Self Gloss: I Am Getting A Promotion!

Wed Apr 01, 2009 3:18 am

Well, just over 3 months into my job as a housekeeper at an assisted living place, and the general manager and resident services manager asked me if I wanted to become a resident assistant! I think I am definitely going to go ahead and take it. Everyone likes me there, and I think this job has higher pay. Heck, at least it's something that actually requires a high school diploma unlike the housekeeper position I have now.

Eh, with this economy, any job is better than no job and wellfare... Besides, these jobs are in high demand anyway...

Hey, like my signature says, it really is sunny in Philadelphia!!!!!

YAY!!!

A promotion deserves a raise! Make sure you approach it that way and ask how much of raise you'll receive along with the additional responsibilities. Don't be shy about asking about the pay increase!

Excellent! It goes to show what hard work and dedication will bring you. And I'm glad to see the way you think: that a job beats no job.

I think I remember hearing that the RAs get like $10 an hour to start, but yeah, I would imagine that the pay for something like that would be higher than what I currently make as a housekeeper. I have to lift people, get them dressed, showered, etc... We have some big guys, too. They do have one other guy who is a resident assistant, but now they'll likely be getting another one!  Smile

Everyone is feeling the crunch from this economy. Many jobs are not available anymore from all the layoffs. I did an internship last summer with the City of Philadelphia, and with the recession and Philly's financial problems, I don't think that opportunity will come back unfortunately. So, I have to keep other options open. I am trying to do what I can so that I am not in that statistic of almost 1 in every 10 people looking for a job...

Not to mention, with my college degrees and an eventual masters degree, maybe I could find something in corporate. I'm still going to look for something in my field, but this could be something to fall back on. Who knows... Right?

Good for you! I know this isn't your dream career, but at least you are appreciated for what you do...and you have a good attitude about it, so you deserve good things to happen at work.

I know how tough this is. My father and I have to do this daily for my mother (me only on weekends) and it is not a fun job. You are doing amazing work, and while it doesn't have the prestige of other jobs, it is far more important than what most of us do in our careers. Whatever the secular alternative to Bless You is, I say that!

Seconded! Way to go - you have a great work ethic and that job that's just perfect for your skills will make itself known to you one day and you'll have excellent habits and attitude all waiting to make you successful.
But that was when I ruled the world

I second that, Steeler83, good for you! Believe me, I know how hard it is not finding anything in your studied field. I have a two-year associate in travel-tourism business administration, and the best position I'm able to get right now is front desk at crappy hotels (Days Inn, Comfort Inn, etc.). I'm lucky I can get $8 an hour.
It's a Great Day for Hockey!

UGH!! When my internship ended and I had to find something else, I went on an application spre back in September, and I initially found work as a housekeeper at a Marriott just up the highway from where I live. I worked at $8.25 an hour and averaged about 30 hours a week. Not too bad. Then the economy just took a dump, and it was revealed that we were in a recession since December. Bookings went into freefall, and my pay check got lighter and lighter.

My one coworker told me about the assisted living place that is almost literally across the street from where I live. He told me they were hiring housekeepers at higher pay. He applied there and told me he got the job, and that he would get me an application. I never got one, so I applied in person, heard back within 2 weeks to come in for an interview. It turned out that my coworker lied about all of that, and I was hired right there on the spot!

It was supposed to be another part time job in addition to the hotel up the street, but my immediate supervisor wanted me to work full time after another employee of his/coworker of mine caused him some problems. I went full time, then they made me a driver to transport residents back and forth between dr appointments and the like, and now they want me to work resident services!!!

That's unfortunate for you tho. I empathise with that. For many of us, that's all that we can seem to get given this ever sputtering economy. You know, at least you're not getting laid off!!! KNOCK ON WOOD!!!

Heck, we do what we can do: work extremely hard, build a good name for ourselves so that hopefully when the time comes an advancement opportunity will present itself, you'll be recognized for it. Hang in there USPIT10L, and thanks for your input and remarks!  Smile

Good things should come your way eventually as well, mate!
