Your Pet Peeve(s)

Wed Mar 04, 2009 11:45 pm

Let's make a list of our personal pet peeves.

Here's mine:

1. Walking really slowly in front of me (and not letting me get by)
2. Drivers cutting corners and talking on their cell phones
...

Feel free to post yours.

I don't deal well with stupid....and I don't mean a lack of a degree or anything, I just mean stupid...lacking in common sense, curiosity about what's going on in the world...that sort of thing.

People who spit in the street or any public places. I'm sure they wouldn't do it on their carpets at home, so why do it where everyone else has to hear and see them  grumpy

1. saying "I could care less about xxxxx," when the correct phrase is, "I couldn't care less about xxxx."

2. self diagnosing medical problems and expecting others to pity you or excuse you from something, like "I had a touch of the flu." Well, the flu is a killer and getting a touch of it is like getting a touch of cancer - not possible. Or, more broadly, my complaint is anyone using technical jargon they are not qualified to discuss - around here you hear "on short finals" a lot made by non-pilots, or college kids repeating what they read in their textbooks today or hear their professor say. Describe the situation plainly and don't use terms you aren't educated enough to use!

3. People cruising in the left lane, not moving to the right lane and not making it easy to pass.

Right now it's the Moron's who walk around Kandahar Airfield at night with no reflective belts/lights on when wearing CAMOUFLAGE UNIFORMS, guess what it works, we can't see you in the dark. Good job the speed limit is 16 KPH.

4, Slow drivers.

5, People jaywalking on busy streets.

Lots of influenza strains out there. Some mild some severe. A touch of the flu would refer to a mild case. And it is possible to have a touch of cancer as cancer varies in severity you can be riddled with tumors or have one small contained tumor. Cancer is a very generic term.

As someone who works in the fast food industry, one of my pet peeves is when people in the drive through line either
A) Don't have any idea what they want to order when they get to the speaker so they have to stare at the menu for 5 minutes while the line behind them is getting longer
B) Fiddle around with their change in their car while they are at the pay window, delaying other people
C) Don't say "thank you", or treat me like a dog
D) Other random things
Sorry, I was on the landline

1. People who use "net speak", "SMS speak" and "l33k speak".

2. People who don't use proper spelling and grammar.

3. Slow drivers who refuse to get off the fast lane.

Just a clarification on point 2 above, I mean this as a criticism on people who are too lazy to type properly and/or check their spelling and grammar (thankfully no one on here as far as I can tell), rather than those who struggle with communicating in English. English is a second language for me as well, being originally from Hong Kong, and I understand the difficulties in learning a language where the grammatical rules are completely different from that of your native language, not to mention the exceptions to virtually every rule. At least these people try to make their post comprehensible.

Hmm, where shall I begin?

- People who having reached the top of an escalator then stop dead in their tracks.
- Parents who have little or no control over their children.
- Parents who have little or no control over their child's pushchair/buggy.
- Motorists behind the wheel who are busy with a myriad of things except for the matter at hand ... driving the car.
- People in supermarkets who vacantly watch while their groceries are being checked by the cashier and when the cashier is finished then decide to search in their often voluminous purse/handbag for their money/bankcard/storecard.

I've only just begun. To be continued.
Youth is a gift of nature. Age is a work of art.

Er... all of the above, plus...

Noisy neighbours.

Telemarketing calls

Drivers cruising up the empty inside lane when it's obvious that everyone else has moved into the outside lane because there's a hold-up ahead that was signposted a mile ago. No, you're not special and everyone else has not moved aside to let you past.

Drivers who stop 10 meters short of the car in front at a red light and spend the next minute creeping forwards. You want to get a running start when the light changes? Well, you still can't go any faster than the car in front.

People who don't know each other walking slowly side by side, taking up the entire width of the pavement (sidewalk) so no-one can get past in either direction.

