Memorial Day 2009 (USA)

Mon May 25, 2009 9:09 pm

In the United States, today is Memorial Day. It is a day marked by BBQ's, picnics, parades, and for a lot of people, the end of a three day weekend and the unofficial beginning of summer.

But this day actually has a much more somber purpose. It is on this day that we pause to reflect upon the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform who have died in defense of the United States in wars or other military service, including those who have yet to return.

I would like to thank my father, a LTJG aboard USS Connolly (DE-306) in the Pacific theatre of WWII.

Thank you, Dad, for surviving a Kamikaze attack, a shelling, multiple torpedoes, a hurricane, Midway, and Iwo Jima so that I could know life.

May the brave men and women in uniform today fight for just cause, to secure the blessings of liberty to those of us at home, and to uphold the Constitution. To all of them, come home safely.
