I Live With Shame... I Have Not Been To....

Mon Jun 15, 2009 6:34 pm

Hi everyone,

YES!!! YES!!! IT'S TRUE, IT'S SHAMEFUL... But the aweful truth is that I have not yet visited my nation's capital, Ottawa. I have been to over 25 other capitals in the world including some of the following:

Bucharest, Romania
Budapest, Hungary
Prague, Czech Republic
Tallinn, Estonia
Helsinki, Finland
Stockholm, Sweden
Riga, Latvia
Seoul, S. Korea
London, England
Dublin, Ireland
Berlin, Germany
Sofia, Bulgaria
Rome, Italy
Zagreb, Croatia
Belgrade, Serbia
Vienna, Austria

... and many more...

Now how on Earth is it possible that I have not visited Ottawa yet? I lived in Ontario (Toronto / Windsor) and haven't had the chance to go yet. I must go this year, even if it means missing out on another European trip.

Has anyone here NOT been to their nation's capital?

(Disclaimer: To my defense, I have dual Romanian / Canadian citizenship and I have been to Bucharest, which is my home country's capital... The first capital I've visited though was Budapest (since I grew up in Transilvania, closer to the Hungarian border)

I've been to DC, but I've never been to NYC, which isn't the capital but it's certainly the most visited city in this country, and literally everyone else I know has been there and I'm fairly well traveled, so it's definitely a sore spot.

Yup, I've never been to Ottawa and I even lived in Kitchener for 5 years as a kid. I have dual citizenship as well (Canadian/German) and I've never been to Berlin either. However, being born in West Germany (when there were two of course) I did go to Bonn.

So, no you're not alone. But to tell you the truth, I have no desire to visit Ottawa whatsoever, there's alot more of Canada I'd rather see and visit.

I've been to my country's capital thousands of times. It would be bad if I hadn't considering it's only 30 minutes drive away. Also, my dad+step-family live in Edinburgh, so it would be even more bad if I hadn't been  Silly

Ottawa is worth visiting, for the parks and historical/museum side of things. People often say it's not a very 'lively' city in terms of nightlife, etc. I have no reason to disagree, but that's not really my thing anyway. But Ottawa definitely has appeal on its own terms. If nothing else, a quick stop in to tour the parliament buildings (free of course) and walk along the canal is definitely justified!

I imagine that the problem of never having visited one's capital city is a lot more common in a large and (relatively) decentralized country like ours. I am sure that there are lots of people in BC and AB who haven't been to Ottawa, either. And I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of people in Idaho who have never and will never visit Washington, etc.

I live in London (well, the suburbs anyway, although I grew up in Battersea which is a lot more central), so it's fair to say that I have "visited" my nation's capital. I have also visited loads of other capital (both national and state) cities all around the world, but I'm ashamed to say that there are many areas of this small group of islands that I call home that I have never been to.

I've never been to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District, the Scottish Islands and soooo many other areas that I would love to visit. I've never even been to Blackpool!! Big grin And it's not as if any of those places are particularly far away, relatively speaking!

I guess it's true what they say, that you never really explore what's on your own doorstep.

I know the feeling! I was brought up in London and still live there for half of the year, but other than Norwich, where I go to university, I haven't been to anywhere else in the UK. I'm ashamed to say I've only been to 2 cities and that's it! The first time I ever visited a tourist attraction in London was when I had German friends come to stay, I guess you just take things for granted when you see them everyday.

On the plus side I have been to Paris, Berlin (and Bonn since it was before reunification), Brussels, Budapest, Luxembourg, Bern, Lisbon, Athens, Nicosia, Manama, Gabarone, Windhoek, Lusaka, D.C, Mexico city, New Delhi, Cape Town (if you can count it as the legislative capital), and a very brief visit to Harare.
I'll be adding Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta in three weeks time.

I've been to Ottawa but I haven't visited it. First time I was connecting through YOW on my way to LHR. Second time I travelled through part of it to some military base for a camp for the weekend. I don't really count it because I didn't see anything.

I have been to:

Washington DC, USA
London, England
Paris, France
Rome, Italy
Brussels, Belgium

And I get to add Amsterdam next year.  goodvibes

That's correct, and this reminds me of another common misconception, which is the one about Sydney being the capital of Australia (the capital of Australia is actually the city of Canberra). However, South Africa is a bit of a complicated thing, because while Pretoria is the capital, it has three government seeds:

The executive is located in Pretoria, the legislative in Cape Town, and the judicial is located in Bloemfontein.

Basically, in a way you'd have to visit Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein in order to say that you have visited the capital of South Africa.  Wink

I've been there at least a handfull of times already, and I've walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, climbed the Empire State Building, seen Central Park, experienced the chaos of the Subway, been to Chinatown and Little Italy, taken a cab there, and seen a Broadway show.

However, I've never seen the West Coast.

Also, I've never seen Falling Water, and I was BORN AND RAISED in PITTSBURGH!!  banghead

Me. I have never visited Washington DC. I have only visited state capitals and one provincial capital: Victoria, BC. I would love to. I think state houses are fascinating! Parliment, Capital, or whatever they are called, are just fascinating to me. I have not been to many. AK, BC, WA, OR, CA, ID, CO, KS, and NE. I have stood outside UT, but every time (about a dozen times for 3 FREAKIN' YEARS!) it was under going retrofitting for all those severe earthquakes that strike Salt Lake City. As God as my witness, I will set foot inside the Utah State House!

