If, as they say, it's top speed is 70 km/h, I doubt very much if it will be sold here.

But you are right that it looks real cool. I would love to drive one. MEL, you planning on getting one ?

I think it's enough speed driving inside a city. Really could accomplish some daily works. AFAIK Nano will cost around $2000.

Why so much? When you do the conversion $2000 isn't as many Euros.
Is the cost of importing one TataNano unit so high to make such a price difference?

I like the design. I find it's a very cute little car.

According to wikipedia, top speed is 120 km/h (75 MPH).

The environmentalist crying about it is basically racism IMO, really ugly stuff. Read about these clowns in today's NYT:

India's major cities are already reeling from the crush of traffic congestion and suffocating from the pollutants created by the traffic. The availability of an inexpensive personal vehicle, while empowering many to procure one for the first time, will make things a lot worse. I don't understand where the "racism" is in that argument.

It's racist to suggest Indians have no personal right to a 600cc car, while the average man and woman in this country has a 3,000cc car or two. That was the thrust of the NYT article. The best response to this was from Mr. Tata himself: He said he found it "interesting" that people who already own cars, and drive them, would condemn Indians for doing the same thing, as if they do not even have 1/5 of the human rights that educated western environmentalists have.

As to air pollution in Indian cities, the Nano is so clean that it will probably improve air quality in India, not harm it. The real concern is about greenhouse gases, which is where global equity comes in.

Congrats to Ratan tata & his team.

Indeed, big congratulations to Tata Motors and the Indian auto industry! Hope the Nano will prompt the Indian government to upgrade their infrastructure.

While this is no doubt a great achievement, let's not kid ourselves: more cars will lead to more congestion and pollution and what not. For a developing country with a huge population base and an ever ballooning middle class, the environmental problems resulting from more cars are not to be dismissed or slighted. It's true that we(developng countries) must not repeat the dirty and unsustainable paths set by the current industrialized countries, for our own good if nothing else.

I am big fan of the electrification of vehicles. To my great joy, in my country, China, domestic auto makers (Chery and BYD) have already rolled out mass production models of long range all electric and plug-in hybrid cars. The governement is considering giving huge subsidies(as much as 8000 USD/car I heard) to consumers if they purchase electric or hybrid models. I see this development a very good sign, but further upgrades in the electricity and road infrastructure must be put into place before electric and plug-in hybrids can turn into a roaring success.

Here is piece I found on the Chery all electric model:
http://www.greencarcongress.com/2009/02/chery-launches.html

A couple of videos about the BYD, and this car is said to have a 4-star equivalent crash rating.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XRlCmT37FE

I wish the Nano great success, but I believe the long term solution is better roads and electrification.

That car is the PERFECT size for Bermuda...but will our government consider them? Highly unlikely, as they lack the 'cool factor' that the oversized behemoths that currently are being driven here.....
Come on, the island is 20 miles long and a mile wide at its widest point....the roads are narrow and very winding....do we really need SUVs? um...no.

I want one too!  praise  It's sooo CUTE! A real People's Car ( 'Volkswagen'  Wink )

To clarify, The Indian Nano is priced at $2500 and will only do 70KMPH, which is plenty for city roads. The Export model Nano Europa is priced higher: it has more creature comforts and meets EU specs. It should do a max of 145KMPH.

As for pollution complainers, the car does 67 mpg and will replace all those 2-stroke vehicles that foul the air.

The Nano will be modified for European driving conditions and to meet Euro safety standards.

Big version: Width: 660 Height: 440 File size: 22kb
2009 Tata Nano

"For Europe (and potentially for the United States if the car makes it to our shores), the Nano Europa (when it arrives in 2011) will have a bigger, 934-cc, 60-hp three-cylinder engine and have a top speed of 95 mph, a five-speed automatic, a wider track, disc brakes, ABS, stability control, improved driving dynamics and ride, better equipment and a finished interior, along with driver and passenger airbags. It will also be slightly longer and comply with all safety and crash-test standards, while still being the cheapest car in the world at less than $ 5,000."

Fugly...but still a cool car though. Wonder when Jeremy and Co. will get it on Top Gear.

But is this what India really needs now? The roads are already overcrowded and polluted...now imagine a few million of these on the road. And where is the space to park? *shudder*  boggled

If the Nano helps to improve safety and decrease the number of traffic deaths, that's a good thing.

ive seen some amazing videos of smart cars converted to RWD powered by mid mounted motorbike engines and im guessing soon we will see similar setups with these tata's. onsidering thier already RWD and very cheap they could make for a very fun little project drag car. If they come to Australia i know what my next project will be

It's the same cause why an E-Class Mercedes sells for US$ 30.000 in the US while the exact samle model won't be available for less than € 40.0000 on the german market! It's the market that dictates the price. Always squeeze out the max you can get.

I hope cities like Bangalore build roads for this thing! They're clogged already, and that's with scooters, autos, buses, and a few cars! I have a feeling that while many people may buy a Nano, they'll find that taking transit is easier in the pocketbook and mind...where the hell are you even going to park so many cars in the city?

New Delhi - Of course I will get there to buy my Nano. Big grin
Karachi - Watching a cricket game.
Shiraz - I always wanted to visit Shiraz. It's beautiful city to visit.
Baghdad - To see what's going on there.
Damascus - Visiting old cultural and religion monuments
Adana - Nothing special.
Alanya - Getting prepared for Antalya.
Antalya - Ahh... beautiful city to spend some days.  Smile
Izmir - Nothing special though. On my way to Istanbul.
Istanbul - Awesome city. Been there before, also I have some cousins. Great opportunity to visit and to show them my Nano. Big grin
Edirne - It's a city near Turkish - Bulgarian border.
Sofia - Near to my hometown. Tired... need to eat something and drink some coffee.
Skopje - Almost arrived. 80km far away Pristina.
Pristina - Home sweet home. Finally arrived. Car almost broken down. Big grin

I find this route more attractive than ex-Soviet countries.

The E-class starts at more than $50k here. The only reason the Nano would have to be so expensive here is that it will have more than just some seats and a steering wheel. Safety features as well as an improved emissions system will have to be added.
