How Do You Know Your Facebook Friends?

Fri May 22, 2009 10:27 pm

OK, so I was a bit bored tonight and started to think about how I met/know my facebook friends. I don't have a huge number of friends on there (compared to some people I know!), so it was a fairly easy task for me to break them down into categories. I'm curious to see how others compare (percentages not compulsory, neither is using the same categories!)...

I currently have a total of 88 friends, who can be broken down as follows:

Family - 7 (7.95%)
From airliners.net - 5 (5.68%)
From other websites - 7 (7.95%)
Old school friends - 21 (23.86%)
Friends that I have worked with - 37 (42.05%)
Friends of friends - 4 (4.55%)
Random adds - 4 (4.55%)
Other friends - 3 (3.41%)

If you're bored too, have a think about yours!! Big grin

Everyone on my FB are only the people I know real well, with exceptions of maybe 1 or 2 people. I just don't add anyone to my FB. I have to really trust certain people before they are added to my FB because I have family AND co-workers on it. I don't tolerate drama, inappropriate stuff or any BS on it.

I recently trashed my MySpace last week. It was no real use to me at all since I am never over there. MySpace......just didn't do it for me.

I currently have 248 friends. Around 10-15 are from A.net, and the rest are from school, or girls who I thought were cute and lived in my town.  silly

All but 28 of the 325 on my list are family, friends for a long time, or friends from school. Of the 28, almost all of them are either professional contacts with whom I occasionally keep in touch or friends or family of other friends who I met and talked with. There are only two people on the list with whom I do not believe I have ever talked (another Aston Villa fan and a student member of the New York State Bar Association).

I've got 226ish on my FB. I would guess 88% from school, 2% family, and 10% coworkers. Its a good way to catch up and converse about the good old days.

Church (including youth group and tech team), relatives, friends from school (current and former), a.netters, Counter-Strike clan members...

I am very strict when it comes to adding people. If I don't know you, you're not coming in.

I have around 200 friends on FB, all but a few are people I know in real life. Most are university friends, class mates, people from the student radio station, and the next big group I suppose are old friends from high school.

I've got 95 friends on Facebook and it breaks down to:

Family - 10
From airliners.net - 40
People I went to school with - 14
Friends I know from something else - 31 (football/rowing/flight schools/work etc.)

Out of these 95, I have personally met 78 of them.

I don't do much with my facebook account though, I use the Dutch equivalent of it much more often.

140 friends broken down into the following.

20% A.net
20% Flyertalk
6% work
4% school
35% sport/sailing
8% relatives
7% randoms

a.net could have been 21% but you can't count deleted a.net accounts, or can you.

To me a Friend is someone who you can trust & is there at all times [Good/bad].
The rest are just collegues/acquantices.

I have just two friends from decades ago & hundreds of collegues.

While I was compiling my list I wondered: what is the definition of a facebook friend; should it be one that you talk to regularly or someone that you have met in the last year, should you add friends on facebook until you have met them. What happens if your friend died; and you didn't or couldn't go to their funeral, should you really add them as a friend.

I think the bigger question is what makes an actual friend rather than what makes a facebook friend. Facebook is generally just a bit of fun and a good way of keeping up with people you don't see very often (whether that's by consequence or by choice!), but personally I don't give any more consideration to it than that. It has its good points (I've actually used it to get in touch with old friends that I had lost contact with) and bad points (a very good friend of mine deleted me as a friend as he took exception to one of my status updates. I had mentioned something that he believed to be a private matter between he and I - we're still "actual" friends though!).

I generally draw the line at accepting friend requests from total strangers though. Yes I have friends on there that I have never met, but generally there is some kind of connection as in they are the friend of a friend, I know them from a.net etc., etc.

And this may sound like an inappropriate thing to say in response to your post BNE, but I probably wouldn't consider adding a friend who had passed away!!  Wink

I basically divided my friends into 2 groups. I've got people on my FB that are friends that I see and talk to on a weekly basis. The other group is people, old friends that I've lost touch with who I used to talk to daily. There are some mostly older friends who aren't into computers who will probaly never get on FB. I think FB has made me more appreciative of my friends.

95% are friends, most of those I would say I've known over 20 years and several of whom were real blasts from the past and excellent to be back in touch. The other 5% family. However, I have no personal info such as relationship status or anything else available for anyone to view. I cannot believe how much stuff people put on there - an identity thief's dream IMHO. I have "suggested" to my niece and nephew, both teenagers, to calm down the bad language and not to post every last thing they're up to on it. Like "Got really hammered last night. Think I'll pull a sickie." Great plan, especially when you have people from work as friends on there! Doh....
