Tony Blair Criticises Pope

Wed Apr 08, 2009 10:18 am

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/faith/article6055696.ece

Tony Blair has publically criticised the Pope for his stance on homosexuality, saying he is out of touch with modern Catholics.

Regardless of what the Pope thinks, I find it amazing that Tony Blair converted to Catholicism only recently yet sees fit to criticise the pope in public. Seems somewhat disrespectful and silly, given that the church and the Pope's views on the matter should have been very well known to him before he joined them, not to mention the concept of Papal infallability etc.

Good grief. Of course there are bound to be problems when two sets of infallibilities cross.  angel

Rumour has it that when His Tonyness paid his weekly visits to the Queen to advise her on parliamentary matters (the Prime Minister of England is a servant of the Queen and not, as many people believe, the Head of State), towards the end the Queen had to wait for him and then lick his shoes.

It sure is, but he's not even Prime Minister anymore - it really is time he went away and stopped interfering.

Heaven forbid that someone actually stand up to the Pope. If I declared myself God's gift to man, you'd all laugh at me. But when the Pope says the same thing he gets listened to.

Pope or no pope, he's got two balls, same as I do. And unlike him, I use mine. And I reserve the right to disagree most strenuously with him when he says things that cause harm. His dogmatic rejection of condoms, the most effective HIV-prevention strategy known, his dogmatic rejection of homosexuality that has hurt so many kids...

Did you know that 30% of teenage suicides are LGBT youth? If 3% of the population is LGBT then that makes LGBT kids TEN TIMES more likely to commit suicide.

Yet if the family is either accepting or celebratory of their kid's sexuality, then the risk reduces to the same as it does for a heterosexual kid.

If the Pope would like to discuss family values, then I'd like him to visit us at the Society for Adolescent Medicine. We have some concerns we'd like to address with him.

Yes, but don't you think it's rather stupid becoming a Catholic late in life in full knowledge of everything involved and then start criticising?

Sure, but if you converted to Catholicism and then did so then I would consider you rather foolish, as that is precisely what Mr Blair has done.

Yeah, I don't get why he converted. Except maybe to make a point.

That's like the pot calling the kettle black ain't it.

I'd like to hear the pope respond with 'and its not hypocritical to turn around and be the Middle East Peace envoy after you bloody well started the war..!??'

Even worse, it would be like the Pope joining Mr Blair's party (if he were still in government) and then criticising him openly.

checkmark  I think we could manage a whole thread Virgin744 on whether it was worse to do the ME peace envoy bit or to complain about infallibility. To save the trouble, I will declare it a draw in advance.:D Although for simplicity I claim some points for the infallible bit!!  angel

It takes a catholic to understand the root of what the Pope is referring to here. I believe you are jewish and hence don't fully understand.

The Pope is, as all other Popes, trying to raise people above their base needs. To separate them from their animal needs to a more civilised existence based on love and restraint. I know how you see it, as I do sometimes. I take lots of people home and it ain't always with long term love and marriage in mind.  Wink

I believe Blair did this to make himself more attractive to the catholic states of Poland, Ireland, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal etc. He wants to be president of Europe someday and doesn't want his old religion standing in the way. Being Catholic gives him a lot of kudos with many populations.

What he said to the Pope is disgraceful and I would have excommunicated him on the spot. Tony-boy's only been a Catholic for a day and knows jack all  Yeah sure
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Blair thinks that he is God - so of course it's well within his right to criticise the Pope who is evidently beneath him.  Yeah sure

Papal infallibility was only invented in the mid to late 1800s anyway, so one could argue that it isn't essential to Catholicism.

If he wants to critisise the Pope SO WHAT !! I dont like Mr Blair or the current Pope. If the Catholic church eliminated all the Homosexuals out of the church ie: Priests then they would loose over a quarter of their Priests.

33 years on this earth and I have seen my fair share of double life leaders and hippocrites. So called devout Catholics who are married Men , up standing figures in their communities and then going to mass on Sundays. Then they go screw around with other Men.

Its always the ones who stand up and shout about loose women and Gays that are the biggest hippocrites of all. Either that or they are so ugly that they cant get laid themselves and want to ruin it for everyone else.

But why become one when you know the rules coming in? I understand your position on religion and the church which is why you do not belong. For you to join and then criticize would be hypocrtitical.

But they've been married for a very long time, and he only converted in the last few years.

That's because he no longer has political aspirations, having achieved the top job in the UK. So his religious views are no longer an anchor.

Amazing how political ambitions make a person compromise on their core beliefs.

LOL... I have no respect for him at all. I had alot of respect for John Paul and always watched his Easter messages on TV. This year I didnt even bother. One girl at work was always devout and went to mass and you couldnt even say a joke around her. In the last two years she has totally given up. Even brought in a Pork dinner on Good Friday. Even I had fish lol... Alot of people are becoming distant from the Catholic church and I have yet to meet one person here in Ireland that actually likes the new Pope. John Paul always gained respect here in Ireland.

I thought pork was forbidden for you due to your better half. Eating pork on Good Friday is not heroic, there is no hard and fast rule in Christianity. The rules are there and may sound tough, it is optional, recommended, but no one is enforcing it and shouldn't be enforced/judged by humans IMO.

Maybe you misunderstood the post. It was my collegue who took in the Pork and not me. I have not eaten Pork for over a year now. Thats not for any religious personal views , its out of respect for my partner and his religion.
