Netherlands Beat England At Cricket

Fri Jun 05, 2009 8:05 pm

Opening game of the twenty20 World Cup and there is a major shock. Netherlands have beaten England! More impressive is the most of the Dutch team is actually Dutch, with 3 or 4 being professional players.

Time to give the England team some waccy-baccy to play like them.

Just following in the rich pattern of sports that the English have started, spread the word round the world and only to find the rest of the world better! I daresay an American side could have beaten England tonight.

I refer the honourable gentlemen to the reply I gave some moments ago in reply 2!

Not the 1st time the Dutch have beaten England. 1st time up was 1989, but officially it was an England XI but it did have Test players named in it, and then in 1993. The Dutch have had some good players (Roland Lefebvre is their best native player I believe - he played for Somerset, was particularly effective in the one-day game - his best bowling was 7 for 15 against Devon). There's a fair number of European countries who do play it. I wish the Danes had maintained their progress (Ole Mortensen is perhaps the best Mainland continental player to have had English county experience - he was at Derbyshire; the only other notable Dane I can think if is Soren Henriksen who was at Lancashire - can't remember if he went to Derbyshire).
But the side the world should look out for is the Afghanistan side that have come from literally nothing to be the 13th best in the world.

England aren't the only team of note to be beaten by The Netherlands, South Africa lost to them in a 50 over match some years ago.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I was at Lords last night and credit to the Dutch, they played brilliantly. England as usual do the customary thing of wandering into a game against perceived lesser opposition and thinking that through the course of the innings just being better will win us the match. Of course this may well work in a 50 over match but in a T20 where margins are so small anything can happen and it did. Go on the Dutch I'll be supporting you at Lords on Tuesday against Pakistan!

Well Scotland are playing very well against NZ right now. Lets see what the response by NZ looks like.

One question though: Why didn't they just abandon the game, rather than shortening it to a ridiculous 7 overs per side?

Will there be a better innings than Gayle's? The distance off these bats is close to lunatic. Has the ball ever been out in the road before? And the picture of Ponting and Bing looking bewildered was one to preserve. I don't know that Bing was bowling that badly either.

Well Aussies better win against SL today! An early exit from this tournament will make the wait for Ashes very agonising!

Why does Scotland even have a cricket team? It's the most boring game in the world, and we're even worse at it than we are at football!
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

Me too! Just a shame we bombed so hard in the recent ICC World Cup Qualifier, we didn't win a single game  Sad

Makes me wonder if it's too late to persuade Amjad Khan to make a return to the Danish team Big grin

England had made through. Australia being out is quite a change from a few years ago. Tomorrow's match between Netherlands and Pakistan should be interesting too. The way they have been playing I wouldn't be surprised if Pakistani team gets knocked out too.

You just posted this while I was editing my reply  Smile I wouln'dt be surprised if that happens. Younis Khan's dismissive attitude hints at what the team really thinks about the T20 format.

It'd be nice if Amjad could return to play for Denmark, but now he's played for England 'a full test playing nation' then he cant switch back IIRC.  confused

I'm off to Lords again today and I'll be hoping that The Netherlands beat Pakistan and then just soaking up the NZ v SA game that should be a cracker.

Is it similar in proportion of US beating Netherlands in soccer?

Netherlands beating England in Cricket is like Netherlands beating the US in Baseball or American Football..

As I have said before, Ricky P is more attractive in defeat than in victory. SL was always going to be a problem. Mendis must have been bowling hand grenades. Good to see Sanggakara batting so well after that terrorist incident, and all credit to Bayliss too.

Not if Afridi has one of his ON days!!! And he did, just in case anyone thinks I am claiming crystal ball stuff.

Well I've just pulled myself away from the TV. Pakistan surprisingly managed to come up with the goods to knock the Netherlands out. Nevertheless, I have to say, their fielding was atrocious and their batting mediocre. Two dropped catches, an easy run-out opportunity and then you have the five dropped against England the other day. The Dutch deserved to go through on merit alone.

Well that was a tense match, after South Africa's dismal 128/7 I thought New Zealand would walk it but some determined bowling and fielding left NZ requiring 4 runs off the last ball to win, which they didn't get, finishing on 127/5.
