How Is Internet Explorer 8?

Wed May 06, 2009 5:15 am

I just got a update alert from the Microsoft Update site (the high priority type) for Internet Explorer 8. I was wondering if anyone who has IE8 can tell me how it is. Does it have any bugs? Is it better or improved from IE7?

I have found it more stable than 7. The accelerators feature is really helpful, as well as the search box. Unlike IE7, I'm actually *using* the search box due to the ability to quickly switch between Google/Wikipedia/Amazon/etc. Performance wise it's about the same as most other recent browsers. Overall a worthwhile upgrade, especially if you're still using IE6.

Thanks for your review. I didn't want to install IE8 and find it had bugs or was worse than what I use now (IE7).

I'm still using IE7, I installed the new version a couple weeks ago and had some problems loading my company's websites, I cold log on but it would give me an error, then two days ago a coworker could not even open the websites, it said that the page was not found or something like that. I uninstalled it and reinstalled IE7 and its working without issue now.

I know it is a problem with the website, but I didnt have the chance to fully test it as I uninstalled it as soon as I realized the problem, it might have other issues... who knows.

In before all the "switch to Firefox" and "just buy a Mac" posts that are sure to follow.

Did you or your co-worker try compatibility mode - http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/200...ntroducing-compatibility-view.aspx ? I've had problems with a couple of sites since installing IE8, but they are ones that didn't play well with IE7, either.

My opinion is that it's a worthy upgrade from IE7. As my fellow PDX'er reported the search functionality is much improved and the accelerators are a cool feature. The tab handling is also very well done. It seems more stable and a bit peppier than IE7. All browsers have their strengths and weaknesses, and I don't think there are any features compelling enough to convince a a Firefox or Chrome user to switch.
