Venezuela&Bolivia Supplying Uranium To Iran?

Tue May 26, 2009 7:44 am

According to an Associated Press article, Venezuela and Bolivia are supplying Iran with uranium for its nuclear program, according to a secret Israeli report obtained today by The Associated Press.

"The two South American countries are known to have close ties with Iran, but this is the first allegation that they are involved in the development of Iran's nuclear program, considered a strategic threat by Israel. The report concludes, "Since Ahmadinejad's rise to power, Tehran has been promoting an aggressive policy aimed at bolstering its ties with Latin American countries with the declared goal of 'bringing America to its knees.'"

RE: Venezuela&Bolivia Supplying Uranium To Iran?

Hmm, in this case I would like to get that info from another source, a source that has less vetted interest.

Uranium is always shrouded in secrecy and creates a lot of attention.
Flashback - Iraq was supposed to have bought Uranium from Niger, that was the major reason for the US to invade Iraq or the smoking gun as it was called.
There were no uranium from Niger in Iraq of course, it was all fabricated.

However the Niger story sounded more plausible than a story saying the sellers are Venezuela and Bolivia. Both these nations have not been able to produce enough uranium to sell previously and I doubt Bolivia has managed to take that step the last year without significant outside help.

Its undisputed that Iran has uranium mines that can produce uranium, not enough for them to run their nuclear plants but enough for weapons?
Iran says so, the rest of us don't know. Personally i doubt it. Enough to build 10 bombs perhaps but after that it would take a long time before they mine enough uranium to build more bombs.

They are however relying on Russia for the first of their planned 21 nuclearplants. Russia has promised it will deliver the nuclear fuel thats needed. Dont need to siphon to much of this away to keep the centrifuges running...

At the moment eleven countries is supplying 97%+ of the worlds uranium so its not easy to find supplies from other nations than these eleven.
Even if they get supplies from Venezuela and Bolivia that wouldnt account for many tonnes and thus making such a project rather pointless.
Venezuela and Bolivia isnt exactly major uranium producers even though they have uranium projects slowly coming online. Russia and Venezuela signed an agreement regarding development of Venezuelas uranium mines and nuclear plants in Venezuela not to long ago.

Irans first nuclearplant is set to come online this autumn and it was built by and will be run by Russians. They announced that Russia would supply Bushehr (the nuclear plant) with nuclear fuel for at least 10 years.
Rosatom, Russias nuclear company, hopes to win a contract to build more reactors in Iran (Interfax, February 25).

Iran bought thousands of tonnes of uranium from South Africa a long time ago and thats what they have been enriching so far.

If Iran were to buy uranium they would start by asking their neighbours. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and some of Irans other close neighbours sits on 25% of the worlds uranium supplies.
Other less stable nations like DR Congo also sits on major supplies. Dr Congo is the country suspected of sending uranium to North Korea. With the country is a state of permanent civil war; controls and regulations isn't easily enforced there.
DR Congo was also were the US uranium in the WWII bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki came from.

I see no real point for Iran to buy from South America and I find it difficult to believe that Venezuela can produce enough uranium for Iran, the same goes for Bolivia that should be even further away from producing high quantities of uranium.

At the moment I put this news from a secret Israeli source in the same basket as the so called smoking gun with uranium from Niger to Iraq. Disinformation by someone that wants to achieve a different goal.

Spot on MS, this and many other points. Begins to look as if Curveball must still be gainfully "employed".

Not only that, Iran itself produces enough U a year to keep a modest bomb program going by enriching U if that is what it wanted to do, but NOT enough to run power reactors. So oddly enough if the report was true, it would support the Iranian story of power reactors rather than a bomb program.

But then again MillwallSean, we must not expect too much logic to be around the problem of Iran - whatever it happens to be! I think it begins to look as if Israel rather wants Ahmad to be re-elected, maybe they think he is an easier opponent than someone who is a bit less eccentric????
