A.netters On Twitter

Mon Jun 08, 2009 10:21 am

Post your account, follow away.

I'm http://twitter.com/OffshoreAir

I do post a bit about aviation, usually trying to give a little insight into different articles I find from a few news outlets, but it is mostly a great way to keep in contact with friends without all the petty applications that facebook has and the annoying myspace pages.

Post away!

P.S. don't add or follow to advertise to or to spam accounts

Still? Actually, I think it's the form of social network with the possibly brightest future. Facebook is getting annoying with all the apps and quizes - Twitter is a text messaging community. Exactly what me and my friends needed.

It has a low user retention rate... much lower than MySpace & Facebook... it'll die off. Who really needs to know exactly what someone is doing at that very moment... or more importantly, who cares?!

I know, but I can't understand why. Facebook is really getting on my nerves lately, but I still remain in there as I have 250+ contacts which I don't have on Twitter. Probably I'd just like to have a "stripped down" Facebook, without the dumb apps and quizes... oh well

I use Twitter to keep in touch with those contacts that I consider to be the somewhat "closer" friends. It's nice to know how everyone's doing when there's no time to call everyone all the time. But it's true, Twitter probably doesn't work as well as a social network with less "close" contacts.

I think you are missing the point of twitter then. I don't constantly post that I am doing this, or I am doing that, or this is what I'm eating right now, and so on. In fact, when I notice people doing that, I usually stop following them. Twitter is a better way for me to keep in touch with friends, post links, keep people updated on my life in Germany, post pictures, and even network in the aviation industry a bit, as well a with hobbies of mine. I can't stand myspace, I can't stand facebook, yet the simplicity of twitter is much more my speed: no terrible bulletins, no top friends, no stupid surveys - its not a popularity contest participated by mostly teenagers. Its a simple interface and concept that appeals to me better than the other social networking sites.

There actually is a way to block all Facebook test results from your feed. If you've got Firefox, you can install Greasemonkey and run a custom userscript that rids you of all the annoying test results. Details here.

It has a lot of uses. I recently wrote and app to generate web buzz and increase page rank through twitter and it worked like a charm. The thing with hardcore twitterers is that mundane "all about me updates" stop quickly and it's more about viral info dissemination. Good stuff propagates, shit does not.

Wrong. the Twitter base model foundation will never change. The data it generates provides scope for feature and info growth etc but all of that is (will be) built on top of twitter not into twitter.

Facebook said the same thing, and look where it is at now. Twitter will eventually go the route Facebook is at now. Never say never....

I still question what the hell Twitter is anyway.....

I didn't want to get into the software side of Twitter but it might help you understand my position. Think of it as an infrastructure e.g. the USPS, sure there multiple offerings, multiple diversified services etc but the core function remains getting a packet from A to B. That will never change. It's kind of hard to explain, think as abstractly as possible. I use it but for work only.

It does not matter. Who cares about the software side. Twitter can change to adapt to the needs of their audience, just like MySpace and Facebook. That is not very difficult to understand, Yowza....

Well by ignoring the software side you fail to understand how Twitter positively impacts page ranks and word indexing through meta crawlers. This results in site visibility improvements in the region of 2700%. That = big money if leveraged correctly.

Quoting AirframeAS (Reply 23):

That's the thing you're not grasping it would not be "changing" - changing implies mutual exclusivity. Twitter can continue to be what it is now but add things. The core of what it "is" by the very nature of the product can not change. You can build a bungalow or a skyscraper on a given plot of land but you can't move the location of the plot.

Quoting AirframeAS (Reply 23):

Apparently it is...

No it doesn't, but since I'm failing (epically) to communicate the software basis of the product and you likely don't have a SW engineering degree I'll let it sit. What I will say is that the basic twitter service that is offered today will be offered for the foreseeable future. Since you think not let's agree to revisit this thread in say three years and I will guarantee you the basic service still exists and is the same.

I could care LESS about the software thing, who cares! It is moot.

Like any other company, I am sure you have filled out one of these, Twitter will sooner or later have their users fill out a "Tell us about your experience with Twitter, how can we improve the website". A.net has done this, Facebook has done this and so has MySpace. Airlines have done this with their FF base. Twitter WILL do it, too.

With you, Mr. YOWza...talking to you is like having a conversation with a brick wall, sorry to say.

Sometimes, you have to consider how the website/company will improve its services in the foreseeable future to help improve customer service.... This is what you are NOT grasping.