There are plenty more. Don't get me started.  grumpy

4. People who do not know how to drive properly, especially overly aggressive and under aggressive drivers.
3. People who use their cell phones as a means to obtain public attention.
2. Politics and Politicians. Everything about it and them. Politics usually results in doing more harm than good.

-Conformists/Mindless drones that are too afraid of being themselves so they do what everyone else thinks is 'normal' :-|
-I hate brand name clothing such as hollister, abercrombie, AE etc. It's way overpriced and everyone looks the same since ALOT of people where it.
-People that tell me to get a haircut, and anyone that thinks guys are 'supposed to' have short hair. Fuck you, I look retarded with short hair.
-People that over use the word professional/unprofessional in a business sense for every little thing.
-Drivers that don't check their blind spots. Some idiot woman almost hit me a couple of days ago cuz she didn't check her's.
-Jehovah's Witnesses
-Wiggers
-Frivolous Lawsuits
-People that don't mind their own business
-People that drive under or exactly the speed limit.

Continuation of my earlier post.

6, Slowness at the checkout stand at the store, price check, writing a check, or people paying in part with pennies.

7, Very loud motorcycles.

8, Political bumper stickers of all political sides but especially the far right, and my child is student of the month at X school.

9, People who pronounce foyer as foyer and not foyay as it is supposed to be.  flamed

10, Sensationalist headlines similar to the New York Post on TV news and print.

11, Breaking news on the KABC Los Angeles news hours, every 15 minutes it happens, for something as small as a ordinary blown tire on the freeway.

12, Nancy Grace's and now Jane Velez-Mitchel's obnoxiousness demeanor on HLN.

I used to HATE A,B, and C. I worked at a DQ in Alabama that was the second busiest in the state when I was in high school. From 6pm-1030pm on weekends it didn't matter HOW FAST you worked, the line was still wrapped around the building.

I would also like to add:

D) Ordering "just a water" in the drive thru.
E) Ordering 8 blizzards or 5 or more combos in the drive thru (take your lazy ass inside)
F) People with V8 diesel trucks that lacerate your eardrums when they pull up.

About 15 minutes later he proceeded to click (not as in dance clicking but flexing fingers till it makes a noise) everyone of his fingers, both his wrists and even his elbows! Yuuuuucccccckkk! I just can't stand it!

b) Swearing in public - in fact swearing at all. What is the point? If you absolutely HAVE to swear then please do it out of earshot of members of the public.

I work in a funeral home and you would be surprised at the number of parents who bring their kids and the minute they are in the door, they go one way and leave the kids to their own devices. The kids are running, yelling and climbing all over the funiture. Total lack of respect. And when they finally go hunt the little twits down, they have no idea what we have been witnessing and believe that their kids have been little angels.

My peeve? People who whistle or make other noises when they breathe. Blow your nose already! Unless you have a cold, I shouldn't be able to hear you breathe from 20 feet away!
Always a pallbearer, never a corpse.

People who don't know the difference between:
then and than
less and fewer

That last one isn't even just an internet thing. You'll find stores actually reinforcing that bad English all over the place. "20 items or less"  irked

I don't deal well with stupid....and I don't mean a lack of a degree or anything, I just mean stupid...lacking in common sense, curiosity about what's going on in the world...that sort of thing.

I must agree with you.

Also another one of mine is bad spelling and grammar.

I don't know if it's in other cities/counties outside of Seattle, but here, we have an Express [metro] bus system during rush hour that skips stops for efficiency. My pet peeve with this is watching people wave and yell at the bus from outside to stop at a non-express stop. Another related pet peeve is when people are just late for the bus and we have to wait for them.

Pet Peeves. I've got a lot of them. I've been described as being a real life version of "John Becker" from the sitcom Becker. I'll restrain myself and only mention a few (no particular order):

*Businesses who respond to customer complaints and requests for help with hostility. On the flip side, customers who complain for the sake of complaining.

