Happy Armed Forces Day
to all Anet Veterans.
May 16, 1944, Captain Tom. W. Overton was shot down in the South Pacific Ocean on his 38th combat mission. He was strafing a beach in his Douglas A-20 Havoc and took heavy ground fire. He either was going right and crash land in the jungle or left and crash land in the ocean. The jungle killed most the pilots that took that option, so he opted for a water landing. The crash broke his 5 point harness and he went forward cutting his right eye and swelling it shut. He dove down in 30 feet of water and rescued his gunner that was shot and in shock. Later, my grandfather received a Silver Star for the rescue. It took 4 hours for a Navy PBY to pick them up.
I appreciate everyone that served in the military and thought I'd share this information on Armed Forces Day.
