I don't know about the GLK (is that the Merk?); have to say I've seen the Q5 and it looks gorgeous, inside and out, so that would be my "heart" choice - and you can't go far wrong with an Audi (well, not recently anyway!).

Have you considered the Volvo XC60? That's a pretty nice car too; I drive a Volvo myself and I'd recommend them anytime. Again, always a safe bet (in more ways than one!)

Generally speaking, I think Merc's quality still has not returned to its original levels. It's way better than the early 2000 models, but I think their reliability is still something to consider.
I havent driven the Q5, but wouldnt be surprised if its got a hard ride like all Audis these days, save the TT. IMHO the Merc is more luxurious, the Q5 more sporty.

Yes I have  Smile, mom in-law had an S80 and it got trashed by truck, police said the only reason she is still with us is because she was in a Volvo....(she has now a smaller car, MB C240) the XC60, just gorgeous the only draw back is its all wheel drive system (my opinion only)....

Agree and that is why I thought, lets check with the a.net friends

Have not driven any of them yet..... will do it next week  Smile

And yes it is MB GLK & Audi Q5

I rode in an S-Line A4 with 18” summer wheels a few times last week and I didn’t find it excessively hard (unlike a TT I rode in a few weeks ago), so I think the Q5 would be just fine. I’ve also ridden in a Q7 and it wasn’t too bad either.

@ Swissy: Gruezi! If I would be rich enough to buy a car, I would without a doubt choose the Q5 over the GLK - I am not too fond of MB’s, but I really like Audis. I also think an A6 wouldn’t have been much worse in your in-law’s accident.

Or you could wait until next year and buy what will probably be the pick of the midsize Euro SUV's and get the new X3. I would also ad the Freelander to your list to drive, it's surprisingly good and has the best AWD system should you ever decide to cross a muddy field.

Q5 over GLK it's a tough one, both are excellent vehicles, I like the look of the Q5 but it's all down to what you prefer when you drive it. I don't think either of them would let you down.

How are Iceland's roads? I guess when I mean hard I mean when I hit a bump/ small pothole, audis for me tend to crash into them, whereas Mercs tend to "iron them out". Specific models are the RS4 and the A6.

Iceland’s roads suck. I haven’t ridden in an RS4, so I don’t really know what kind of hardness you are talking about. I must admit I couldn’t “live with” a TT, but I’m sure the Q5 isn’t so bad.  Smile I liked the A4’s hard-smoothness...

I do not have a problem with a firm ride at all... my Allroad is pretty stiff/comfortable....

Have seen both cars and they both have exquisite interior materials & space considering the size.... do not want a true SUV, we have an 08 Subi Tribeca already and I just want something a bit smaller with full time all wheel drive in the mid size wagon/cuv category

What is the point of getting a GLK or a Q5 when a normal AWD sedan or Wagon will do the same job but for less gas and has probably same interior room?

Not like you can tow anything more than a Playskool toy set with those 2 cars, and cant drive on anything worse than a dry dirt road.

As compared to what? GLK and Q5 have worthless systems as well. They are crossovers, which means by definition they are worthless and a waste of money when the same thing can be had in a sedan or wagon with AWD.

It's a great handling car but I felt that whenever you'd go over bumps it was too hard. If it were a track-tuned car like an R8, i'd forgive it, but because the RS4 is a compromise sports saloon, i can't.
Swissy, All Audis have bulletproof interiors, btw. Mercs come off a little chinsy compared to audis.

You can't get that raised seating position in a sedan or wagon that you get in a crossover. If that is what you want then they are not worthless.

And why would you want to drive as if you're sitting in a tall barstool? For looking over traffic? You need a semi truck to do that.

Anyways, Q5, by a long shot.

My Allroad has over 100hp more since I got it and I am averaging 28-34 mpg far better compare to before....

The Allroad is a wagon (A 6 Avant).......hence that is why I am looking for a cuv, neither do I need anything for towing/serius off road, otherwise I would get myself a UNIMOG

Getting older and I like the fact a cuv is easier accessible compare to a wagon... SUV would be over kill and I have no need for it....

For the driving/useage I have, I prefer permanent all wheel drive

Yes, buy a sedan.

A quattro estate Audi give you the same off-road capabilities, space and much better handling than a Q5.

Clearly you have not driven a Q5, it drives pretty much like the A4 it's based on, mileage isn't much worse, you get easier access, a raised seating position and more room. The OP already has an Audi A6 Allroad which is a jacked up A6 quattro estate, he wants something different, as he's already an Audi owner and appears to like the brand then a Q5 is probably a no brainer. However the OP should get out and drive the GLK and Q5, relying on us lot who all have our own opinions is just about pointless.

That's pretty much what someone told me with regards to X3 vs. 3-series. I almost believed him until I got to drive one.

The most you can say is it drives well.... for a SUV. At least the X3 has significantly more space than the 3-series, which the Q5 vs. an estate A4 does not.

