Official 2009 March Madness Thread

Sun Mar 15, 2009 11:17 pm

Well the 2009 NCAA Tournament bids were just announced, with the Louisiville Cardinals taking the Number 1 overall seed.

Who do you see going all the way?

My guess: Final Round:
Louisville 75
UNC 85

Pitt might still have a chance. As good as Louisville has been, you never know how it'll turn out.

I can't help but wonder, who was smoking what when those divisions were created?

Uconn in the west?
Arizona in the south?
Wisconin in the east?
USC in the east or Midwest?

how hard is it to put the schools in divisions according to where the are geographically?
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

The division has nothing to do with where the school is located - its the region of the country where the team will play in its bracket as it moves to Midwest Bracket will play some of their games in Kansas City while teams in the West will play in Boise and Portland. And the bracket a team is selected to play in is based on its overall ranking (For example, Louisville will play ythe 64th or 65th ranked team, depending on who wins that game). It seems complicated but it makes sense.

The selection committee will try and protect 1-4 seeds and try to get them as close to home as possible. Other than that....they don't care about, where you go you go. It really is difficult enough to make the bracket without trying to get everyone close to home. For all intents and purposes, the title of the brackets are irrelevant for the teams they contain. Even more so now with the 'pod' system for the first and second rounds. For instance, the #1 sees in the east and midwest will both first play in Dayton. Part of the west bracket will be played in Philadelphia. This system was designed to have teams play closer to home, but that is only a priority for the top 4 seeds.

Thought I'd plug in the pick'em I made for the site. Last year we had quite a few people sign up. Hopefully we get lots of people as well.

I have it as Uconn and Pitt at the end with UConn winning.

Edited to fix the link

I'm picking Memphis to win it all.

And congrats to the state of Ohio! Five of our teams made the tournament: Ohio State, Cleveland State, Akron, Dayton and Xavier. Good showing for the Buckeye state.

The only selection I had trouble with was Arizona at 19-13, with a terrible road record, and they didn't win anything in the PAC-10. They should not have made the dance.

Submitted my bracket for the A.net group. Unfortunately I'm better at picking upsets in football than I am in basketball. Guess we'll see how this goes.

I've got Memphs v. UNC in the finals, with Memphis winning. They're gonna play with a chip on their shoulder, after losing a toughie last year, and not getting a #1 seed, despite having the best record in the nation this year.

I agree with you there, no way an at-large team should have under 20 wins, especially when there are legitimate teams with a better RPI and more wins preparing for the NIT. Additionally, the Big Ten with 7 teams? There is just no way that they should get as many teams as the Big East and the ACC, Wisconsin should not have made the dance. My final complaints is that only 4 non "BCS" schools got an at-large bid. This number has been dropping pretty much every year and before we know it the only recourse that Mid-majors will have is to win their conference tournament. That is bad for college basketball. I think the "committee" needs to go straight best remaining RPI for the at-large bids. None of the "whole body of work" nonsense, it is to subjective and places conference and school recognition over a more objective (albeit not perfect) computer ranking.

How do you reconcile those 2 comments together?

It's been dropping recently since the huge year the MVC had a few years ago. It goes in cycles, I don't see why this would be down permanently.

- I really can not argue with that but THREE Big East teams as Number One Seeds? I watched my fair share of college hoops this year (notice I typed "watched" and not listened? I usually will turn the volume down unless they are really good broadcasters) but really did not think they were that strong a conference. I knew Louisville was doing well (I live just 90 miles north of Louisville) but still, three teams from the same conference as number ones?

Looking at it again, Wisconsin probably would make it in, but San Diego State and Creighton should take out Arizona and Maryland respectively, on a straight RPI basis. (I might have missed another at-large with a lower RPI than Wisconsin, if I did my bad).

So the BYU - Texas A&M game was the only game I didn't get right today. 15 out of 16 isn't too bad though.  Smile Tied for first in the A.net bracket.  biggrin  (that won't last, I'm sure)

Hope I'm right with my upset predictions again tomorrow.
