Bush Shoe Thrower's Sentence Reduced

Tue Apr 07, 2009 5:14 pm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7988035.stm

Muntadar al-Zaidi's sentence has been reduced to just one year following an appeal which saw his charges changed from assault to insulting a foreign leader.

Excellent news.

A year inside for throwing a shoe at someone (and missing them) is still pretty harsh.

Well, if the shoe fits.

Seriously, I don't think it is too harsh. True, he's being used as an example to future shoe tossers. If he got away with it, no head of state would be safe from boots, loafers, or even the lowly flip flop.

I know you don't like Bush, neither do I, but he was the POTUS.

Not sure, but I imagine he got something a stern ticking off from the village bobby followed by being grounded for a week by his parents.

I thought this would happen. It was an unpopular move when the sentance was passed and was very excessive IMHO.

Im glad he will be out soon . Its not as if he threw a bomb at Mr Bush.

His punishment will probably be no worse than what I described though. At a push he may get fined, or perhaps forced to run a youth centre for a couple of weeks or something equally flakey.

Regardless, they are making it a trial issue:

The reduction to one year will allow a release on parole in a few months

Why? Because he tossed the shoe at Bush?

Look, you know I hate Bush as much as you, but that is still no excuse to disresct the office.

Why is that hard for all of you ShoeTosser apologists to grasp?

It is a question of the balance. Such a behaviour of course cannot be accepted. But it at the other hand should not be treated as a heavy crime. It is a serious offence, which would mean, in most countries, a sentence of a heavy financial fine or one, two or three months imprisonment.

Yeah I wanna if its 'disrespecting the office' in one case and 'freedom of expression' in the other.

So the British case hearing has been delayed to June 4th. Is the guy still in jail?? Doubt he was tortured as the Iraqi claimed.

Interesting coincidence, quoting from the link provided:

The court's legal advisor also told magistrates that 4 June would be a "sensitive date".

On 4 June 1989 several hundred civilians protesting in Tiananmen Square, in Beijing, were shot dead by the Chinese army.

And I agree, it wasn't right. However, I'm not sure what the crime would be if it were in the U.S. Assault? You can hardly call it a "deadly weapon."

I don't hate Bush (don't like him either) but think the whole sentence is stupid. He should be released with a time served and a conviction on his record. I doubt Bush wants the guy in prison. He found it kind of funny. And shoes and feet may be insulting in Islam, but they aren't to a Texan.

How Bush reacted in fact was splendid and admirable. Whenever I generally dislike(d) him, this time I found him applaudable.