I visited Washington DC in April of 1981, shortly after President Reagan had taken office for his first term. After touring the White House, I was shocked and embarrassed at the general state of neglect and disrepair in evidence at our president's home, and I heartily applauded Nancy Reagan's efforts to correct this later on. The rest of Washington DC was a blur of white marble, fluted columns, and shallow granite steps with two notable exceptions: The Library of Congress, which is a "must-see" for any architecture buff because of it's exuberant "Richardson Romanesque" style and it's extraordinary amount of decorative Masonic symbols, and The Smithsonian Museum(s) which are a month's worth of exploring in their own right.

The only other capitals I've visited are state capitols- Carson City, Nevada and Montgomery, Alabama.

I'm really not going to let this get into an argument. But since the UK is an amalgamation of 4 countries (Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England) hence the correct name "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland"
Each country has it's own laws and stuff; and in the case of Scotland a devolved government meaning we can make our own diplomatic relations among other stuff. It's not the case of independent states of England as with your ideology England would too be an independant state.
The United Kingdom is made up of the 4 countries that unite to call themselves Britain (despite many individuals in Scotland - not sure about Wales and N.ireland although I'm sure there are some- wanting to be independant. Idiots if you ask me)

I would agree. No backlash needed, I may not like Scotland as a place to live very much, but it's still my home and it's a country in its own right. I was there when we got our own parliament in 1997. I saw with my own eyes Concorde flying over Princes Street with the Red Arrows in tail, if that's not enough to make something a country, what is?

Massive faux pas to be fair. I have no idea why I thought Zurich was the capital of Switzerland, and it was only after posting that I realised Pretoria (which I will visit when I have my few days in JNB this year - that's probably what I should have said) was the capital of South Africa. Which, now that my memory doesn't fail me, has three capitals;
Bloemfontein - Judicial
Cape Town - Legislative
Pretoria - executive.

Indeed it's so boring there one day to have a look at the Royal Australian Mint, Australian Institute of Sport and a quick drive around the city was way more than enough. Plus, it was more of a stopover to break up the drive between Melbourne and Sydney. However I'm planning to go back there to get on an E-170   (which actually will be a stopover between Sydney and Melbourne lol

I've been to Canberra once in 2006 (and that was only for about 5-6 hours) prior to that I had visted Most of Australia by road (Around NT/WA/SA, several Darwin - Adelaide Trips, at least 5 Darwin - Brisbane trips using all three of the major routes (Flinders/Bruce, Capricorn/Bruce and Landsborough/Warrego), Brisbane - Adelaide via Tamworth and Sydney, Nowra, Singapore and Phuket all before I ever set foot in Canberra. However I'm going back for days in August

Although I know almost every beach resort in Mexico, I haven't been to ACAPULCO!!! And I live in Mexico City. I'm not very fond on driving and I'd rather go elsewhere than fork out the money on an airline ticket for such a short flight.

I almost went twice back in my school years, but for various reasons the trip was called off at the last minute.

I have dual Lebanese/American citizenship and visit Lebanon's capital, Beirut, regularly (I have family there), and while I live in the United States, I've never been to Washington D.C. I'm planning on visiting it in the Fall though.

I've been to the following national capitals:

Vienna, Austria
Nassau, Bahamas
Manama, Bahrain
Brussels, Belgium
Prague, Czech Republic
Copenhagen, Denmark
Cairo, Egypt
Paris, France
Berlin, Germany
Athens, Greece
Vatican City, Vatican City
Budapest, Hungary
Rome, Italy
Amman, Jordan
Kuwait City, Kuwait
Beirut, Lebanon
Vaduz, Liechtenstein
Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
Monaco, Monaco
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Oslo, Norway
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Bratislava, Slovakia
Bern, Switzerland
Damascus, Syria
Tunis, Tunisia
London, United Kingdom

I've visited many places in Canada, but I haven't been to Ottawa. I was planning on visiting it during my stay in Montreal, but didn't have time. Quebec City was a bigger priority for me.

I've been to 13 capitals, including Belgrade, Serbia, home capital where I live now.

Basically, in a way you'd have to visit Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein in order to say that you have visited the capital of South Africa. Wink

I am proud, to have been to all 3 !

Another interesting capital examples are:
Bolivia -- 2 capitals -- La Paz and Sucre
Cote D'Ivoire -- Yamoussoukro is legal, while most offices are located in Abidjan
Myanmar (Burma) -- Naypiydiaw is offical while most offices are in Yangoon.
Nauru - no capital city, although Yaren municipality is threated as such
etc.

I just passed through Brussels a couple of days ago. That means I've visited the capital of lots of European countries doesn't it?  Wink

Other than that:

Canberra, Australia (countless times - after living there 3 years I love visiting it except on work business)
London, England (there right now actually)
Paris, France
Madrid, Spain
Tokyo, Japan
Putrajaya, Malaysia
Bangkok, Thailand
Singapore
Beijing, China
Seoul, South Korea

Been to many other countries, but not their capitals.

Don't feel stupid, honestly. I know a lot of people who have never left Devon or Cornwall, some even who have never been more than 20 miles from where they were born during their entire lifetime.
