MacBook Won't Charge! Help

Sun Mar 08, 2009 11:57 pm

Hi all,

For anyone who knows a little about Macs, I'm stuck. My MacBook simply won't charge, it's not that the battery is flat so I am thinking it has something to do with the charger. When I plug it in, nothing happens. No light comes on - nothing. I will be going to the Apple store tomorrow. Until then, does anybody know what to do?

Cheers.

Have you checked that it's plugged in at the wall and switched on?  duck

Pray...

It might just be the fuse is gone in the charger, happened to me a while back. Better news than them saying your Mac's knackered!

I'm not female, so yes.

Gee I hope it isn't. I'm on windows at the moment, and it's terrible! I miss my Mac, hopefully a genius can bring it back to life!

Chargers can die. Got a volt meter to see if there's any power coming out of it?

Your battery might be confused. This happened to me a week ago. Stayed at 0%. The solution was to let the machine run the battery dry (the REAL 0%) and it was satisfied it knew the score after that. It then recharged without a problem.

If the LED on the connector doesn't come on (green for charged, amber for charging), either the charger has a problem or the immediate interface circuit in the MacBook.

The former is much more likely than the latter, so it's best if you take both your MacBook and your charger to the Apple Store to find out which it is.

If you've got a second Apple charger or a second MacBook you could easily try for yourself, but I guess you wouldn't have asked if that was the case.

Funny, I've just experienced the exact same problem with my old macbook. Battery showed zero charge, and at first I could run it with the charger plugged in (green light showing). But next time I tried that I got nothing. Pressing the charge indicator button on the battery still gets me a blinking green light -- but nothing else.

I do have another much newer macbook and charger -- but it has a completely different plug-in and won't fit the old macbook. Into the shop tomorrow, I guess.

Looks like the charger has indeed failed as well.

I've got a 2.5 year old MacBook (the first generation, from late 2006), and last month my charger died. I found that if I jiggled it around enough, it would kick on for a little while, but of course that's ridiculous, so I bought another. Depending on how often you use(d) your charger, it could also be that it's just reached the end of its useful lifespan (I used my charger 24/7, since the battery fried; it's since been replaced of course).

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think it's the charger that is faulty - which I certainly hope. I will be trying it out with some other peoples MacBooks today to see just what's wrong and then I will head to the Apple Store.

Thanks again.

if its not the charger, then tell them to exchange the DC-In board connector, it has a fuse and its fried, a 20 minute procedure.

I came across such a problem with my old no-name notebook a while ago..
Female connector soldered onto the little board was broken mechanically giving the male connector some space to move. This resulted in some resistance equalling producing heat, overheating the receptor.
My first fix lasted a few weeks; I now have removed the connector completely and simply soldered two wires onto the board, leading out of the laptop's case. I then cut off the male connector (also smoldered) from the DC-cable and connected the two stubs.
Makes my notebook fairly immobile, as charger will not detatch, but that's okay for me.

I had the problem a few months ago. I was sitting with my computer on and I noticed that my screen kept brightening (I, for some reason, wasn't noticing the dimming) just like when you plug in the charger. Finally I noticed that for some reason the charger was intermittently cutting out. Later in the evening I noticed it happening again so I took out the charger. At first I noticed that the mag block was very hot.I plugged it back in and nothing happened. It would no longer charge. Then I noticed that just below where the wire runs from the MagSafe connector the covering was stripping and looked stretched out. Well, I quickly deduced that it was melting and unplugged it.

I took it to the Apple dealer (no Apple Stores in Ottawa) and they told me to call Apple and get a customer service code to have it replaced. At first the guy on the phone wasn't understanding what I was saying but when I said the cord had melted through he quickly put me on hold and then came back a minute later with a code to give to the people at the store. 4 days later (why they had to ship out for it rather than just get one from the shelf is beyond me), I had a new surge protector and MagSafe connector.

Thanks for all your replies. It was quite simple, my power adapter was dead so I made an appointment at the genius bar on Regents Street and after school I got it replaced. No fee involved so I am happy again. Luckily it wasn't the computer!
