Kathmandu, Lukla & Everest Base Camp Meet?

Sat Mar 28, 2009 6:48 am

May sound a bit bizaar, but hear me out.

Following the success of the Iceland and Prague meets I attended a couple of years ago, and the Kiev/Chernobyl meets I couldn't get to (plus the others I've forgot to mention), how about this trip for the more adventurous amonst us?

Me, Ray (Iceland, Prague, LHR meets) and a couple of other non-A.Net mates are planning a trek to Everest Base Camp next year (possibly Spring, but could be Autumn). The trip is with a specialist holiday company that one of the party has travelled with before and can vouch for the quality of service (guides, etc.).

The trip is a trek, and whereas no special skills are required (climbing, etc.), it is a long trek (16 days), therefore one needs to be reasonably fit, particularly with regards endurance and stamina. But it is within the capabilities of most able-bodied persons.

The entire trip London-London is 21 days. Quite a long time to get out of work, I agree, but the price is the best bit. £1349 for the Spring trip (£1749 for Autumn).

Of course, trekking is not everyone's cup of tea, so make your own arrangements and make it a Kathmandu/Lukla meet!

Rather than cut and paste the info from the travel companies website, I'll post the link. For those with even the tiniest interest, be sure to click on all the tabs along the top!

And for the aviation nuts in us all, when are you likely to fly Yeti Airlines to Lukla?

Looks like an awesome trip. 21 days is a bit to long for me to take off or I've be right there.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

Let me be the first to make the obvious joke:

You're on a forum with aviation geeks, why not just take a helicopter.

It's an option, but at what cost?  Wow!

This is a dream trip. I would certainly be happy to join the trek but I am not sure of my financial sitution with the credit crunch.
I am hit but things can change for the better from now to next year. I am working on it.  Smile
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

Sean, I'm seriously up for doing this! The only problem I can see is that right now I don't have a job and only one more installment of my student loan to come, so raising that kind of money within a year could be a slight issue, but I'll have a talk to my parents if in doubt, and start begging!  silly

Had a very good look on the site and it does look great, a mate who was on my Uni course also did this (he was in his 40s then) and absolutely loved it; he never mentioned a price and I always assumed it was about double what they are charging. Including return flights on Gulf Air from London is even better, plus the Lukla flight - although I wonder if you can also add extra days, as I wouldn't mind also spending a week or so flying through and exploring some other bits of Nepal.

I think this would be an amazing trip, and I'd love to join you! Big grin

Do be careful. I had a friend who did this trip and he got serious altitude sickness well before even getting to Base Camp.

He got a free (emergency) ride on a helicopter though and he doesn't even like aviation. What a waste!  Yeah sure
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

It'd be great if you could make it Dan. Start saving those pennies!

When there's any news, I'll be sure to pass it on. We are going to meet up over the next week or so and get some ideas on definate numbers/best time to travel, etc. If you have anything to add, give me a shout.
