NHL Playoffs Are Here!

Mon Apr 13, 2009 6:31 am

Ok so they have just annouced the round 1 playoff schedule, which starts on Wednesday!

In the East we have:

Boston vs Montreal
Washington vs New York Rangers
New Jersey vs Carolina
Pittsburgh vs Phillidelphia

In the West we have:

San Jose vs Anaheim
Detroit vs Columbus
Vancouver vs St. Louis
Chicago vs Calgary

What is everyones bets?

For me I would say:

Boston in 6 (as much as I love Montreal)
Washington in 5
New Jersey in 7 (as hot as they are, Goaltending is key)
Pittsbugh in 5 (Syd is going to put on an impressive play offs)

Anaheim in 7 (big upset)
Detroit in 6 (Even though their Goalie is a bit week, they still have tons of fire power)
Vancouver in 6 (GO CANUCKS GO! Kesler, Burrows, Sedinsx2, Luongo we have this)
Calgary in 7 (Iginla is going to improve and carry his team)

And who do you think are going to win everything?

I am going to say Vancouver after playing New Jersey in the finals!
Keep the shinny side up!

Boston in 5 (this Montreal team doesn't have the cajones of last year's team that managed to take the Bruins to 7)
Ovechkin in 6
New Jersey in 5
Pittsburgh in 7

San Jose in 5
Detroit in 4 (sorry, Blue Jackets, but just take it all in for now)
Vancouver in 6
Chicago in 7 (this is going to be one hell of a series. There are so many story lines here: Khabibulin going back to Calgary for a playoff game since winning the Cup in '04 and how will Kane/Toews do in their 1st playoff appearance, for instance.)

All 1,2,3,4 winning. Hmm...I honestly can't justify anything else though.

Quoting ZBBYLW (Thread starter):
the East we have:

Boston vs Montreal
Washington vs New York Rangers
New Jersey vs Carolina
Pittsburgh vs Phillidelphia

In the West we have:

San Jose vs Anaheim
Detroit vs Columbus
Vancouver vs St. Louis
Chicago vs Calgary

Boston in five.
In the most entertaining series of the opening round (good ol’ smashmouth hockey, with scrums after every whistle), Boston’s talent is simply too much for Montreal with its internal soap opera to overcome.

Washington in five.
For the Rangers to have any chance of winning this series, Lundquist has to play perfect hockey, Theodore has to have a meltdown of all meltdowns, and the shaky rangers defense has to shut down Washington’s potent offensive attack. While both option #1 and option #2 are very likely, the Rangers defense has been their Achilles heel the entire season. The only reason why any game in this series is close is because of Lundquist.

Carolina in six.
The red hot and underrated Hurricanes, who have probably been the NHL’s best team of the past month, shut down the skidding Devils. St. Patrick’s Day will prove to be Marty’s only party this year.

Flyers in six.
Penguins have quietly turned their season around since firing Therrien, but Philly’s size and aggressive forecheck will beat up the softer Pens. Carter and Richards will prove to be a better combo than Malkin-Crosby, and all of Canada drools as they see their likely 2010 olympian checking center (Richards) shut down the potent Malkin.

Second Round:
Boston over Carolina in six
Philly over Washington in six

Conference Finals:
Boston over Philly in six

Sharks in five.
Anaheim’s been all over the place, and the Sharks just have too much talent for the ducks to overcome. Even if Jumbo Joe doesn’t produce, Sharks will still be able to chomp on the Ducks.

Columbus in seven.
I might be crazy, but Columbus has all the hallmarks of a team primed for a first round upset. A tight, defensive first team backed up by Steve Mason (who should be the Hart Trophy winner this year, even if he doesn’t get it) shut down the Red Wings’ offensive attack and get a couple of lucky puck bounces to baffle Osgood.

Vancouver in five.
Another red-hot team, everything is coming together for the Canucks, and Luongo’s goaltending will be too much for the up and coming Blues to overcome.

Chicago in five.
Calgary has been on the skids since the trade deadline, and the young and fearless Blackhawks take advantage of Calgary’s tentative play and make them pay.

