There's honestly not much for tourists in Richmond. You can walk up and down Cary Street, which has a wide variety of interesting shops. There's a holocaust museum and you can visit Edgar Allen Poe's house. Hollywood Cemetery is pretty interesting. It's very, very big and contains the grave of a couple Confederate generals and the old confederate president. It's a great place for walking, especially in the spring and summer when all the trees and flowers have blossomed. Richmond was the old confederacy capital. You can go swimming in the James River if you come in the summer, but that's more reserved for the youth. There are two hookah bars near Broad Street if that appeals to you. Near the airport there is not much to do at all. I've never been to the museum even though I fly out of RIC
15-20 times a year. I find Richmond pretty boring but I'm sure for the first time visitor you will be able to find enough to do for the day.
King's Dominion is sort of "ghetto" and more out of your way than the more prestigious Busch Gardens, which actually can't be more than a 30 minute drive east of the airport in Williamsburg. Busch Gardens is valued more for its cultural displays than its coasters. The park is based on 4 or 5 European countries and offers a variety of restaurants and other cultural activities. It's much better for the older generation; plus it's right next to the Anheuser-Busch brewery, and I see in your profile that you like to collect shot glasses. So Busch-Gardens may actually be an attractive option for you. If your up for the drive, Williamsburg has many, many historical landmarks and museums from the colonial days if that suits you. I despised that place as a kid, but many people come to RIC
just to visit Williamsburg and Jamestown.
Hope this helps. From this analysis it seems to me you may enjoy renting a car on your day off and taking a trip east to Williamsburg to visit Anheuser-Busch and some old colonial settlements. I'll be honest with you though, I've never been to the Anheuser-Busch brewery so I don't know if tours or even buyable shot glasses for that matter are available. Richmond, in my opinion, is a drab city, but I live here so I've seen most of it many times.
The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...
