St. Patrick's Day-how Did/will You Celebrate?

Mon Mar 16, 2009 12:52 am

Alot of countries held their celebrations this past weekend as there is no official holiday on the 17th like there is here.

So what did/will you do for Paddy's?

Eating some kind of chicken burrito at Baja Fresh, hopefully. Even though I am half Irish, I don't really get into the whole green beer and corned beef and cabbage and all that.

Are there any good Irish pubs/restaurants in San Francisco?

About a week premature, but I went to a Flogging Molly show in Boston this past Tuesday. Sadly, it is another 2 months before I turn 21, so no Guinness for me.

Wait, it's St. Patrick's Day weekend and St. Paddy's day is Tuesday?

There was a time when I would have had it all planned out so I could be in my seat at the Blarney drinking and then being dragged home. But now I don't (didn't) even realize it was here.

Sad in some ways, much healthier though!

Few me, I'll be waring green and getting drunk somewhere. Probably with KevinL1011. I am here in LA for the week and wont be able to cook some corned beef and cabbage. Otherwise I'd make some of that and have Murphy's and or Jamesons.

Alas, being a lone Irishman (50% Irishman, anyway) here in Lund, as in not knowing any other Irish people here, it's difficult to convince friends to get sloshed on a Tuesday. Normally, I suppose that people wouldn't mind, middle-of-the-week drinking usually isn't a problem, but people have tests and paper deadlines. I don't, however. Hell, I even have a day off on Wednesday... I just need to find some people...

Cheers

Still recovering from my last St. Patrick's (and my birthday) hangover...

So pretty much doing nothing this time around, except a family dinner.

Since St. Paddy's Day fell on a Tuesday this year (damn leap year last year), I will be unfortunately at work between 5-10. It sucks, because I start late enough I can go have a couple cold ones, but UPS prohibits even drinking mildly before shift, and 10PM on a Tuesday? School, work and other stuff like that.

I will celebrate a (late) St. Patrick's Day this weekend at my favorite Irish Pub, The Donegal. For all the Calgarians who know, The Donegal is on 37th St. just north of 17th Ave. SW, near Manning High School.

Cheers,
Nik

Most of us here in the old sod will just go to the nearest parade and enjoy it whilst getting sloshed.

I'll go to a pub with some friends in the city center. It will be packed as usual, especially on Grafton. I won't see the parade, though. It's too ealry Big grin

Not me, I did my sloshing at the weekend, plus I have school on Wednesday.

I'll go watch the parade in town (Ennis) starting with the Ennis Gospel Choir at 10:30 and do some photography. Fun fun fun.

Brave man! Tried doing that last November when I was in a play and we had a drink (or more) after each show. Very tiring!

I'll be at work, but on Sunday I went and watched the Milwaukee Bucks (hell yeah!) beat the Boston Celtics 86-77. Glad nobody from Boston is whining over that. Both teams have players injured and it was a good game all the way.

Well, that was a nice Paddy's day! Lots of people in the streets, bands playing and everything. I had a nice day with my friends and after the whole afternoon and evening drinking Guinness and green-coloured lager, I'm back home!

Because tomorrow, back to work... if I don't call in sick Big grin

I don't celebrate because I am not Irish.
It's funny how everyone in the UK rants on about St Patricks Day, most of them are not even frigging Irish. Ask them when St Georges Day is and no-one knows...

Dumb Brits. I will celebrate St Georges Day by hanging flags everywhere then probably get arrested by the PC Brigade... it's all bullsh*t!

But one has to have a culture to celebrate it LOL...  duck

When I was growing up in West London they never even mentioned St Georges Day where as St Patricks Day has always been celebrated. Only recently has England decided to create a St Georges Day and it hsnt quite taken off .

And what do people eat on St Georges Day ?? That great British dish ....Curry lol...

I worked on school work and then went to the gym, heated up some leftovers and ended the evening with some Häagen Dazs Dulce de Leche.

Now off to bed at 12:50am.

Slightly off-topic, but people who posted to this thread may know the answers.

During Jay Leno's show on St. Patrick's Day, the band - several times - played a few bars of "Scotland the Brave" to punctuate the sketches / punchlines related to St. Patrick's Day.

So why would "Scotland the Brave" be associated with St. Patrick's day ?

Is the same tune also used for a popular Irish song ?

Do the Scots also celebrate St. Patrick's Day ?

These are genuine questions - I am not trying to be sarcastic or rhetorical.

Thanks in advance for answers.

Scotland is not Ireland and this type of thing would annoy me. The two share similarities in landscape and some Celtic traditions but other than that there is alot to seperate the two. They shouldn't be grouped together especially on St. Patrick's Day - a festival that has nothing whatsoever to do with Scotland.

Celebrations for Paddy's in Scotland are fairly small. Glasgow only started St. Patrick's Day parades a few years back.
