for teams needing some cap relief since they have a lot of cap space and if some higher salary Thrashers get dealt (The Kovalchuk trade rumors seem to never cease and if he's going to be traded, it would likely be at next season's trade deadline if he doesn't have a new deal in place.), they might need those big salaries in order to made the salary floor.

Quoting JFK69 (Thread starter):
The big trades so far have been:

The Devils trading Anssi Salmela to the Thrashers in exchange for Niclas Havelid and Myles Stoesz (A not very notable prospect who'll probably not make it past the ECHL level.) is not as big of a deal as those others, but it does give the Devils some solid depth on the blueline. Havelid is most likely a rental, as the rumors are that he may return to the Swedish Elite League to finish out his career.

Quoting YooYoo (Reply 2):

They'd have to send some money elsewhere in order to pick one up. They've got about $250,000 in cap space, so their options are limited.

It depends on two things: 1) do the Panthers believe they have a chance of re-signing him in the offseason; 2) how big are the packages other teams are offering. If the Panthers don't think they can re-sign him, they will listen to offers. Once the right offer comes around, look for him to go. Boston and Montreal have been the two teams I've heard most about being interested in his services, but take that with a grain of salt.

Quoting Us330 (Reply 7):

With the new salary cap restrictions, teams are more hesitant to try to pull off the big deal. You won't have the salary dumps of years gone by when teams like Dallas would absorb one of your bad contracts as long as you tossed in a young player with huge upside, while Dallas would trade you 2-4 ready-to-play young gunners. Trades are much more likely to occur within hours of the deadline, not days. Look for most of the activity to occur on March 4, but I'm still not expecting too much.

Texan

edit: by "not expecting too much" I mean it should be a normal year compared to the last few. I'm not expecting 35-40 trades tomorrow.

The Avs need to move Leopold, Lappy or Arnason for some goal help. Aside from the Columbus rumor, there's also an Oilers rumor since Visnovsky is out, although Tom Gilbert has pitched in quite a bit in Visnovsky's absence. I heard a Boston one too but I doubt they'd move Rask or Thomas and Manny for Leopold just doesn't sound right.

Speaking of Arnason, he needs to get on the first Greyhound out of Denver come April. IIRC Ryan Stoa comes out of school after this season and TJ Hensick is also a serviceable option.

Bittersweet to see Leopold go. He had an excellent upside in being an offensive-minded D but all those injuries have caused him to fall short of his true potential.

If Nycholat can put up the gaudy numbers he did for Binghamton in 07-08, sweet! Never really heard of him but it looks like he's put up good numbers in the AHL but was never quite able to deliver in the NHL level it seems.

What kind of pick did the Avs get?

He may be past his prime and is longer the first-line threat he was a decade ago, but he still has Stanley Cup experience and can play on a wing with either Crosby or Malkin. Satan will be gone at the end of the year, I'd rather have Guerin than Satan long-term.

(Some are saying that the preseason game in K.C. next season is a kick the tires sort of thing, and that Wang is using it as leverage in regards to the Coliseum renovation.)

Rumors are swirling that Gaborik is being shopped by the Wild.

I would never expect a player in return especially since garth Snows plan is so stockpile as many picks as humanely possibly. With that said, I was expecting something a little higher than a 5 pick. Like the guys on TSN said, last year, this results in a 3, maybe even an 2 rounder.

Times are a changing in the NHL.

I just hope PIT dosen't expect a Hossa type performance out of billy like last year...just not that type of player.

I'm loving the fact that this week the NHL Network is having a free preview week, so I'm watching the extended version of NHL Live instead of listening to it on NHL Home Ice on SiriusXM.

They're doing a special NHL Live today from 12p-3p, then a trade edition of On The Fly (what a great show!) afterwards. I get NHL Network regularly here in PIT and I absolutely love it! Screw Versus! I'd just as soon follow the league with NHL Network and the Pens blog for the PG.
It's a Great Day for Hockey!

I'm beginning to wonder if Charles Wang is purposely screwing the team up so that it will be easier for him to either sell them on the cheap or move them to K.C.

That'd be counterintuitive. Screwing the team up means their sales price takes a hit too, because who honestly wants to buy a losing team that has no hope of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel anytime soon? If I recall correctly, Wang has a good bit of his own money tied up into the Lighthouse project, so I don't think a move to KC is coming at his hands anytime soon. The Coliseum needs to be renovated or replaced, no doubt about that, but I think Wang would REALLY like to make it work on the Island.

My fiancée's mother has NHL Network as part of her Direct TV package. The day before the Winter Classic they were running a marathon of previous outdoor games - the 1991 preseason game in Vegas, the Heritage Classic, and last year's Winter Classic. It was fun to watch!

Also looks like the Coyotes get Scottie Upshall and a 2nd round pick from the Flyers for Daniel Carcillo and the Rangers get Nik Antropov from the Leafs for a 2nd round pick and a conditional pick.

(Some are saying that the preseason game in K.C. next season is a kick the tires sort of thing, and that Wang is using it as leverage in regards to the Coliseum renovation.)

Agreeing with Garnet here. In order for Wang to make money, he needs the lighthhouse project. Him and Rexcorp (the builders) have already put in 10 million into the planning process. The Town of Hempstead is holding up the process now by being a bunch of pricks about the enviornmental. Most people know that someone is getting their wheels greased. It has been this way for years in nassau. Funny note, It was Town of Hempstead night at the coliseum a few weeks back and when they played a video greet by the bitch that is holding up the process, I have never heard that much booing for a non hockey related issue at a hockey game before....It was great.

The only way Wang sells this team is if the project does not get approved. The game in KC is just a reminder to the politicians that they better get their act together.

Phoenix gets a nice return on it - Nigel Dawes, Dmitri Kalinin, and Petr Prucha.

Dominic Moore goes to the Buffaslugs in return for a 2nd round pick.
