Thoughts About The Honda Jazz

Mon Mar 23, 2009 4:43 pm

Has anyone ever driven one of these? We're thinking of buying one, about 4 years old, and I'd like to sound the water...
It comes recommended from a friend of my wife. I know it's not the fastest / most sporty car out there, but what we're looking for at the moment are utility (with a baby on the way space is important) and economy, along with reliability. what do you guys think?

Well it's a Honda so it's bound to be reliable...

My family has a Honda Fit, the Canadian version of the Jazz. It is a very versitile car, and i would recomend it to anyone. The only thing i dont like is driving on the highway, or anything over 110km/h. it really doesnt like going that fast. It has tons of room, more than our old station wagon actually, and it is even kinda fun to drive.

Cheers

I agree with Flyboyseven above. I drive my mom's Jazz whenever I'm in Norway and it's a nice little car. Very roomy for it's size and comfortable to drive. However, it's geared such that it has high RPMs at high speeds. I was going only 80kmh today in 5th gear and was around 2500rpm if I remember correctly

I've never drive a Jazz, but that's exactly what my Civic runs at. It's at 2500 RPM in 5th gear at 50 MPH. The times I get up to 80 MPH, it's pushing 4000 RPM.

Oh how I wish for a 6th gear....

My friends mum has one, they give a smooth ride and are surprisingly spacious, I think they are pretty decent and certainly beat the crap out of the FR-V!

A good friend of mine is now on her 3rd Jazz, and loves them.

She leases them through her employer (NHS) and typically keeps them for 4 years, and apart from routine servicing has never had cause to visit the dealer.
Statistically, people who have had the most birthdays tend to live the longest.

Interesting...the gearing must be different in different generations of the Civic. Mine's a '98 EX and runs at 2100r/min at 50mph and about 3400 at 80mph.

What year is yours?

Holy crap! My Impreza does around 3400 RPM.

Oh, me too. I think instead of getting 27 MPG, I'd probably get 30 doing 80. A serious increase in overall fuel mileage on a long trip - almost another 50 miles per tank for me.

The Jazz is a Honda so in that sense, its a good car.

It's also the cheapest and poorest quality car in the Honda Range.

But still a good car none the less.

Our 97 EX sedan is similar and gets about 36 mpg at 80, 37-38 mpg if you slow down to 70 mph.

It's a 2002 EX, 1.7L 127HP 5-speed manual transmission. The manuals always seem to run at higher RPM's, even though they have an extra gear.

I get about 34-36 MPG on long trips where I'm typically driving between 70 and 80 MPH. I actually hit 37 MPG on a few tanks on a cross-country drive, and my speed was probably averaging around 75. I can only imagine what I'd get MPG-wise if I had a 6th gear....

The way my Civic is geared, at 2500 RPM, you'll be at the following speeds (by gear):

2nd - 20 MPH
3rd - 30 MPH
4th - 40 MPH
5th - 50 MPH

I always found that interesting, the way that works out.

I don't know what speed I'm at in 1st....too low to tell accurately...probably somewhere around 12 MPH.

I have a Honda jazz and it's a great car. Can't say much about reliability, since I have very few miles on it despite being 3 years old, but Honda service is great nonetheless. It is very spacious for its size and easy to handle around town but it can be a bit gutless when loaded heavy or uphill. That said, I have also been able to do long stretches at 160 km/h with three people on board, but when doing that mileage does suffer a bit...

BTW, I went to the Boston auto show a few months ago, just to check out the fancy machines and without any intention of buying a new car, but the vehicle that impressed me the most was the 2nd-generation (current) Honda Jazz (Fit). If I had the money and my car was a bit more used I would consider trading it in for the new model.

I have... Its not german  Wink

Seriously, though, it is said to be a good car, although some voices claim that the 2nd edition is not as innovative as the first ever Honda Jazz...

I've test-driven the 2nd-generation Honda Fit (as the Jazz is known in North America, eastern Asia and South America) and even with the five-speed automatic, the Fit has pretty good acceleration up to around 120 km/h (73 mph). Ride quality is not bad, and you can't beat the amazing interior flexibility of the Fit/Jazz, which shames most multi-activity vehicles sold in Europe!

So, the Jazz is basically the same car we call the "Honda Fit" in the States?

AFAIK it IS the same car

So for cargo space, could I fit more in the back (with the back seat down) then in my 4 DR 98 Civic EX?

..I loved the look of the Fit when they startedf pushing it last year but if I am gonig to get a new car it has to have at least slightly more cargo space, so I can fit a reasonably sized bookshelf or some such thing when I am schlepping things back and forth!

Yesterday we put down the deposit on it... 53 reg (2nd half of 2003), no rust, light green, 40,000 miles on it, for £3995. We're picking it up from the dealer on the 1st April (no joke!)

Congratulations. It is a great price for such a nifty little car, I am sure you will be very happy with it. Light green is a very cool color, as well, too bad it is so hard to get.

I had the pleasure of driving this fine car 2 weeks ago from downtown Chicago to the far suburbs. Its not bad if you are downtown, anywhere else and this car is worthless. The acceleration for the speed of the Chicago interstate traffic flow is downright dangerous. Im not expecting it to drag race but for gods sake when you hit the gas at 70mph nothing happens.
