Are Steam Mops Any Good?

Fri Jun 12, 2009 5:38 am

I am thinking about getting a steam mop.

Are any of the steam mops that are heavily advertised any good? For example, there are 3 models of Shark steam mops. I have also seen the "H2O Steam Mop" advertised on an infomercial, but I am skeptical, after reading lots of negative reviews about it. There are also Bissell and other makes of steam mops.

All of them claim to just use tap water, heat it up into super-hot steam, force it into an absorbable cloth pad, and clean hard floors and carpets (!) to super-cleanness. They claim that steam-cleaning is safer, and more environmentally friendly, and more effective, than regular mops and Swiffer-type mops. Too good to be true?

Are any of these any good?

If so, which would you recommend? Do you have any experiences with them?

Thanks!

While not horrible, they do not seem to be worth the hassle or the investment. I used one my grandmother had purchased for her house and the only real difference between that and a normal mop was the fact that the steam burns if you get to close to it, and whatever you are cleaning gets "disinfected" whatever that means as there is no way to kill all of the germs. The cleaning time in not really faster, and can even be slower when you have to change the pads because they are dirty. They have to cool before you can do it. (and it usually takes several pads to do a house)
Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood.

My wife and I have the Bissell. It is easy to use and does not leave behind the odor of cleaning solutions which are supposed to be pleasant but I find offensive. We have a light-colored linoleum floor in our kitchen (which we hate, but it came with the house and we haven't gotten around to replacing it) which shows dirt very easily. The Bissell gets up dirt other cleaners left behind. Nothing is perfect, but the Bissell is superior to other cleaning methods we have tried.

I have been seeing this advertised here on those ''Informercial'' things. It actually was the first item I have seen that I thought might be useful. Im thinking of getting one myself. I already have a steam cleaner which I use for cleaning grout and joins in the tiles and I find it excellent.

They're far from perfect but we use one on a slate floor in our kitchen. Slate is beautiful for flooring but boy is it a bitch to clean. Even though our steam mop (don't know which brand it is) could be better, it still saves us a lot of time.

Can't comment about the actual use...but the service that cleans my place uses them extensively.
No complaints--everything is clean and shiny. Assume they wouldn't use them if they were difficult or ineffective (?).
Also not sure which model they use---likely some commercial type.
