At today´s Koninginnedag (queenday) parade in Apeldoorn a car drove into a crowd watching the queen and other members of the royal family drive by metres away.
The car drove at high speed through the barriers and the crowd injuring 23 (6 severe) and killing 2. The mayor of Apeldoorn, Fred de Graaf, was overheard by a local TV
station saying that this must have been intentional and not an accident. The police are investigating.
According to eye witnesses police had fired shots at the car, and the driver was unconcious as he drove into the crowd. However, details are still very sketchy. An official press conference is expected in the next few minutes.
The queen was nearby the accident as it happened. She and the rest of the dignitaries are taken into safety at the nearby palace "Het Loo". The festivities in Apeldoorn have been cancelled. Festivities in the rest of the country continue as planned.
