2010 GMC Terrain Launched @ NY Auto Show -Aztek 2?

Tue Apr 07, 2009 6:32 am

General Motors has too little cash and simply too many sales divisions, and the result is (again) too much "badge engineering".

2010 GMC Terrain

The 2010 GMC Terrain doesn't suffer badge engineering to the degree that its predecessor, the now-discontinued Pontiac Torrent, but it's close. Based on the new generation Chevrolet Equinox, the Terrain will come with slightly more standard equipment than the new Equinox, is available in front wheel drive or all-wheel drive with either an inline 4 cylinder or V-6 configurations, and carrying a pricetag from from the low to the upper $20K USD.

2010 GMC Terrain

Underneath it all, the Terrain will be similar to the Chevy Equinox's spec sheet: a standard 2.4-liter Ecotec gas direct-injection four cylinder or an optional 3.0-liter gas direct-injection V-6, with fuel economy ranging up to 30 mpg highway with the Ecotec four cylinder. That's amazing fuel economy for a 2 ton CUV.

2010 GMC Terrain interior

To be blunt, the styling of the Terrain is, at best, questionable. The square fender openings that look so muscular and appropriate on the much larger GMC Acadia suddently look cartoon-ish, along the lines of what Jeep did with their Patriot and Compass fenders. And the huge dripping in chrome grille is as over the top as the Lincoln MKS grille to me. One thing is certain: When the new Terrain replaces the Torrent in Pontiac/Buick/GMC dealers this summer, will buyers look at the Terrain and think it's the reincarnation of late, unloved Pontiac Aztek?

Another SUV that makes me feel like I've seen it a thousand times already.

But that's because I have.

Ah, my tax dollars at work.

Seriously...is this a joke? It's not funny. My first thought when I saw the exterior was that this is exactly what the 2010 Family Truckster would look like.

What a kludge.

That grill is ugly as sin, but other than that it's not bad looking. Certainly a lot better than the Aztek. The interior looks nice too - I just hope they don't go for cheap materials in it.

It's not a bad showing, but you can tell it's another example of rebadging. I'm not sure whether that's beneficial to GM in the long run.

Yeah really. Although I was surprised by the interior. I kinda like it. In a I-could-settle-with-it type way.

I just hope they use better materials than those cheap recycled plastics they've put in every other one of their cars. But for $20k? Not gonna happen. Queue the cardboard seats and Styrofoam dash please  Yeah sure

checkmark  Ditto. Ghastly like all the other ones out there; well, the American and Asian ones at least

Kinda cool.

Wonder who'll build it after GM goes under?

What GM needs is to bring the new Corsa, Cruze, and Insignia to the North American marketplace ASAP, get some clean-burning turbo-diesel engines over here (to compete with the VW TDI variants) and to deliver the Volt before everyone that really wants a high-efficiency sedan buys either a Insight or a Pruis.

Those Avalanche-esque fender flares seem to have the opposite effect to what was intended. They make the wheels/tires seem small, and they (visually) give the car a narrow, top-heavy stance. They make the wheels seem about two sizes too small for the car.

The lights over the exhaust pipes are a very odd touch.

The roof rack rails will be too short for many pieces of cargo. Kayaks, canoes, and certain luggage boxes, for example.

I like how the rear glass extends downward in the middle. If you can indeed see through the lower part around the rear wiper, it seems like a smart way to increase rearward visibility.

Overall, this seems to be another case of the designers slapping on too many tacky design touches (a la Aztek and Avalanche), and overpowering what might otherwise have been a good, clean concept.

Another SUV? Do they ever learn anything? So much for the "permanent shift towards smaller cars." Gas is going to go up again (and is on the rise as I speak), and GM will [again] regret not developing more small cars when they had ample opportunities to do so. They ought to take a look at what Ford is doing and follow suit. Ford will survive and be stronger than ever with a fantastic portfolio (the new Fiesta, Focus, etc). GM is going to die very quickly if they keep putting out this garbage.
I want my tax money back. They shouldn't have gotten any of it in the first place.  thumbsdown

In a nutshell, the GMC Terrain falls in the small SUV/CUV category and would compete w/vehicles like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V & Toyota RAV4. So we're not necessarily talking about a hulky, bulky vehicle here.

Even back when gas was at $4/gallon, I've known at least 2 people that replaced their old Toyota Corollas with these types of vehicles (one for a RAV4, the other for a Mitsubishi Outlander(?)) so the market does indeed exist.

Long story short, sales of small SUVs could increase at the expense of large SUVs should gas prices skyrocket again.

Love the look, much nicer than the Equinox. Great interior.

I don't see how it's close at all. They don't share any body panels. This is an excellent example of badge-engineering done right.

The rear 3/4 shot is pretty bad. From the front it doesn't look too bad, the interior looks awesome!

Another SUV...............Stupid Useless Vehicle. I guess no one remembers that gas was over $4USD a gallon about 6-8months ago. I vowed then to let mpg be my deciding factor in my next auto purchase. 30mpg just doesn't even get me to look at this.

They're only stupid if their capabilities are never needed and/or never used.

For someone who needs that number of seats or cargo room, and also needs AWD, it's neither stupid or useless.
