Anyone 30 Or Older Remember Stussy?

Mon Jun 08, 2009 5:08 pm

Here's a question for older A-netters (30+), how many of you wore Stussy in the '90s?.. I sure as hell did, I had a blue Stussy Star hat that looked a lot like the Dallas Cowboys symbol. I loved that hat, I had like 3 or 4 Stussy hats, and several Stussy Tee shirts and Sweat Shirts.

I definitely remember Stussy! Most of the tshirts I wore underneat my high school dress code attire were Stussy t-shirts as well as Yaga. Yet I'm not sure if Yaga was known outside the Houston/Galveston area. The days of of Stussy, Yaga, and Titty Bingo, that just reminds me I've got my 15th HS Reunion coming up!  eek

I never did. Stussy was for preps and I was no prep. The black leather jacket gearhead crowd never wore stuff like that. Another thing we hated were "Mean People Suck decals" and anything with "No Fear" on it. We liked shirts with band names and cars on them.

All the prep kids at work wear Ambercrombie and Hollister stuff. I remember when Ambercrombie & Fitch was a stuffy men's store that sold outdoor wear. They even made hunting jackets.

I believe they were a high-end outdoor fitter, and you could buy shotguns and rifles there as well. Somewhere along the line, something went very, very wrong and now they show male models almost naked on the side of buildings. Bring back the guns!!!  stirthepot

Stussy and Yaga seemed like the same brand that was more into Caribbean beach wear, a bit quasi-Rasta.

Titty Bingo. They're actually a band. They had performed at the International Festival here in Houston and were giving away bumper stickers and you saw cars all over the city with said stickers, along with both "Visualize World Peace!" and "Visualize Swirled Peas!"

Oh yeah ... A&F back in the day. We never had the old school A&F, but there was one in New Orleans while I was doing my undergrad at Tulane. From boring stuff dads to now pre-pubescent preteens.  eek

Never wore it though, wasn't really my thing. I was much more of a skater back in my early teens, and I wore DVS shoes, Element and Zero shirts, and Dickie shorts.

I had a fair bit of Stussy stuff back in the day (early 90's). For a while there it seemed like just about every teenager in Melbourne wore Stussy pants, I even had a pair of grey Stussy shorts as part of my school uniform. Couldn't wear the pants to school as we had to wear grey slacks.... but the shorts were OK for summer. Ypu can still buy Stussy branded stuff here, mainly underwear, but some of the tshirts have come back as 'retro' items.

Hey that's funny, I was just about to post a similar thread about the brand Off Shore. Does anyone remember ? I tried to do some research on google but didn't find anything except from their logo... I remember buying a jacket in 1998 or 1999 and that's the last time I've ever heard of the brand. Any info will be gladly appreciated  Smile
Back to Stussy, I do remember the brand as well (I'm 34), but never had anything from that brand. It wasn't popular in France and I guess only sold in select stores and/or big cities...

You missed out they were great. I had some old A&F stuff back in the days when it was stuffy. I like Brooks Brothers today, but I don't have the kind of job where I could wear it. Probably Brooks Brothers will be all wimpy one day and A&F will go back to being a stuffy mens store.

I don't get the trend at all. I see "thugs" and "gangstas" (the real deal not the fake ones) wearing Dickies all the time. Dickies are work clothes made for work. I am wearing them right now and I am at work! Most thugs and gangstas don't have jobs.

Funny how after high school all that stuff doesn't matter anymore. I would never be friends with nerds in high school, but now I have a lot of friends who were nerds in high school. Nerds usually have good jobs, while a lot of the cool kids turn out to be bums. I see it all the time even today.

I kind of remember that brand. By the late 1990s I was out of style and became a jeans and flannel shirt guy in the winter and shorts and t-shirt guy in the summer. All of my t-shirts had/have beers (mostly cheap), airplanes, cars, tractors, or bars on them. Today I could care less about any kind of style as long as I look somewhat nice. The only fashion I really like is business wear and that stuff doesn't change all that much.