Second Round
San Jose over Columbus in six
Vancouver over Chicago in seven

Conference Finals
Vancouver over San Jose in Seven

Stanley Cup Finals
Boston over Vancouver in six

I'm going with:

Boston in 5- I just don't think Montreal's heart is in it- plus, Boston has been too dominant this year.

Washington in 6- I'm not sold on Theodore being able to carry this team far, but Varlamov's too inexperienced to use as a starter.

Carolina in 7- my upset pick in the East.

Philadelphia in 7- they'll be motivated after blowing their shot at home ice, and I think they have more playoff grit than Pittsburgh. Still- this should be a fun series to watch.

San Jose in 6- I think Anaheim will be a tough opponent for San Jose, but they've been too inconsistent at times this year.

Detroit in 4- Congrats on making the playoffs Columbus- maybe next year you'll have enough experience to win a game.

Vancouver in 5- St Louis is hot, but if I remember right- Vancouver had a better record down the stretch. Also, Mason must be dog-tired for the Blues- I think he's started something like 33 straight games for them. I also doubt Kariya will be in any form to play if he's avaliable- yes, he's well-rested, but how rusty must he be?

Calgary in 7- I can easily see Chicago winning in 7 here as well though.

Boston vs Montreal - Boston in 5
Washington vs New York Rangers - Washington in 6
New Jersey vs Carolina - New Jersey in 6
Pittsburgh vs Phillidelphia - Philly in 7

In the West we have:

San Jose vs Anaheim - San Jose in 6
Detroit vs Columbus - Detroit in 6
Vancouver vs St. Louis - St. Louis in 6
Chicago vs Calgary - Chicago in 7

There won't be a single Canadian team past the first round. Sorry to break it to all those 'die-hard' (lol) Canucks fans, but St. Louis is going to take the series. They've had the Canucks number for quite some time... and the Blues aren't a one-man show.

Hell will freeze over before those eternal underachieving Vancouver Canucks get themselves back into the Cup final, let alone win the Stanley Cup!

No Dallas Stars this year, the Flames are going through their annual 'choke-a-thon'... and the weather is nice outside... playoffs 2009 will be an after thought.

Alright, I'll have a go at this.

Boston over Montreal in 4. The Bruins look solid overall. Montreal had to click their heels and make a wish to their fairy godmother just to get into the playoffs. They do not look like a playoff caliber team, unfortunately (they were my preseason pick to win it all).

Ovechkin over Rangers in 6. The Rangers have some bite in them now that the ratbastard is back on the team. It will not be enough, though, as Ovechkin scores 7 and assists on 4.

Carolina over Dirty Jerz in 6. Carolina is playing inspired hockey right now. Jerz looks pretty beat down.

Pittsburgh over Philly in 5. Philly couldn't secure home ice by even getting one point against the Rangers. Now they have to face the much more talented Pens. No chance.

Anaheim over San Jose in 7. Another year, another bust for San Jose. I am no fan of Anaheim, but they have been extremely hot the past couple months while San Jose has only played mediocre hockey.

Detroit over Columbus in 5. Columbus wins game 2! Unfortunately they lose the other four. Neither team is playing well right now, though, and if Detroit's goaltending doesn't improve and quickly, Columbus could pull a shocker.

Vancouver over St. Louis in 7. St. Louis is playing like it deserves to be in the playoffs. Unfortunately, so is Vancouver, and Vancouver is a better, deeper team.

Chicago over Calgary in 5. Calgary will win one at home to keep from being swept, but they have been in a free fall lately while Chicago keeps moving up fast.

As a Nashville Predators fan i am compelled to root for the Columbus Blue Jackets, St Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings, and the Chicago Black Hawks in the west (Although i only really like Columbus and Chicago). In the East: Go Rangers, Penguins

I would love to see a re-match of 1994. But, this time, all the refs can be hired from Western Canada instead of the Tri-State area like back then. When the butt of a stick ends up under a helmet, that is a penalty. Unless it happens to a certain red, white, and blue sweater wearing team.

Other than that, Calgary will put up a hell of a fight. That one is hard to read. San Jose will struggle and go out with a whimper. Detroit will hand Columbus their a*ses. I don't know anything about the East.

What happened to Osgood or whoever their goalie was last year?

I am rooting for Pittsburgh to beat the Flyers. If they lose, then go Flyers!

