Questions On The Parliment Square In London

Mon Apr 20, 2009 3:29 pm

I forgot to ask about these at the LHR meet. Perhaps someone from the UK would be good enough to explain them.

Is this some sort of sun dial on St. Margarets Church by Westminster Abbey?

Why the statue of Abraham Linclon in Parliment Square?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Thanks for that. I wondered why the dial was on the north facing side of the church. We didn't go around the other side so I never saw the other one.

As to the Lincoln statue, I guess my question is still why a statue of Lincoln in Parliment Sqaure? I guess I would have thought it would have been reserved for someone great in UK government?

You know, I kind of felt like that when I saw the statue of Sir Douglas Haig on Whitehall. I would have figured that even though he was in charge at the end of the war, the casualty counts of the battles of the Somme and third Ypres would have diminished his popularity. But I'm certainly not infallible!  wink

I remember when I saw this statue of the Great Emancipator for the first time, my first thought was "Geez, the Brits will do anything to suck up to the Americans - American tourists anyway".

I did a little googling on the topic and it seems that the statue was erected to celebrate one hundred years of peace between Great Britain and the US of A (1815-1915 ?). I still don't know why it was given such a prominent place in Parliament Square?

Maybe it was because Lincoln was always held in high regard in Britain, even by the British working people, unemployed as a result of the cotton shortage during the Civil War?