Interesting, more than a few of the girls I knew wore Stussy. But I don't remember girls wearing the other skate brands like Vision or Mossimo. The girls would wear girl versions of surf brands like Rip Curl, Quicksilver & Billabong, Country Road was popular with both sexes here as well, it was seen as 'upscale', usually worn by the rich kids, an aussie version of 'preppy' ($100+ for a glorified sweat top and this was in early 90's dollars.....) I forgot Mambo as well, had a few of their tshirts, works of art, if only I'd kept them.....

Vison Streetwear was cool. I always wearing Vison shoes while riding my Vison Physcostick skateboard when I was 13. Vans shoes were also cool with the skate crowd.

Quoting Melpax (Reply 19):
Mossimo

I was out of the skater thing by the time that was cool. I don't remember skaters wearing that, it was more preppy at my school.

If you want to see what cool skateboarders wore in the late 80s check out the film "Gleaming the Cube" (1989).

When I was a freshman in high school I moved from Denver to St. Louis and the style of clothes kids wore was different. I had a bunch of Vision, T&C, Gotcha, and Quick Silver and quickly found out that nobody in my neighborhood wore that kind of stuff. What was cool in St. Louis was IOU and those stupid Skidz pants (I had both).

Quoting Melpax (Reply 19):
Rip Curl, Quicksilver & Billabong

Those were the cool surfer brands I remember when I lived in Colorado in the 80s. Also we had T&C, Jimmy Z, Gotcha, Body Glove, and Rusty. All those brands came with stickers on the tags and all the cool kids had them stuck on the walls of their rooms.

For anyone who wants to see the cool surfer fashions of the late 80s check out the film "Back to the Beach" (1987).

Another "remember that" question: How wide spread was Squire Shop? I remember them when I was in late grade school and early Junior High. Our nearest mall was about 60 miles away, so we didn't go very often, but I remember I liked the clothes there. There was a Squire Shop in Kennewick, Portland and Bellevue.

For guys there was Structure, liked it the first year they came out, and then not so much afterwards. Always been a GAP kind of guy. Though I like their pieces now, I remember when Banana Republic was more ... jungle-esque, safari inspired than the brand it is today. Along with Stussy, we would also wear those BR graphic tees under our school clothes. I attended an all-guys school and we didn't have a uniform at my school, but we had to wear collared shirts, khaki-type slacks, belt, socks, and dress shoes. The gals across the parking lot had to wear a uniform.

Another blast from the past ... remember Generra? How about those heat-sensitive color-changing t-shirts?

Yeah, I had some friends who were into Megadeth, Pantera, etc. The metalheads and indie-rockers razzed each other plenty at my school, but basically were a united front. And none of us wore Stussy. Big grin

Sorry but brands weren't really an interest of mine when I was like, 5! Big grin

Everybody knew the class of 95 was the class that ruled,

Does it count if you were Middle School class of '95?

Nerds usually have good jobs, while a lot of the cool kids turn out to be bums. I see it all the time even today.

Ha! Good point- I can think of several of my 'cool' HS classmates who are still living at home in their parent's basements... thanks for that ego boost.

I still have a Stussy jacket, picture taken 5 minutes ago:

I bought it 10 or 11 years ago in a shop called "Brothers & Sisters" in Bochum. I paid 599 German Mark (nowadays approx. 300 Euro) for it and it was worth it. I wore it (and still wear it) during a lot of winters and it kept me warm during 4 or 5 snowboard holidays.

Very true.....

They are probably selling a bunch of old stuff that didn't sell 15 years ago.

I saw it again just a week ago. We graduated a bunch of nerds who I would love to drink a beer with one day and there are a bunch of knuckle heads that barely graduated that may be pulling beer cans out of my trash in a few years. I can't knock on knuckle heads too much because I had a 2.0 GPA when I got out of high school and I did just fine at the University.

Lol, proably more than likely true, especially at Chaddy. Most overrated shopping centre in Melbourne, full of wannabees checking out the overpriced stores there. If you go there on a weekend & can find a car park in under 30 minutes you're deserving of a prize of some sort, LOL.

That is horrible. I have been to places like that before and I hate it.
