Well as another Lions tour comes to an end I guess it is time for reflection.
On the basis of things, you would probably have to hold your hands up and say that SA
deserved the serious win although of course I was gutted for the Lions who more than contributed to three test matches of the highest level of skill, intensity passion and pride.
I actually feel for Botha. I wonder whether his ban was actually an admission of guilt from the IRB for the Burger incident and they used Botha to try and balance things out a bit.....I would hope that I am wrong of course but honestly, even as a die hard B&L supported I do believe Botha was hard done by...
Speaking of the IRB, whilst not apportioning blame, you have to say the officials were poor in the first two tests.
The TMO incident between Lawrence and Berdos was nothing short of farcicle to say the least and the management of the scrum in the first test really was beyond belief. If you want to take it to the letter, watch those scrums again where Vickery was being pensalised...actually Vickery was breaking the law in that his was twisting in and boaring which is illegal...however you need to see why.....The Beast was actually not engaging straight so to combat this Vickery twisted more which is also illegal and thats why he was pensalised. Thats not to say Vickery didnt have a poor game, where is body position was sometimes whoeful but on balance he was probably shading on the side of being hard done by.
Aside from the tittle tattle overall it was a great series, that both teams deserved to win but, and as much as I hate cliche's, you have to say that when it mattered the home team had the longer fingernails on which to grip on with and that, I think shows, why they are world champions. Basic, hard, strong platformed rugby, a strong captain, strong engine room and danger all over the three quarters especially in defence leave little room for teams to find holes so when you have the chance for points you MUST take them...SA
did, the lions did not and that is where a test is won and lost.
Congratulations to the Boks on a well deserved test series victory. Congratulations to the Lions for the performances, the pride and the spirit in which they played and for coming so very close, deservedly so on almost taking another series in SA
