Which Cities Have Open Air Free Public Wifi?

Sat Apr 11, 2009 9:27 am

Just seen an interesting article where there is a trial of Free Wifi at public squares in Athens city center. I think its a great idea and great for tourists to be able to get good and free access to the Net.

Are there any other cities around the world that offer outside open air free Wifi??

Free internet access is readily available in Athens, with potentially hundreds of more hotspots coming soon to the rest of Greece.

BILJANA from Skopje kept the blog entry short.

"Chilly Sunday morning at Syntagma," Biljana blogged. "After an early morning jog, a no-sugar latte macchiato ... nice way to start the end of this weekend ... Hugs and kiss(inger) from Wi-Fi Syntagma!"

There are around 2000 free government WiFi hot spots around Hong Kong's parks, government buildings and libraries, and McDonalds in Hong Kong also offers 20 minutes of free WiFi.

Denver has it, at least along the 16th Street Mall in downtown. Not a bad deal.

Portions of the City of Cleveland Heights, OH (urban suburb of Cleveland, specifically the area surrounding the Coventry Village business district, but I think the city's other business districts also have coverage) do.

So do portions of the City of Cleveland (I've used it in the Playhouse Square and University Circle areas) -- though I think those may be sponsored by the orginizations in the respective areas rather than by the city itself. During the nicer months I'll take a nice long walk and wind up at University Circle as the 1/2 way point... drink some water, sit on a park bench enjoy the day, check email on my iPod and turn around for the walk back.

On my commute into the office (heading East from Cleveland Heights through a number of less urban decending to rural suburbs) I can keep my iPod connected to a wireless network for probably 50% of the mileage.

There are places all over Portland that have it. The city tried to set up a city-wide wi-fi zone, but they lost so much money on it, they quit doing it. I used it a couple of times and it was good. The antennas are still up. All over PDX one can see cone-like things on top of traffic signals. So, it could be started at any time.

Nearly every McDonalds in Australia has free WiFi. I know ADL has it inside the terminal, but don't know where else.

By the look of it, Auckland does too. But I haven't used it nor need/want to use it but I could go test it out sometime for the sake of it. Then again Starbucks has wifi throughout the city and maybe country.

Lots of places in Jersey have free wifi, as well as every McDonalds in the UK. Funnily enough, I was in Amsterdam the other week for work and we were looking for somewhere to sit outside that had wifi to enjoy the warm sun and a cold beer. Unfortunately it didn't happen  Sad

Almost all truckstops have WIFI access (it's slowly starting to come online at Canadian truckstops), but none of them are free. Most charge between $4 & $7 per day. Some states offer free WIFI in their rest areas (Teaxs and Iowa come to mind).

Safeway stores in Canada with Starbucks have started offering WIFI services, but I'm not sire of the cost, if any.

YWG has WIFI service through Telus, though again, cost unknown.

Gura Humorului, a small town in Northern Romania is the first one in the country to have free public wi-fi that covers the entire area of the town, according to local press. I have not verified that information.

I think this thread was about government sponsored free wifi. These are private companies, and funded by them.

Many airports in the US talk about their free wifi, but I have yet to find one that is actually free, except for maybe Terminal D in DFW, but I can't remember, it was at the end of a very long trip.

I can't think of any place that has free wifi sponsored by the government anywhere where I live, only private companies.....

Starbucks and Barnes and Noble charge for theirs.

Im interested to know of any Free Wifi in Airports/Public areas/Cities etc. But they must be free for all to use and not have to have an account with them.

City of Tucson, Arizona offers free Wi-Fi downtown at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library. You can get the signal as far away as the Government Complex and some of the restaurants across the street.

I used Terminal D last October and there is free WiFi, though I couldn't get it to work. The ones you have to pay for were, naturally, easy to connect to.

ABQ offers free WiFi in throughout the terminal and it works pretty well.

Iowa does the same for it's Interstate rest stops.

LOL.. that was the same for me in LHR Terminal 2 . I thought maybe it was an issue with my laptop until others complained of the same thing. The Free Wifi in Star Alliance Lounge Terminal 1 LHR is good though.

Doesn't Seoul, South Korea have this? I was just watching a program on CBS (or PBS, can't really remember) a few days ago and they were talking about how South Korea has been ranked the world's most wired (and wireless) country. They were going on about how if you go anywhere in Seoul, you'll be able to connect to a wireless signal...