*Not returning messages. If I leave you a message, I pretty much expect some sort of answer eventually (that is if I asked a question in the first place).

*People who sit and wait for me to vacate a parking spot while I am still loading groceries. If walking a little bit further from your vehicle to the store is going to kill you, perhaps you shouldn't be out shopping.

*Excessive cursing. Hit your fingers with a hammer? Some cursing is expected. Telling me about your new cell phone? You can do it without using the F-word.
I lift things up and put them down.

*When secretaries at work address me as if I am an 8yo riding a bike on their lawn rather than a 31yo physician trying to do his job and do what is best for his patients.

*People who try to stop a running doctor to ask him a question. Trying to stop a running doctor is tantamount to cutting off an ambulance with its lights on. We don't run unless we really mean it, so don't stop us if you see us running past.

*People who take an elevator up or down one floor, wasting electricity and doubling the length of my 10-floor journey.

*Patients who refuse to follow any of the recommendations I make to them as a doctor. If you aren't going to take your medicine, then why did you come to the doctor? Did you think I was going to wave a magic wand and make it better?

*People who don't learn from their mistakes. There is NO EXCUSE to get pregnant accidentally three times in a row.

*People who have lived in the U.S. for 20 years and still don't speak English. Sorry, there's no excuse.

*Being stood up for a date. At least have the decency to call me and cancel.

*People who think that their religion should run my life.

*Computers that hang, chug, and freeze.

*People who know how to talk about nothing except sports and yet are obese, fat, couch potato slobs.

-People at the checkout line at the gas station-who you can tell probably don't have that much money- who spend what seems like 15 minutes picking out all their scratch-off lottery tickets when you just want to buy a drink or pay for your gas and get on your way!

-Old people who can't figure out how to use their debit or credit cards with a pin number at a do-it-yourself type pay setup.... And in general old people that can't figure out how to use "modern" technology that's been around for 15 or more years. ATM's, computers, electronics, etc. Oh, and getting stuck walking behind old people on busy streets or escalators.

-People who drive under the speed limit in the left lane of a busy highway. People who drive under the speed limit anywhere! And people who have to slow down for a good look at traffic accident during rush hour.

-Gay men that act and carry themselves like women.

-Middle and upper class white youth who live in suburbs and rural areas that are all into rap music that's all about living the ghetto lifestyle and think they relate.

-Northeastern U.S.A. and British accents.

-The use of the word "dude" when addressing me.

-Mormons and Jahova's Witnesses banging on the door at 8am on Saturday morning.

-Bums and freeloaders on the street begging for change, cigarettes, etc.

-Getting stuck on a long-haul flight with somebody behind or in front of me that wants to go on and on to the passenger next to them about their meaningless lives. Or whining/crying/screaming kids whose parents don't know when to give them a whooping of shut the hell up!

-Unsuccessful artists (most artists) and their crappy art work that they think is God's gift to mankind and their raggedy-ass hippie clothes that look like they haven't been washed for ten years. And their mindset from outer space!

-PETA protesters, feminists, liberals, people with ADHD.

-Bicyclist who insist on riding in the middle of a busy road, instead of on the sidewalk where they belong! My car goes 50MPH, the bike, 10-15MPH. Just doesn't mix! Even if they have the right to be there!

-Fast food screw ups at the drive-thru, only to be discovered when I get home twenty minutes later! And when they put the fries in the take away bag upside down!

-Men with too much testosterone. Especially my ex-neighbor back home, who would have parties all night long, get drunk and let out these obnoxiously loud bellows and yells akin to mating calls, while presumable pounding his chest trying to attract all the woman within five square miles?

-Telemarketers

-Having a slow wireless internet connection while trying to watch porn on the internet.

If I am in the fast lane going 10-15 over the limit, passing slower cars, and some ass clown starts to ride my bumper and flash their lights. FU knucklehead... this whole commute thing is a team effort and your are screwing it up!!

