Converting Airplane Videos From DVD To Mpeg

Fri Mar 06, 2009 5:05 pm

I saw an old post on this topic, that ended with no viable suggestions.
I have some airplane videos taken using a camcorder/video cassette. I have burned those into a DVD as well, using the Sony cassette-DVD converter device.
What is the best software to use to rip the aviation videos out of the camcorder/cassette or the DVD? One thing to note is - the aviation videos are interspersed with personal videos, so I am looking for some control over when the ripping should start/end. I have a cool A380 take off in Sydney, a very nice take off from HKG, landing at SIN on a clear/beautiful day etc. I would love to separate them and post them on youtube.
Thanks All!

If you're running under Windows get hold of DVD Shrink (stick it into Google) - it's free.

You can then rip certain parts of the DVD with the "re-author" option - it's a piece of piss.

Once ripped and you have your Video_TS folder you can encode to Mpeg (or anything else you like i.e .m4v for iPhone, avi, MP4) with Handbrake - stick that into Google too to find a link also free.

If you're running a Mac use Mac The Ripper and Handbrake again, Handbrake is available for Windows and OSX.

Hope this helps.

If your DVD is scratched, I've found that AnyDVD works best, as it will compensate for bad blocks.

Don't you only get a 30 day trial on that before having to pay for it?

Get "format factory" it's free and will rip your entire DVD. Once you have a soft copy any number of free editors will allow you to chop and choose clips.

Yes, but it has the added advantage over the "free" software of filling in bad blocks caused by scratches that lock up the "free" ones.
