VAT Exempt Phone Calls.

Tue Mar 03, 2009 11:03 pm

Just got my latest mobile bill and as per normal I have exceeded my monthly 1000 minutes, by four minutes!!

There is a breakdown at the end of the bill showing the VAT element (of the monthly sub, calls and data usage) of £7.82 and it says "VAT Exempt Calls - 0".

Can someone give me a example of a aforementioned call? Not a free call, as there is no charge in the first place to add the tax to!

Thanks.

I'd heard it was to do with international calls, where VAT is not applicable. Not 100% sure though, as although I'm VAT registered, I don't use my phone for international calls, so have never had cause to query it.

Brings me back to the point about the initial charge for he call.

If you call France from the U.K at say 10p per minute, you charged that 10p + VAT.

If you are roaming and make or recieve a call while in France at, say again, 10p per minute you are billed from your operator again at 10p + VAT so it can't be that either.

I'm intrigued...................

What number would you call that is chargeable yet zero rated for tax?!

If you call France

Again, just a hunch, but VAT is paid on goods and services in the Eurozone. Perhaps calls made outside Europe are not subject to VAT?

Same again, I went to Barbados two weeks ago (and wish I bloody stayed looking out the window!) and all calls in and out are subject to VAT @ 15% on my bill.

It's a mystery!

Hmmm, this is interesting. Maybe it's for calls both made AND received abroad while roaming - for example, if you were in the USA and made a call to the USA? Unless you made local calls (and not just calls back to Europe) while you were in Barbados, in which case I am incorrect!  Silly

I don't think it matters where you've made or received calls. The bill is paid in the UK to a UK registered company and is therefore subject to VAT regardless. I can't think of a situation where VAT wouldn't be added.

I guess it remains a mystery. Or just give your carrier's billing department a call and see if they can shed some light...