When people do not give semi's room when they are turning; it's your fault if he hits you when hes turning not his

People who race past semis that are trying to merge to another lane and have had their signal on for miles!! Give the trucker a break would ya! Hell... I will change this to people who race by anyone trying to merge to another lane who have had their signal on!

And finally.... if their is an upcoming red light, I like to coast early. Some people feel the need to whiz around and be the first ones to the stop light, thats annoying. Even more so when their are other cars already waiting at the light!! Way to go ass hat... you get to be the first one of us to stop!!

Quoting CXB77L (Reply 37):
American English v British English,

1. People who call English British English or when it shows up on websites as English (UK). It's just English! I'm not against American English and realise there will be differences but you don't hear people saying German German and Swiss German - its German and Swiss German!

2. Ignorance - particularly those that think mental illness is just an excuse for a day off.

3. Men who assume that because I'm gay I want to sleep with them! That's just not how it works!

4. People driving Ferraris etc. who get annoyed when they get overtaken so feel the need to overtake you on the inside and get in your way even though they're doing precisely the speed limit and are now holding you up! I mean really!! how small must their penis be!

5. People who drive sports cars in general round London speeding off at every traffic light and just getting stopped again! There's no point!

6.People who don't show others respect, particularly ones in bad jobs - Yes I'm working at a census point and you've been stopped for 5 minutes, which I understand is annoying but was it really MY decision to stop you, have a census on your route etc. take be rude to me because of it!

7. People who tell everyone how much good they're doing by driving a prius who then preach to me about it! firstly if you really care don't drive a car at all!! you can't preach to an environmentalist!

8. People who assume because you work in a shop everything that shop does is your responsibility personally. "Sorry Sir but we don't have your size in today. I can send you one which should get to you within 3 days time." - "what do you mean 3 days time? This is all your fault etc."

-Text speak (all kids use it these days, English as a language is rapidly dying)

-Jeremy Kyle

-Drama queens

-How I can't stand so many things I feel really old rather than 21.

-The whole "celebrity" scene. A load of no talent nobody's being chased by scum of the Earth Paparazzi. Pretending they hate it then selling their stories and pictures to OK magazine.

-People who read such magazines.

-The fact that most of these celebrities are no-talent, loathsome, horrendous people who are only famous due to reality television.

-REALITY TELEVISION!!! I hate it!! And contest shows!! Especially how once we've had to endure a season of one of them (and with it being over the news for some reason) we have to then endure another season of something starting!!

-Simon Cowell

-How now most contest shows have to feature Simon Cowell.

-People who watch reality television / contest shows.

-Ant & Dec

There's a lot of other things too, but my dislike of them only manifests itself when I encounter them.

When behind the wheel I can't stand the following:
-Lorry drivers
-Bus drivers
-Motorists in general
-Pedestrians
-Cyclists
-Motorcyclists
-Side-seat drivers
-Rear seat drivers

Well... just people in general when driving.

Rant over...

After a week here in a city here in Germany you will see how lucky you are.  Silly Here, there has to be a special sign showing that you may bike on the pavement , otherwise you have to take your special bike lane (which btw isn’t everywhere), or simply bike on the road. The drivers here seem to be used to it though.  Smile

... and I would be one of those people who overtake cars that coast early to the lights. As far as I'm concerned, slowing down early constitutes slow driving, and if anyone's slow, I'll get past them, simple as that. I don't care if there is a red light coming up. Besides, how do you know that I'm not trying to get into the turning lane which has the green light, and you slowing down early blocks my entry into that turning lane? It has happened to me before, and I was quite dissatisfied at that sort of selfish behaviour. Not that they cared, the turning lights turned red while the other lights turned green, leaving me stuck at the lights for another cycle while they got a rolling start thanks to coasting early.

Oh, and if someone's right up my tail, I'd generally have the courtesy to pull over and let them by, regardless of whether I am speeding myself or not. If the other driver wants to go faster, let them.
