Calvin Klein Billboard Stirs Controversy In NYC

Mon Jun 15, 2009 4:58 pm

An enormous billboard advertisement for Calvin Klein jeans in Manhattan's East Village neighborhood is stirring all sorts of controversy, with many people claiming it is too vulgar to be shown in a public location. The ad features a topless young woman (nothing shown, due to the position of her arm) making out with two men on a sofa, while another man lies on the floor. Some people say that the young woman looks underage. There also are claims that her presence notwithstanding, the ad is actually homoerotic.

Her parents must be so proud!

To me this ad is the attempt of a fast fading brand to make itself important again. Fail. CK dOne.

I say get over it.

It's an advert, it's not the best in the world, but far from the worst. I don't think of homosexuality when I see it, and even if I did, it wouldn't matter.

No offense caused.

Some people are clutching at straws, there are many models and adult film stars who look underage. Jealousy I think!

Since when is Calvin Klein unimportant?

This ad is fine. People are just being paranoid and I sure don't see how it evokes thoughts of homosexuality!

It had it's moment in the sun but it is not hip (it once was) anymore and it's not an established enough brand like say Burberry to remain resilient. They even have cut price denim these days. When top flight brands start selling lower line products under the same name the end is usually no far away.

As mentioned above, Calvin Klein is a dying brand, even within its previously steadfast "gay community" clientele.

Secondly, the puratanical homophobic religius right-wing members of the American public need to not force their myopic view of morality on the rest of the world. The right wing thought police needs to take a deep breathe and focus on defeating gay marriage propositions around the country...  sarcastic

I don't think it's a particularly great advert myself tbh, infact I prefer the sight of the 3 men and lots of naked flesh, and that alone doesn't really make me suddenly think, "Oh! I need to go out and get some Calvin Klein jeans".
What I don't agree with is the making out between the guy and the girl. Children will see this advert and since they're impressionable, they need to be protected from such images.

I also don't think homosexuality when I see it, now, if the guy under the girl had his head the other way....  Silly

Too true! It always makes me laugh how we try to preserve this image of purity as a country while the porn industry thrives on the backs of suburbian America. Just because an ad shows what people wish they could do doesn't make it wrong.

There is such a double standard in the United States it is nearly sickening. Replies in this thread could explain one reason why. Something akin to "it is sick this young looking woman is making out with two guys with another looking on." And then, these same people that go ape nuts over this, claiming it defiles our society, goes to the nearest "adult" store and purchases DVDs and magazines depicting acts such as these and much more *ahem* "indulgent." Maybe, just maybe, if we igored things like this and explained to our children, if they ever see something like this, our own feelings on this instead of forcing their morality on the rest of us, we could advance ourselves as a society.

I do not care for this picture because it is too busy. There is too much for me to take in all at once. One guy and one girl, sure. Two guys, hell yeah! Two girls, ewwww but acceptable. But, with the couch, and the ugly jeans and the stuff... it is just too much.

I don't see any controversy in that billboard at all.

The only thing I notice about Calvin Klein advertising is that it seems very dated (old) to me. Their campaigns in 2009 are not that different from their campaign in 1992. They have always featured blank, bored-looking models who are sort of posed provocatively, yet they have no sensuality whatsoever.

The same is true of Ralph Lauren. Sailboats. Hamptons, Ivy League. Lacrosse. yawn.

Maybe it's an east coast thing which would explain why I don't get it.
