I Have A New Laptop

Tue Mar 31, 2009 4:11 pm

Up-front admission - this thread is entirely self-gloss, so feel free to ignore it if that isn't your thing.

My old laptop had been slowly breaking down for a while now, so I finally took the plunge and bought a new one, an HP Pavilion dv7. And it's a really nice machine:
- Intel Core(2) Duo, 2.4 GHz
- 500 GB hard drive
- 4 GB RAM
- 1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4560 graphics card
- Windows Vista, 64-bit
- 17.3" screen

Not only that, but between the $300-off "deal of the week" thing HP was running on the computer, and my dad's discount as a former HP employee, I probably saved about $450 to $500 (not counting the $150 instant rebate they were giving on any laptop purchased on hp.com). The computer itself (not including tax or the copy of Microsoft Office I bought separately) was less than $900. My only complaint is that it's too big to fit in my former laptop bag. I didn't realize just how big 17.3 inches is!

Good deal. Although, the only problem with the 17 inch laptops is that it's really more of a "do things at home" system, than a road system. The specs are quite good, though. Have you tested the capabilities of the graphics card yet?

Excellent purchase! It never ceases to frustrate me how quickly computers progress with hardware and drop in price. I have a Dell "gaming" laptop that I paid nearly 1000 dollars more for than you did with that system, and it would easily be burned by your HP in every game I'd care to play. I've only had it for a year!  Sad If only I could lease a laptop like a car, and turn it in every year for a new one...

You did an excellent choice. Your laptop's specs are stunning.

N'ah I think it's great deal. If I'll purchase a laptop sometimes I'd take 17''.

Not to the limits yet. My former laptop had a really cruddy graphics card that couldn't run much of anything, so I'm going to start with some of the older (and cheaper!) games that I couldn't run on the old one. Oblivion (aka Elder Scrolls IV) runs fine on the "high quality" setting. Portal also looks great. At some point I'll probably buy Crysis, since from what I've heard that one will push any system to its limits.

That is a nice buy. Damn less than $900?! That is so cheap compared to wait I paid to build my last system.

What's your impression of Vista? Does it run well on your machine? I only ask because it runs like bloatware on my Core 2 system and I'm wondering if it's just me.

Enjoy your new PC!

Maybe the manufacture's stuff? Mine was exactly the same. Absolutely full of crap and the laptop had so much to start it took forever for Firefox to open. I wiped it (as they partioned it in half - I HATE that, no-one needs half the drive for Vista) and it's running fabulously.

Maybe back it up and try that? Make sure you have the drivers on hand, CD or otherwise - safe yourself the hassle up front.

Good luck with it!
