Direct TV Vs. Time Warner Cable

Thu Apr 16, 2009 5:00 am

My dad just told me he is switching us from Time Warner Cable to Direct TV, is this a good thing or should I be worried? Almost all my friends around here have cable and with the varied weather we get here in Wisconsin I'm a bit worried about having to rely on a dish.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

I don't know in WI, but here in Houston, TWC was horrible and haven't really had a problem with DirecTV, except when we lost power during Hurricane Ike.

Get AT&T Uverse if it is available in your area. Way better than either!

Agree 100% - they suck.

I have TWC for my cable, Internet and phone service in San Diego and have had no problems with it and am satisfied with the service that I receive and the price of the bundle of services.

Didn't Time Warner Cable leave Houston and the area taken over by Comcast recently?
We currently have DirecTV. We love it. We previously had Dish Network. DirecTV is superior to Dish Network in terms of picture and audio. The picture on DirecTV is sharper and the sound much more clearer.

Oh yeah and another thing. When you have the Weather Channel on cable it usually shows local weather conditions and forecasts periodically, When you have a satellite system it doesn' t show that, just a generalized national forecast. One of the few disadvantages to satellite TV.

Yeah Comcast bought them out, but the service still isn't as good whether as TWC or Comcast. Had cable and internet with them, and had more problems with their signal than my current with DirecTV and AT&T DSL.

So what does that mean about local channels/news?

You do get local news based on whatever channels they are. More or less channels on DirecTV start on ch. 100.

Trust me...as a comcast sufferer I can tell you that service will NOT improve.

Good to know. As soon as I am able to commit to a year of service I will switch to DirectTV.

As for their service, my brother had DirectTV for a while. He told me service is only an issue in really bad weather. (i.e., normal inclement weather does not disrupt service).

Directv was a rip. Plus in the summer in Florida...well, same crap everyday around 4pm lol. I'm paying $86 (with tax) for digital cable and roadrunner turbo. Before I was paying $84 just for the Directv, and a separate $45 for roadrunner.

Oh search for complaints about people being automatically renewed a year if something broke and had to be replaced with Directv.

I used to live in Illinois when I had DirecTV and about the only time I lost reception was during heavy thunderstorms.

Well, you and your friends should get together and rent an apartment and buy yourselves a cable subscription - problem solved!  Smile

We had Dish network for awhile and the guys who installed it were Dish Network contractors. They just aimed the dish in a general direction and tightened it diown. If someone was out watering their lawn we'd lose the signal.
When we dropped Dish and went to Direct the installed checked the dish signal strength with a meter before locking it down. It now takes a pretty massive storm for our DirecTV to be interrupted.
We had an old DirecTV box that was geting flaky on us. We called Direct up and they sent a new one FedEx next day air to us without charge! And you don't get India when you call them either!
