Should I Buy The Itouch Now, Or Wait?

Sat Jun 06, 2009 5:14 am

I am really thinking of buying the Itouch, but a lot of my friends have told me to wait a few more months for the next Itouch.

What do you guys think? Should I wait for the next Itouch even though I want one really bad, or should I just go for the one out now? And does anyone really know when the next Itouch will be released and what new features have been rumored?

what's an itouch?

But seriously, it is a lot of money. I would have been nuts to spend 500 bucks on something like that when i was a student.

i would wait until after WWDC next week to see if they say anything.

I have an iTouch 2G and its probably the best gadget I've ever bought! On top of that, I bought mine, a 32gb one for $359 delivered last Dec yet the cheapest they go for even now is $10 more so I'm very happy. The upcoming 3.0 patch will apparently make bluetooth available too so its not like its old technology. I've read that the possible inclusion to the next gen will probably be a camera but how good a camera would they be willing to put in it and since I also have a smartphone with a 2mp camera in it I wouldnt expect any possible camera in the next one to be that much better, so I personally wouldn't wait to probably pay a lot more money for not much more extras in comparison to the 2g version.

itouch! A word that mistakenly represents the iPod Touch.

If I were you, would wait for WWDC (Apple's World Wide Developer's Conference) and see what happens. It starts next Monday and there should be an announcement of whatever new thing then plan to bring out... so.. .just give it one more week.

This is one of my recent pet peeves - it's called the iPod Touch. "itouch" sounds like you're a 3 year old asking for permission to touch something.

It is almost certain that a new iPhone generation will be presented next week, which will be followed by a new iPod Touch. Among the expected changes is another doubling of the memory capacity (to 32GB on the iPhone, 64GB on the iPod Touch), but other changes are being rumoured as well.

As the others have said, I'd wait.

So Big grin. Didn't it happen twice? With the first and second generations? I could have sworn it has.

An improved battery would be welcome - and before you ask, I use my iPhone quite sparingly.

I'm going to get an iPhone, but I'm waiting for the next generation to be released. How much more expensive is it likely to be than the current iPhone? Or will it be the same price since it is just replacing it?

Apple usually keeps the price points of its products the same or similar and changes the features instead. They could of course decide to opt for greater differentiation and offer three different memory sizes instead of just two (8/16GB -> 8/16/32GB) to reach farther down to a market segment they hadn't targeted yet.

Thanks. I guess it does make sense for them to keep the pricing the same since they are competing with other smart phones which are also being upgraded at a similar rate..

I wouldn't be surprised if they did release a 32GB iPhone as I can imagine there would be demand for it. Some people go crazy with the amount of music, TV, film they put onto their iPods!

Yeah, but without an increase in battery life, the 32GB is practically pointless. I wouldn't call myself a very heavy user, but I do send SMS and make phone calls throughout the entire day on my iPhone. Very occasionally use the internet. Together with this, my bluetooth is also on. The phone lasts barely a day. I can't even imagine playing music on it. Battery will be drained SO fast.

On a side note, I wonder if the Palm Pre that was released yesterday has lived up to the hype. The phone looks super cool!

The two have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

I've got an iPod Touch 32GB. Not because I need that much memory to have enough music for one battery run, but simply to have (almost!) all my music with me at all times without any need to swap it in and out. If there had been a 64GB one at the time, I would definitely have gotten that and battery usage would have been exactly identical, I would just not have had to leave out some of my music.

With the newer flash chips we'll most probably see a 32GB iPhone and at long last a 64GB iPod Touch (the iPhone needs the space for the cellphone electronics which the iPod Touch has available for more memory).

Battery consumption roughly in the order of depletion:

- display backlight (the brighter it is, the more power it draws - use the automatic setting)
- display 3D acceleration (primarily in games)
- cell radio (the weaker the connection, the more power it draws)
- WiFi radio (the weaker the connection, the more power it draws)
- BlueTooth radio
- music playback

Setting Mail to a very short polling interval will use the cell radio a lot and thus deplete the battery relatively quickly. Using a longer interval or using push notification can help there.

