Mollie Sugden British TV Star Dies Aged 86

Wed Jul 01, 2009 9:35 pm

Sad to see that one of my favourite stars from the old British TV comedy scene has died today at 86.

I will always remember her as Mrs Slocombe in ''Are You being served''

And her Pussy ::

A great loss to British comedy.

Rest in peace, Mrs. Slocombe.

And for those who don't know, sadly Wendy Richard (Miss Brahms) passed away in February due to cancer.
Inspiration, move me brightly!

Yes there was a thread. Another great loss to the British TV industry. Sad they are gone and there will never be programs of the same quality as back then.

I saw Mollie live on stage when I was on a visit to Adelaide (Oz) back in 1980, when I was 15. She was great. I even bumped into her alone after the show in the underpass under the Arts Centre and she smiled generously...

Also her delightful stories of her and her friend Mrs. Axelby's misadventures at the pub ("I got a pork rind stuck in me throat and do you know it took five gin & tonics to finally knock it loose! I think those pork rinds may have been a bit off because I started to feel a little woozy after that") and her mangling of the English language in an attempt to sound posh ("... and I am unanimous in that!").

Rest in peace, Mrs. Sugden.

Don't know who survives, but first Ms B and now Mrs S - sad indeed. Oddly enough, when Wendy died, the ABC here had a number of episodes of the radio series of the "Just a minute" with Wendy as one of the participants. The voice was no different.

Thanks OA260 for the two pics. So apposite.

Indeed a loss of a great woman and actress. Like the many posters above I will miss her "pussy" as well as her changing hair styles.  tombstone

These are the main cast members who are still alive:

Frank Thornton (Cpt. Peacock)
Nicolas Smith (Rumbold)
Trevor Bannister (Lucas)
Mike Berry (Spooner)
Candy Davis (Miss Belfridge)

Other minor or one-time character's actors are still alive, but I just included the most well-known regulars.

Thanks for the inf. Was that really Ms B's actual name and if so, was that where the word Candy got its current meaning?

Meanwhile in Australia, Grace Brothers stores have passed into history too although the name lives on with removals and cleaning - I think!!. I suspect my wife always expected to find the cast of "Are you being served" when I took her into Grace Bros store in Wollongong.

Sadly, my overriding association with Mollie Sugden is the series of Little Britain sketches about the woman whose one obsession in life is telling everyone she was Mollie Sugden's bridesmaid (when in fact she wasn't).

So true!

Are You Being Served was an immense and incomparable show. Nothing on television today even comes close to the sheer comedic genius of Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft and those actors and actresses on the show.

Mollie was my favorite on the show. One of my favorite episodes was when she moved her flat into one of the vacant floors of Grace Brothers (none of the staff would let her stay with them) because she had squatters in her new flat and had nowhere to store her belongings. Later in the episode there was a transit strike and all then staff ended up with her for the night. This episode had one of the best pussy lines ever... "Mr Humphries, leave my pussy alone!"

I agree. I rarely watch TV anymore...except for "Are You Being Served" and "Keeping Up Appearances" re-runs (and Formula 1 of course!). My personal theory is that TV (and society in general) has traded quality for looks. Most new TV shows lack any real acting talents yet serve up doses of well-proportioned, very good looking young people who couldn't act if their lives depended on it.

Seinfeld put it best once during an interview. When asked about the casting for his successful sitcom he said that he always hired the actors with the right qualities, even if that meant not so good looks. His reasoning was that he wanted faces which could be remembered and that he was not casting a soap opera.

I remember that but it was nothing compared to her many years of ''AYBS''. There was a nice tribute to her in the UK newspapers today.

tombstone  Mollie! AYBS reruns are still a great favorite at our house...even after watching for so many years, there are still episodes that I haven't seen.

Because of their age and insurance concerns, I guess, Frank Thornton and Peter Sallis have been relegated to kind of secondary roles on Last of the Summer Wine. They'll usually only be
in an indoors shot. Sad really because the people that have taken over the primary roles, can't hold a candle to them.

Also, Kathy Staff (Norah Batty) died this past year. She was in the cast of Last of the Summer Wine from the beginning, I believe.

Ok.....back to Mollie and AYBS. One of my favorite episodes was when they had to spend the night at the store, in the basement and all had to sleep on a water bed that was there.

Pussy galore: a tribute to Mrs Slocombe

With her immortal 'pussy', Mrs Slocombe turned the airwaves as blue as her rinse. Mollie Sugden's creation will be remembered as one of the strongest, sauciest female characters of the 70s
