Problem With Removing Programs In Windows

Fri Apr 10, 2009 9:16 pm

I've had this problem for a while now: when I go to control panel and select "Add or remove programs", a box comes up with "Please wait while the list is being populated . . . ", and then nothing. I thought maybe a virus had worked its way into my computer and was preventing me from removing a program, but . . . I had Windows reinstalled a couple of weeks ago, and now I find the same thing.

So, computer geeks around the world . . . what's going on here? And more importantly, how do I get rid of an unwanted program?

Couple of suggestions here

Thanks Oly, but no joy. Tried the "Start/run/type" option, but nothing happened, and the page of advice seems to cover every problem with adding or removing programs but mine. Your help much appreciated.

I haven't had this issue but try booting into safe mode and see if you can access it then.

Also many programs have the option for you to uninstall it if you find the program group in the start menu.

Click Start -> Programs -> and then find the folder for your program and see if there is an uninstall option there.

One sure fire way is to open you programs folder, and delete the folder containing the program.
You just have to be real careful some of the files in said folder aren't being used by other programs. ".dll" files are famous for being shared files...

I'll assume you tried using the program's uninstall feature.

Maybe you've got a HD problem if it's come back after installing windows.

Try this:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/

The windows uninstaller blows anyways.

I've solved problems like your by doing a registry clean and then using a special program (like revo)

You should have received a "DLLRegisterServer successful" or the like message, or an error message.

So once again go

start-run and into the box goes the text:

regsvr32 appwiz.clp

(OK)

Tried that, but no change. Wonder why?

Success! Thanks for that FLY2HMO. At a friend's request I had installed Yahoo! Messenger, and, despite being certain I unticked the "Download the Yahoo toolbar" box, it wormed its way onto my system. (Maybe they've cleverly configured it so that unticking the box actually downloads the toolbar.) The amount of pop-up tips and other unwanted intrusions meant it had to go, along with Messenger.

So many thanks one and all for taking the time and trouble to post here.