Fuel consumption for a A4 state vs. Q5 with the 170hp diesel is 6,2 vs. 6,8... almost 9% difference.

If the OP wants a SUV nobody stops him from getting one, but he asked for opinions and there's mine.

Salut!

I believe you.  Silly

I think that the roads and Autobahns here are pretty bad so I wouldn’t want to travel in a TT, although I’m sure the Q5 isn’t too bad.

Why don’t you test drive the GLK and Q5 and decide for yourself which to get?

I would simply get the Q5 as it’s an Audi and looks way better than the Cadillac CTS-squared GLK. Big grin

You guys get all the sweet engines, over here (Canada) gasoline only  Angry

I did book test drives for both of them next week, I find it helpful if you can get some inside info from current owners.... we all know the car sales guys......  Wink

I also understand that people think you better do not ask any opinions on the a.net..... I enjoy the "multi culti" opinions/thoughts and take it for what it is.... and yes it is sometimes helpful

Had no bad experience with Audi and when something went wrong dealership took care above and beyond..... We have currently 3 MBs in our family and they all have no issues....

The problem I have with the current X3 is its size and the closest dealer ship sucks big time.

Compared to an e90 3 series the X3 isn't that great, rather like compareing the e46 to the e90, since the e46 is what the X3 is based on. It's always been harsh riding as well. The comparisson isn't the same as the A4 to Q5 or C class to GLK both of which are much more like the saloons they are based on than the 3 series to the X3.

I feel your pain, VW’s common rail Diesels are really nice; I would rather want a manual-shift Q5 with the 2-litre turbodiesel (tuned to 190 hp) rather than a Q5 with the DSG and the 3.2-litre FSI engine. Maybe you can get a Q5 from Europe? Would be more fun I’d guess. Big grin

Pretty sure it will be, or it may even skip a generation and sit on the next 3 series chassis.

There is the X1 due this year which will undercut 3 series touring prices, with AWD and more room. The latest issue of Car magazine has a story about it, they even got to drive the prototype which they raved about, said it was the best crossover to date, so it must bode well for the new X3

If they're slotting a smaller X1 it sort of makes sense. After all, the X5 grew up precisely because of that.

Stopping these crossover bullshit (X1-X3-X5, Q3-Q5-Q7, Touareg-Tiguan) would make even more sense.

I'd definitely get the Audi but I'm of the camp who generally doesn't see the point in a car based SUV.

The GLK is terrible (IMO). At least the Audi looks a bit more graceful and has a top notch interior.

No its Garden Motors in Burlington... apparently they are building right now the most outrages
new dealer facility in North America, building should be ready this spring.... and it is located on the North side of the 403 just after the split Queenie/403 heading west on the 403....

Just got back from the Audi dealer..... went for 1 hr drive with the Q5, it was the premium model with the technology package..... all I can say is WOW did not expect that at all, very roomy, very comfortable/quiet, agile and that 3.2 has power to spare, strong brakes, 6 speed is sweet, interior absolutely top notch, however panorama roof does nothing for me... other than that super experience, also despite using the right foot more/harder than usual we still managed to average 9.1l..... Sales partner also offerd now a Q5 for a weekend..... if I want too.

Isn’t one of the points of the X3 being not very big? I thought so at least, as some people don’t want BIG crossovers…

The x3 is based on the previous generation 3-series frame, which in my mind is a tad too narrow. I don't think the X3 will become a hulking monster

I haven't driven either, but I've sat in both. And the Q5 wins for presentation hands down. The quality of interior materials in the latest MB products leaves a lot to be desired unless you're in the S. Unless the Q5 is seriously underpowered, I don't think there's anything that would sway me to the GLK.

That was my impression too and until yesterday I wasn't too sure if the 3.2L will do it in the
Q5..... but the Q5 has plenty of hp under the hood with the 3.2L, what impressed me the most is the feeling of space in the Q5, lots of elbow room, I am 6'2" and there is still enough room in the back left... anyhow take the kids with me today to do full scale space test Big grin....

Final update....

Got myself the GLK, will be ready by Monday....

Liked both vehicles from the beginning the availability of the Q5 is very limited if you do not want to settle for the basic or fully loaded one and you do not care too much about the color, more luck with the GLK....

Quality wise based on my humble opinion they are very close, GLK has more of a rugged dashboard while the Q5 is more towards nicely done sedan.... The Q5 feels more nimble & agile with plenty of hp under the hood, GLK to my surprise handles very neutral and solid with very little or no body lean in corners, strong motor and very good torque, they have about the same space inside, GLK has a more airier feeling because the Q5 roof line is lower, had no issues with both... sitting in the Q5 is more on the sportcar side while the GLK is more towards a SUV, they both drive firm and absorb the cr... roads here in Ontario very well (my opinion).

One of the major reasons I went for the GLK is: price, availability, it appears Audi is far less flexible compare to MB with the pricing.... they were able to give me a car I like with a color I love and is medium loaded......  Smile and got it all for a lot less $$$ compare to Audi.