Somewhat unrelated, but GO SIXERS, TOO!! Wouldn't it be thrilling to have PA represent all 4 major league teams in the championships for 2008-2009? We already had the Phills winning the World Series and the Steelers winning the Super Bowl. How cool would it be to see either the Pens or Flyers winning the Cup and the Sixers winning the NBA title?

I know... dare to dream. Besides, I don't think the Sixers stand a chance against LeBron and his Cleveland Cavs anyway...

Go Pens!! (Go Flyers if they should win! I have to root for anything Pennsylvanian)

Hasek started and when he choked, Osgood stepped up and stood on his head a couple times to play a major role in the Wings winning the cup. I don't see that happening this year. That being said, Wings in 6.

Quoting ZBBYLW (Thread starter):
Boston vs Montreal
Washington vs New York Rangers
New Jersey vs Carolina
Pittsburgh vs Phillidelphia

Montreal over Boston - Biggest upset of the playoffs. I'm reading everybody else picking Boston, and killing Columbus in the west in 4-5 games... yet they have the same amount of playoff experience in recent years. Yeah they got an 8 seed last year, but lost in 7 to the Canadiens. As much as the Canadian teams aren't as strong this year, don't count them out of any series.

Washinton over the Rangers - Sorry.. I just hate the Rangers.

Devils over Hurricanes - No doubt..... probably in 5.

Penguins over Flyers in 7.... gonna be an awesome series.

Quoting ZBBYLW (Thread starter):
San Jose vs Anaheim
Detroit vs Columbus
Vancouver vs St. Louis
Chicago vs Calgary

San Jose over Anaheim - Another great battle like the Pens-Flyers that will probably go 7.

Columbus over Detroit - Will probably go to overtime in game 7 to be decided. Teams have been on eachother with strong play all year.

Vancouver over St. Louis - Goes 6 games

Chicago over Calgary - Was hoping the Jackets would end up with Calgary in the 6-3 matchup (would have been excellent for Jackets) but both fell down the stretch. I see Chicago in 7.

The west is just too tight all around this year.

That's too bad. That being said, I still wouldn't want to face Detroit again in the Cup series! The first 2 games of the series last year, they made the Pens look more inept than my high school team!  scared

It doesn't matter who goes down. Someone has to step in and step up. One person going down should not mean that they no longer have a chance; that it's time to hit the panic button and/or abandon ship. They just have to change their approach somewhat.

Hopefully they can do that again, but God help the opposing team if they do!

Might as well add my picks for the rest of the playoffs. Again, here is what I think for the first round:

Quoting Texan (Reply 6):
Boston over Montreal in 4.

Ovechkin over Rangers in 6.

Carolina over Dirty Jerz in 6.

Pittsburgh over Philly in 5.

Anaheim over San Jose in 7.

Detroit over Columbus in 5.

Vancouver over St. Louis in 7.

Chicago over Calgary in 5.

Next round:
Boston over Carolina in 6.
Washington over Pittsburgh in 7. Ovie v. Crosby and Malkin. Cannot wait!

Anaheim over Detroit in 6. Anaheim has goaltending. Detroit doesn't.
Chicago over Vancouver in 6. This series sounds exciting.

Boston over Washington in 7.
Chicago over Anaheim in 6.

Cup Finals:
And in this matchup we have two of the Original 6 going against each other with the result...
Boston over Chicago in 6! And the Bruins bring the Stanley Cup back to the city, if not the arena, that such greats as Ray Borque and Cam Neely built up. And yes, the only reason I have Chicago winning the West is so we can have an Original 6 matchup in the Finals. Somehow Washington v. Anaheim just doesn't sound as good as Boston v. Chicago.

Boston vs Montreal
It's gonna be rough, it's gonna be dirty. It's gonna go down to the wire. Montreal in seven.

Washington vs New York Rangers
Washington are to slick, speedy and confident right now to get bogged down by the rangers. Caps in 5.

New Jersey vs Carolina
Another year, another series and devils will find another way to win. NJD in 6.

Pittsburgh vs Phillidelphia
This series has the potential to rival the Habs vs Bruins. I'm confident Philly will put the paddles to Crosby and co. Philly in 5.

