Cruise Ship Thread 2009 News+ New Launches

Sat Jun 06, 2009 11:26 pm

Ok so I know quite a few are interested in Cruise Ships so I thought Id set up a thread to chat about new ships and innovations.

I know some prefer small and intimate whilst others prefer mega liners. Here we can discuss all and share experiences.

The latest news is that Celebritys Equinox has come out of the ship yard. Here are some photos ::

She's not the most beautiful liner, is she? A rather angular forward hull, and a brutally styled stern, and also apparently very little to break up the monotony of the rows of balconies. Not only that, but that rather blunt bow suggests to me two words: car ferry!

Admittedly, the word 'graceful' is not one that is particularly pertinent to a lot of modern ships, especially the larger ones. Whilst I appreciate that aesthetics are not especially important given that the passengers will largely (a) not care how it looks and (b) be experiencing the ship from the inside, not the outside, so there's little point in wasting space on, say, a longer bow or a more attractively tiered stern, some ships just seem a little too far in the 'apartment block' direction for my liking.

This one looks pretty good I think.

I'm excited to try out the new Norwegian Epic next summer. The shape of the ship is pretty hideous but the decor/amentities seem awesome

Whatever happened to styling on a cruise ship. These are nothing but "big-box" cruise ships. Why would I want to spend a week on something that looks like a skyscraper laying on its side? I'll take an older ship any day over these eyesores.

I have to say I was shocked when I saw it , the interiors will be amazing though and NCL usually dont dissapoint .

I like all kinds of ships , large and small. I was on one last week that takes under 150 passengers. The photos can be seen here ::

Not really. That design is traditionally meant to ride the waves.
An axe bow would be used to 'cut' threw a wave.
Google "Predator Yacht" for an example.
It's only a matter of time before we see them on cruise ships...

Is that configuration an afterthought???
It's horrific looking (not that it matters once your onboard) But those cabins are going to sway like crazy in a moderate sea.

I see the new floating apartment blocks all the time in Monaco and Villefranche. They are not aesthetically pleasing to the eyes to say the least. The QM2 and QV are still acceptable though.

I still much prefer the old liners. France and QE2 were my top favourites of all. They were so incredibly glamorous and stylish.

Too top heavy like all cruise ships built nowadays. From all the large new built´s of the past ten years, only Queen Mary 2 can be regarded as visually pleasing to me. There are some pretty ships among the smaller cuisers though, like the Europa, which independently is regarded to be the best cruiseship in the world.
Queen Victoria and its near sisters from the Vista class ( operating for Costa, Holland-America and Carnival) are ok, as is the Carnival Destiny class (some of which are also operating for Costa), but the rest of the big ships are just boxy, top-heavy swimming hotels I couldnt care less for. The Equinoxe and Solstice with their tiny funnels look stupid to me, as do the latest Aida´s.

I know we are of the same taste here! I would add the original Queen Mary. That for me was the most majestic ship ever - she still is in fact, as, thank god, she´s the sole survivor of a grand era.

I like cruising Cunard-style the most anyway. Red, white and black ships, I dont need more.
I´m not much in danger to board the ugly pure white block of flats.

Whilst of a much smaller tonnage than some of the megaliners, I think the styling of P&O's Oriana (1995) and Aurora (2000) is quite pleasing for a large ship. A long and sleek bow plus a tiered superstructure around a pool at the stern manage to evoke certain aspects of classic liners, plus also managing quite effectively to mask the size of these ships.

Personally I think Disney Wonder and Magic are by far and away the most visually pleaseing cruise ships to have been launched in the past 20 years. The twin funnels and cruiser stern along with the black hull really make these ships stand out from all the other apartment blocks on a hull.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what the next two Disney ships (Dream & Fantasy) will be like, the first will be launched in 2010.

Yes, how could I forgot about them. Outside design is really fine, apart from the rear upper superstructure behind the funnels. But from what I´ve seen, inside they´re quite tacky.

These two are ok, as are some other ships from the 90s like the Costa Classica.
The ugly topheavy block of flats look started right around the time those two P&O-ships were built.

Apart from the obvious Disney branding they are quite pleasing IMO, a big step up from the extreme tackiness of the average Carnival ship.

Yes, the cruiser stern and pseudo whale back bow set them apart. The dark hull paint at least tries to delineate the hull from the superstructure.

I have a huge soft spot for the classic liners. But compared to the Normandie, the Queen Mary looks like an aging dowager---and nothing more than a larger Mauretania (but I def see your point in comparison to the ferry-like ships being built today).

And that site means what?

Why should I care about ugly trawlers?

Back to the cruise ships...

Those boats are designed for calmer waters of the Caribbean, or waters close to shores. Cutting through waves? Not so much. Ocean liners cut through waves. Ocean liners could go anywhere in the world, take on all sorts of seas, and come out ok. You wouldn't take one of these new hotels on water on North Atlantic crossings. At least with the Queen Mary 2, it actually looks like it could handle heavy seas.

Same type of hull design my friend. That ship could survive 40-50ft swells if need be. And if did take on a rogue wave of 80-100ft, I am sure she would survive as such standards exist for ships like that.

Sources please. Those ships travel across the oceans to relocate to other ports. I am not buying into that as that ship is capable of taking a jorney across the atlantic. If you do not believe me, my friends dad is Bruce Niernberg, a former cruise ship exec.

Completely agree, you just have to look at the service speeds of the QE2 and QM2 compared to all the other cruise ships to realise that there is a significant difference between the hull design of an Ocean Liner compared to a cruise ship. I wouldn't want to do a winter crossing of the Atlantic in a cruise ship whereas I would have no quarms about booking pssage on the QM2.

