"(CNN) -- Police in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca Wednesday arrested a woman for violating the country's ban on women driving, according to the Saudi English-language daily Arab News.

The woman, whose nationality and name were not released but who was described as being in her 20s, attempted to flee when she realized police had spotted her driving, Saudi authorities said."

When I saw the thread title, I assumed it was going to be about how to set women's rights back by 100 years. I want my money back.

Women are supposed to have rights? Gee... Who knew?  duck

There is actually a movement among women in Saudi Arabia to return to a more traditional interpretation of Islamic law where women, although they had different rights than men, at least were viewed as complimentary to men, rather than as essentially livestock with no rights at all.

It also sickens me that the U.S. has full and open trade relationships with S.A. when we started an embargo on South Africa for apartheid. I guess the rules are different when you're sitting on a mountain of black gold.

Oh my god. The Catholic Church wanted a 9yo girl to CARRY OUT A TWIN PREGNANCY??? Do you know the odds of survival of the mother and both twins in such a case?

Why do we tolerate organized religion until it gets like this? What kind of a monster would try to deny a girl life-saving medical care in the name of God?

It is out of line by the church. One has to wonder though was it the church or just some crazy, hard-line bishop?