San Jose vs Anaheim
This is going to get dirty. SJ in 6

Detroit vs Columbus
The wings will crush Columbus. Sorry but 1.5 players a team does not make.

Vancouver vs St. Louis
Canucks will find themselves and take it is 6

Chicago vs Calgary
Calgary are already fading so this series at this point looks like it's the 'hawks' to lose.

I fear for my habs...but nothing gets them going like a Boston series. Yet, I don't think they have the strength or depth to get it done. It will be awesome and ugly and great to watch hockey but sadly, Bruins in 6.

Caps in 5

Carolina in 5

Penguins in 6

I think those Ducks will put up a hell of a fight but I reckon Sharks in 7

Dead things no longer...the scariest team in the league...skills and discipline like nobody else. Detroit will sweep

Canuckleheads are looking very strong...Van in 6.

Flames are hurting bad...they played the last few games with 3 lines. If they can get some bodies back, they have a chance. I say Calgary in 7.

Rene Bourque skated yesterday along with Phaneuf... both are ready for game 1.

Calgary also called up another 6 skaters (including a goalie) from Quad Cities, it's nice that the salary cap doesn't factor into the playoffs, so we'll have 4 full lines ready for game 1.

Given the Flames performance over the last 6-8 weeks... it doesn't look good, but the playoffs are a whole other ball game. If Calgary can get a win in Chicago (either game 1 or 2), then their chances of winning the series are far greater than currently expected.

I look forward to a thorough Canucks crushing at the hands of the St. Louis Blues... the one team that had a better 2nd half then the Canucks did, all done without the drama, glitz & glam that soaked the Canucks earlier in the season.

Could very well be. But the Leafs GM made it very clear last night he has his sights set for J.T. and, Burke makes things happen.

I understand why Toronto would be interested in Tavares, but if I was Tavares, I'd almost dread going to a place where everybody, even the janitors are a critic. If he has one hiccup, the press and fans would be all over him.

At what cost?

The Leafs seem to be ready to trade away whatever it takes to get Tavares on board... so they'll end up with a marquee player and have nothing else left... so, another round of playoffs missed in 2010... and everything stays as is in Toronto.

I shudder to think at what the Leafs would have to do to get that first pick. (They have number 7 at the moment, right?)

Maybe Luke Schenn, two first-round picks and two-second round picks, or something ridiculous like that. I just can't see it being worth it: with what they'd have to give up, they'd have an even weaker team surrounding Tavares, and the losing would seem likely to continue for quite a while.

I know the Leafs did (a little bit) better than expected this year, but there's still a lot of rebuilding to do. I think throwing away a lot of assets to get JT would be a terrible idea at this point.

Maybe Luke Schenn

i can't see Burke moving him or Toskala. Schenn is a building block while i think they are going tgive Vesa another chance seeing that he was playing hurt most of last season. They have a lot options to use such as draft picks, players and taking on salary from other teams. I agree, it's goingto take a lot to get him here and i have my doubts, it's just that when Burke says these things he has ways of making things happen.  twocents .

NYI may take Hedman and Toronto will do something with Tampa to get second pick and snatch J.T.?  stirthepot   stretch   stretch

Dead things no longer...the scariest team in the league...skills and discipline like nobody else. Detroit will sweep

Scariest team? That was last year. The Wings were pissed off the entire year, and played like it. This year? They're probably the most schizo in the league. If they actually play like they're interested in the game, they're unstoppable. If they play like they have for a good 70 games this year....who knows what the hell will happen. That team has me stressed out beyond all get out.

Leaf fans...it won't matter who you draft. Your team and the minor leaguers will never improve if your GM from the Ducks (sorry, but that sucks) doesn't get decent scouts.

Boston vs Montreal - Boston in 6
This looks like a very promising match up.

Washington vs New York Lundqvist - Washington in 5
Lundqvist is great. He has carried the Rangers this season. Check out the stats for goals scored by the Rangers. Add a subpar defense and their season ends early.

New Jersey vs Carolina - Carolina in 7. These two teams are about as interesting as white noise and I hope gets eliminated as soon as possible.

Pittsburgh vs Phillidelphia - Penguins in 7. Interesting match up, home advantage will seal this for the Penguins.

