Obama Is In Iraq

Tue Apr 07, 2009 1:52 pm

Obama has made an unscheduled stop in Baghdad.

Interesting addition to his trip.

I figured this might happen. Turkey is right there...and it sort of plays into his last stop on his Europe tour.

Question though:

On this flight, I assume there are press affiliates on board of AF1 and possibly other planes that are flying the press.

1. Does anyone know what aircraft the press are flying on besides AF1, or if the press was on AF1 at all? IF there is a press plane, does it get the same security into Iraq as AF1 and notifications prior to departure? I assume somewhat soon, as fuel needs to be considered.

2. It seems that one CNN correspondent said that when they departed Turkey, the official schedule said they were flying back to DC, however, the plane turned SE and headed to Iraq. At what point in time does one alert the press that the President is going to Iraq and what is protocol for reporters if they are onboard AF1 or the press plane?

When they were in London, there was a chartered UA 777 at Stansted...

The press plane may not go to Iraq with the President. If it did, I doubt that they would tell any of the passengers, at least before takeoff.

When he lands, preferably after he takes off, but that would be next to impossible to pull off.

I have no way of knowing. In fact this is a WAG but probably they will file their reports on the outgoing flight.

If I remember correctly (and I'm recalling Bush's suprise Thanksgiving visit to Iraq)...any members of the press that go, have their phones temporaily confiscated, and are not allowed to file any type of story until given the okay by the Secret Service. It seems as though things are being done slightly differently now.

Well done President Obama! Visiting your troops in Iraq is a very good move. A big morale booster too.