No. Playing music.uses very little power (unless you're trying to beat your ears to a pulp at top volume). Even the smallest iPods last a long time on much smaller batteries.

Mine is already on the lowest possible setting for brightness.
Cell connection is great all over SFO.
NEVER use WiFi
Blue Tooth is always on - I am aware is drains quite a lot
No music at all

I realize that the same battery life in all players won't be a deciding factor in getting or not getting higher GBs but....

What I AM saying is that with the current battery, (all my friends who have the iPhone have the same battery life) using the iPhone as an iPod apart from it's other features, primary the phone and texting isn't very practical. Everyone I know has iPods to go with the iPhone because the battery simply does not perform!

Almost no power is used for music. I know when I use my iTouch on the plane and I get the alert for 20% battery life left I'll switch over to music and be able to listen for an extremely long time before I even get the 10% warning.

I got a nearly brand new one, 1gen, 16gig for €200, now almost a year ago. And I'm very very happy with it. The screen is big enough to keep watching series enjoyable, the wi-fi is great and it's just so easy to use. If you compare it with other devices, it's really ahead of its time.

If I were you, I'd wait. As for me, I'm probably buying the iPhone when I'm back in Germany, despite the obligation for a T-Mobile contract. And for my own iPod Touch 2G, I'm waiting for iPhone OS 3.0, because it will unlock the iPod Touch 2G's integrated bluetooth chip for general use (previously, it could only be used for the Nike+Ipod system IIRC).

Yeah, that's an iPod Touch, for the iPhone it's different because it does things that the Touch isn't capable of i.e. texting, calling, surfing on 3G (opposed to Wi-Fi), so the music listening does end up taking a toll on the already well-known (look at ANY review site) lack of battery life.

Quoting Klaus (Reply 20):

They truly do, which makes it very inconsistent.

Music listening uses a lot less power than for instance the cellphone radio or the display backlight, so it doesn't make much of a difference. Just try it!

Quoting Aeroflot777 (Reply 24):

Of course. Usage patterns and external circumstances (signal strength etc.) vary considerably, and consequently so does the resulting battery endurance.

By the way: The signal quality indicator does not necessarily tell you about the signal strength – it is quite possible that the phone is powering up its transmitter to the highest level but then at least manages to get good two-way connection quality. The number of bars on top of the display does not necessarily correlate directly with the power draw. And as I said above: The various settings can have a major impact on battery endurance through increased data transmission volume.

And, of course, UMTS with the current chipsets is still considerably more power-hungry than plain GSM. That will probably ease somewhat with the new generation, but the higher transmission speed will still not be for free.

I've heard all kinds of experiences with endurances between less than a day and a week between charges. It depends.

I'd wait for sure, I bought a first gen 16G Ipod touch for 400 bucks, (Haven't regretted the purchase for one second) but a month after I got it, the second generation was launched, with better features, and exactly 100 bucks cheaper!

Well, the tea leaves had it right, apparently.

Apple - iPhone 3GS

The new iPhone 3GS has indeed received a much faster chip set (higher UMTS speed, about double the CPU speed) and at the same time the battery endurance was apparently increased.

Memory capacity was doubled as expected (now 16/32GB) and it now has magnetometer (compass) for navigation and an autofocus camera with increased resolution (now 3MP) and better low-light sensitivity.

In order to address thriftier customers they keep the "old" iPhone 3G around for half the price as well (with 8GB).

The new generation of the iPod Touch which is to be expected soon will almost certainly inherit the faster CPU and the higher memory capacity (meaning 32/64GB, possibly also still a 16GB model); Most of its other improvements will probably be due to the new OS version, however, which the older iPhones and iPod Touches will also be able to use.

You'll have to ask your network provider. Apple doesn't really control this aspect.