In the West we have:

San Jose vs Anaheim - San Jose in 5
Joe will be invisible as always but the Sharks are a much better team.

Team Sweden vs Columbus - Detroit in 6
The Swedish wings needs good goaltending. Question is if Osgood can perform.

Vancouver vs St. Louis - Vancouver in 6.
The Blues are content with reaching the play off's and doesn't have the juice to step it up again. They have played to many must win games and the canucks is a team with two lines this year.

Chicago vs Calgary - Chicago in 7
Calgary has NHL:s worst coach and despite having a roaster that should make them favourites for Lord Stanley they will say good bye to the play off's in the first round. Fire Keenan anyone...

-----------------------------------------------------------

Since I read Swedish newspapers I reckon the draft will turn out differently than most other here reckons.

Islanders will go for Tavares.
Tavares will become a good NHL player, but not a superstar. However Tavares fits perfectly with Okposo so I cant see any reason for the Islanders to pass on Tavares.

Colorado will trade up and secure the rights of Hedman.
The Avalanche has sent Lacroix to Ovik and have met with Hedmans and his family several times. They want him and will do their utmost to get him.
Hedman is being mentored by Oviks favourite son Peter Forsberg and he only has good things to say about the Avalanche and about Hedman.

The question is what the Avalanche can offer Tampa.
Tampa needs defenders as well so I guess the Avalanche will have to offer something good. Interesting indeed.

Ovechkin over Rangers in 6. The Rangers have some bite in them now that the ratbastard is back on the team. It will not be enough, though, as Ovechkin scores 7 and assists on 4.

Washinton over the Rangers - Sorry.. I just hate the Rangers.

Rangers just took game 1.

LETS GO RANGERS!!!!

Wow who watched the Canucks game? Those refs need to keep quite WAY to many penalties its playoff hockey - Let them play!

Either way Canucks won! Go Canucks Go!

Too bad the Blues fell short...  Sad

Devils win was convincing, however.

That was a very good game. I think both teams settled down in the second, but Vancouver kept the pressure on. I think there were so many penalties called because they were committed right in front of the refs. How much more obvious could a person be?

i made a wager... columbus in 7. was given good odds.
will it happen, prolly not... but first round exits of top seeds has happened in the past...

06 oilers over the wings
03 ducks over wings
02 habs over bruins
01 kings over wings
00 sharks over blues (blues won the pres trophey that year)
94 sharks over wings

As good as the wings have been over the past two decades, they've been known to faulter in the first round.

i see mason continuing his heroics in the post season.

for the record, im a die hard hawks fan having grown up in chicago. hope habby keeps up the solid play and we get sscoring from three lines.

GO HAWKS

I guess that's why they call him Jose "Three-or-More"

Doesn't mean anything. While I do see him being a great fit in Denver, I just don't know what the Avalanche would offer the Lightning in return--the avs prospect system needs replenishing and doesn't have that many blue-chippers, and the Lightning have a desperate need for defense.
Only way I'd see that trade going down is, at minimum, offering the lightning their 1st round pick this year, and at least one additional first round pick--something, that if I were Colorado, I'd be hesitant to give up.

The defending Stanley Cup Champs are back. Ozzie stood on his head for 20 minutes, and the team layed the BJs out for 40. It's only one game, but I'm this ( ) much less stressed. Go Wings!

All it took was one game to see that Calgary won't be around for long... again... good thing I'm not a die-hard fan or I'd probably be breaking things tonight... lol.

No power play, Iginla MIA once again, that reject Anders Erikkson getting ice time (and subsequently coughing up the puck to allow the tying goal), Keenan's refusal to remove Jokinen from the top line... ugh...

I saw a picture of him in one of those motivational posters the other day from when he was on the Blue Jackets. It said "Playing Out Of Position: It usually doesn't work". Don't remember where I saw it but it was pretty funny that you mention him.

As for my BlueJackets...... I'm still not changing.... its a long series and we've got 6 games left to turn it around  crossfingers

Anyone see the Vancouver/St Louis game Friday? St Louis is good, but their coach was pissed at the end of the game! He pulled their goalie, Vancouver scored a third goal and he was upset.
