Catholic, Don't Read This!

Catholic? Bishops want you to stop reading this

ROME — Roman Catholic bishops in Italy are urging the faithful to go on a high-tech fast for Lent, switching off modern appliances from cars to MP3 players and abstaining from surfing the Web or text messaging until Easter.

The suggestion gives a modern twist to traditional forms of abstinence in the period Christians set aside for fasting and prayer ahead of Easter. And it shows the Church’s increasing focus on the use of technology as well as its perceived abuses.

Glad to see that the Catholic Church has entered the 21st century

Quoting Dtwclipper (Thread starter):

The deafening silence you hear now is the sound of empty Catholic churches in Europe (bar Poland).

Good or bad, I don't really care. But until the Catholic Church decides to stop being nag (telling grown-ups what to do, how, when, why, and to promise eternal damnation when people naturally show the Church the middle finger) and to start being more in touch with the people, their aspirations, concerns, questions, hopes, etc., then perhaps churches, chapels and cathedrals across the continent will resonate with more than just tourists' chatter.

The Catholic church is the last large western institution that actually has standards that are enforced. It is also the only church that is subjected to bigotry in the media and amongst those inside and outside the church who resent the immutable standards that have survived for centuries. Anyone can can gin up their own church these days, replete with moral relativism to make people feel good about their sin.