The ships are quite capable of crossing the ocean, but they are hardly built for it. A purpose built cruise liner like the QM2 is faster and more stable in the rough North Atlantic, and her hull is stronger to withstand the constant pounding of repeated crossings, unlike the the cruise ships that would require a great deal more maintenance and repair if they constantly sailed rough seas.

Just like comparing a 757 to a 777--both can do oceanic flights, but one is more comfortable for passengers and more efficient for doing the trip day in and day out.

While the Queen Mary might have looked looked a bit oldfashioned next to the Normandie (remember she was designed a few years earlier, but delayed due to the economical crisis), the Mary is the sharper, slimmer ship. The Normandie has a rather fat look to her, although some design features were truly beautiful and advanced, so much so that the above-water bow design was copied by the Queen Elizabeth 2.
The QM was an oldfashioned, stately English Lady with a perfect figure, the Normandie a french grand dame in haute couture with too much weight. And while the Normandie´s design was admired by the avantgarde, the passengers preferred the warm charm of the QM. There has never been a more popular ship than the QM in her heydays until the late 50s.

Quoting MadameConcorde (Reply 25):

The Mickey Mouse logo does not fit to the outside of a ship half-copied from old liners, thats for sure. As for the funnel design I think they regard it as modern. in the sense of "better modern and ugly, than oldfashioned and beautiful".

The cluttered funnel look unfortunately is liked by other companies too, look at the awful funnel design of Princess cruises. Horrible.
In general though the Disney ships profile is far above average for current cruisships.

Oh I know. I see far too many of that type down here. I don't like them at all.

Cunardival Vickie and Big Mary still look very good I think. Big Mary is a classic.
She came from Chantiers de l'Atlantique. For me it's a plus (other than those poor folks who got killed falling off the steps).

The new Lizzie will be like Vickie. A "vista" ship. Very similar on the outside.
I guess the interiors will be totally different. She will be down here on her maiden voyage.
I am still convinced that none of the Cunardival Queens will ever surpass QE2.

Yet I thought the original France looked the best of all with her winged funnels. She had sheer beauty and elegance that Ship!  airplane   angel

the Equinox isn't bad, but the Epic, that thing is a design monstrosity. The sad thing is, the same company that probably paid a billion dollars to build that monstosity couldn't seem to find the money to put the Norway back in service after her boiler room explosion, nor can they seem to find the money to refurbish the Big U, arguably the fastest ocean liner ever built and the last true ocean liner to take the blue ribband, with a crossing time of 3 days and just over 10 hours.

I give RCCL some credit for their sleek designs and fast hulls, escpecially with the Vision and Radiance class, i also give Celebrity some credit for the Infinity Class.

What saddens me though is that cruise lines are taking the "cruise" out of cruising in their desire to compete against land based resorts. I really like being at sea, i like being able to experience the ocean and not from fourteen decks up, but then i suppose if the cruise lines did build in free open promenades then there'd be no incentive for people to buy balcony staterooms, so, we get trapped inside what amounts to a foating shopping mall, or we have to experience the sea from fourteen decks up with two thousand of our closest friends roasting their obese, sun block slathered carcasses on deck chairs.

Out of the ships i've been on, my top three, design wise, would have to be the Island Breeze (ex Transvaal Caste, ex Festivale), with it's tiered decks and sleek lines, the Monarch of the Seas and the Finnmarken, which looks like the baby sibling of the world famous Royal Viking Sea, Sky and Star, very classic design.

Finally, i like the original Regal and Crown Princess and their dolphin inspired design.
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

Not sure Silversea is 'luxury at its best' (but certainly at the top!)---Silversea was rated behind both Crystal and Regal in the best cruise line, small ships according to Conde Nast.
The highest rated vessels were:
Seabourn Legend
Paul Gauguin
Seabourn Spirit
Seabourn Pride
Silver Cloud

I like Crystal, one of my friends works for them and I have been on the lovely Serenity which I loved.

I know we are of the same taste here! I would add the original Queen Mary. That for me was the most majestic ship ever

I'd say it's either the Normandie or the original France. The French did and do have some great designers.

Meanwhile the Celebrity Equinox is on her way to the North Sea for her maiden voyage.

Has anyone been on the Sea Princess? My parents are going round the Caribbean on it for 15 days in January. My mother gets a bit sea sick but they are booking an inside cabin, which should be ok for her. It's also their first time on a cruise, bit of a treat for themselves as they celebrate their semi-retirement.

Celebritys Equinox

Nice ship...But I'll be honest, the first thing that caught my eye wasn't it, but the building! That thing is massive!

Is that another ship I see under construction alongside the Equinox?

It's gotta be disorienting inside that space...

France, the First Love of my life!
I have seen a lot of her during my young years on harbour and at sea. There was nothing more beautiful to my eyes. Inside she was really to die for... and the winged funnels...  spin

Then came Concorde and the QE2... the Transatlantic Dream Team!  angel

There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

Sigh...

If any of the designers from the 1920s through 1960s are still alive, I'll bet they shake their heads in disgust of what the modern "ocean liner" looks like.
This isn't where I parked my car...

NCL Epic is so ugly I really happy that the contract for the second one was cancelled, having one travesty like this floating around is bad enough.....

I may be unpopular (at least within this thread), but I couldn't care less what the ship looks like from the outside.. I am rarely going to be looking at it.

I care more about comfort, amenities & service. And having looked at the spec for the ship, I think the ship will offer plenty in those terms.

True I think in real life it will look better all painted up etc.. there is no denying the onboard facilities will be great. The ice bar looks cool ( pardon the pun ) .

Like I always say there is a cruise ship for everyone. Just like hotels. Some people like small and intimate and others like mega and frills. I personally like all types and enjoy them for what they are.
